Greetings and blessings, beloved family!
“Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom.” Alleluia! Today, the Church shakes off spiritual gloom as we celebrate the joyful Memorial of Saint Philip Neri, the “Apostle of Rome” whose heart was physically expanded by a ball of mystical Holy Spirit fire. Standing with him is Pope Saint Eleutherius, the early Church martyr who successfully sent the first holy missionaries to evangelize Britain. In today’s Gospel, Peter counts the cost of discipleship, saying, “We have given up everything and followed you.” Jesus responds with an incredible promise: anyone who lets go of earthly security for His sake will receive a hundred times more in this present age, packaged honestly with persecutions and eternal life in the age to come. This hundredfold isn’t isolated wealth, but the sprawling family of the Church where every open door belongs to you. To help us claim this, the First Reading issues a bold battle cry: “Gird up the loins of your mind, live soberly… Be holy because I am holy.” As our Responsorial Psalm sings, “The Lord has made known his salvation,” we are reminded that true holiness is filled with an unshakeable, contagious joy.
Peter calculated exactly what he sacrificed for God, wondering if it was worth it. Are you treating your faith like a calculated transaction, or are you ready to trust that God will completely out-give your generosity?
BIBLE READINGS FOR TODAY’S HOLY MASS:
Eighth Week in Ordinary Time | USCCB | https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading
Today’s Bible Readings: Memorial of Saint Philip Neri, Priest | May 26, 2026
Reading I: 1 Peter 1:10–16
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 98:1, 2–3ab, 3cd–4
Gospel: Mark 10:28–31
Gospel Reading ~ Mark 10:28–31
“Amen, I say to you… there is no one who has given up … for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age…”
Peter began to say to Jesus, “We have given up everything and followed you.” Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. But many that are first will be last, and the last will be first.”
SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS
In the Gospel, we witness a profound moment of raw human vulnerability as Peter calculates the sheer weight of absolute discipleship. This reflection centers on The Paradox of Sacrificial Abundance and the Economy of the Kingdom. Fresh from watching the rich young man walk away downcast because of his massive wealth, Peter speaks for the twelve, stating: “We have given up everything and followed you.” Human nature naturally seeks reassurance when it strips itself of earthly security. Rather than rebuking Peter’s underlying anxiety, Jesus responds with an astonishing, multi-dimensional promise. He guarantees that any individual who relinquishes domestic comforts, familial safety nets, or material property for His sake and the Gospel will receive a hundredfold return right now, in this present age. However, Christ shatters any materialistic prosperity illusions by deliberately slipping two heavy realities into the balance sheet: persecutions in the present, and eternal life in the age to come. The hundredfold is not found in isolated luxury, but in the sprawling, spiritual family of the Church, where every believer’s house and heart become your own. Christ completely upends human standards of success by declaring that the first will be last, and the last will be first.
The First Reading provides the deep, theological framework for this high calling, presenting The Grace of the Present Age and the Mandate for Conduct. Saint Peter reminds his listeners that the salvation they are currently experiencing is a mystery so magnificent that the ancient prophets searched and investigated it with intense scrutiny. Guided by the Spirit of Christ within them, those prophets foretold the agonizing sufferings destined for the Messiah and the blinding glories that would inevitably follow. It was revealed to them that their hidden, ancient labor was ultimately serving us—unveiling truths so breathtaking that even the holy angels long to catch a glimpse of them. Because we are the direct beneficiaries of this costly grace, Peter issues an aggressive spiritual battle cry: “Gird up the loins of your mind, live soberly, and set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you.” We are commanded to behave like obedient children, completely severing ties with the ignorant desires of our past, and pursuing a radical, uncompromising standard: “Be holy because I am holy.”
The Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 98) serves as a triumphant liturgical victory shout that perfectly matches this salvation narrative: “The Lord has made known his salvation.” It invites the global community to sing a brand-new song to the Lord because He has shattered the power of darkness through His own wondrous, sovereign deeds. His holy arm and victorious right hand have won the ultimate triumph. This saving justice is not a hidden secret; it has been revealed openly in the clear sight of the nations, proving God’s unswerving kindness and enduring faithfulness to the house of Israel. As the saving message breaks past ancient boundaries, all the ends of the earth catch sight of the victory of our God, causing entire lands to break into festive, joyful song.
As we journey forward through Ordinary Time, let us audit our hearts and evaluate what we are holding back from the Lord. Reflect today: When you look at the sacrifices you have made for your faith, do you find yourself slipping into a transactional mindset with God, silently asking what you will get in return? Are you actively willing to accept the persecutions that come packaged with the hundredfold blessings of the Gospel? How are you actively “girding up the loins of your mind” today to preserve a lifestyle of radical holiness in a compromising world?
Let us pray: Lord Jesus Christ, we praise You for Your boundless generosity that can never be out-given by human sacrifice. Deliver us from the exhausting habit of counting the cost or treating our discipleship like a transaction. Grant us the childlike simplicity to give up whatever holds us back from You, trusting completely in Your hundredfold providence. Pour out Your Holy Spirit to help us gird up the loins of our minds, keeping us sober-minded and vigilant against the desires of our former ignorance. Give us the fortitude to smile in the face of persecution, the grace to build up Your spiritual family, and an unswerving determination to be holy as You are holy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT PHILIP NERI, PRIEST: Saint Philip Neri (1515–1595), affectionately celebrated as the “Apostle of Rome,” was a dynamically joyful priest who single-handedly catalyzed a counter-reformation of the heart through humor, hospitality, and mystical fire. Born to Florentine nobility, Philip experienced a profound interior conversion at age eighteen, prompting him to discard a lucrative business inheritance to live in radical dependency on Divine Providence in Rome. Horrified by the widespread luxury and spiritual decay of the Roman clergy, he sold his academic library to feed the poor, spent his nights praying in the catacombs, and traversed the city streets with an infectious, good-natured cheer that drew souls out of indifference. Following an extraordinary mystical experience where the Holy Spirit physically enlarged his heart with a ball of divine fire, he founded the Congregation of the Oratory, or Oratorians. Refusing a cardinal’s hat to remain accessible to the youth, the poor, and the broken, Philip revolutionized ministry through the confessional, proving that holiness is best cultivated not in gloomy isolation, but through Christian joy.
PRAYER: Almighty God, You never cease raising Your faithful servants to the glory of holiness. Grant that we may be continuously inflamed by the fire of the Holy Spirit that so wonderfully burned in the heart of Saint Philip Neri, that we might conquer our spiritual dryness with his signature Christian joy and apostolic zeal. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽
SAINT ELEUTHERIUS, POPE AND MARTYR: Pope Saint Eleutherius (d. 189) was a holy Greek deacon from Nicopolis who ascended to the Chair of Saint Peter to govern the early Church for over fifteen years. Serving as bishop of Rome during the turbulent transition into the reign of Emperor Commodus, Eleutherius steered the bark of Peter through a critical season of immense missionary expansion and relative geopolitical calm. His pontificate was distinguished by a profound global vision for the Gospel; when King Lucius of the Britons sent a formal plea begging to be received into the Christian fold, Eleutherius promptly dispatched the learned missionaries Fugatius and Damian to evangelize the island, successfully planting the seeds of faith in Britain. He also warmly received Saint Irenaeus, a disciple of Polycarp, reinforcing apostolic continuity and theological unity against rising heresies. Eventually crowned with the glory of martyrdom, he was buried in the Vatican near the body of Saint Peter, leaving behind a legacy of uncompromised pastoral fortitude.
PRAYER: Lord God, since the heavy burden of our misdeeds is often grievous to us, grant, we pray, that the glorious intercession of blessed Eleutherius, Your martyr and bishop, may protect our steps, defend the Church against error, and keep us steadfast in the true Faith. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

HONORING THE SAINTS OF THE DAY:
As we look to the joyful, loving heart of Saint Philip Neri and the faithful leadership of Saint Eleutherius today, we also unite our hearts with the broader cloud of witnesses sharing this May 26th feast. Today, we prayerfully honor and remember SAINT ALPHAEUS, SAINT BECAN, SAINT BERENCARDUS, SAINT DYFAN, BLESSED EVA OF LIEGE, SAINT FELICISSIMUS, SAINT FUGATIUS AND DAMIAN, SAINT GUINIZO, SAINT JOHN HOAN, SAINT MARIANA, SAINT MARIANA DE PAREDES, SAINT MATTHEW PHUONG, SAINT ODUVALD, BLESSED PETER SANZ, SAINT QUADRATUS, SAINT QUADRATUS OF ATHENS, AND SAINT ZACHARY. Whether their lives were spent serving as early missionary bishops, persevering as courageous martyrs in distant lands, or seeking God in the absolute quiet of a monastic cell, their journeys all reflect the same radiant grace. Remembering them reminds us of the vastness of our faith family, encouraging us to bring Christ’s light into our own daily circles today.
PRAYER INTENTION: FOR RADICAL DETACHMENT, INFECTIOUS CHRISTIAN JOY, AND THE FIRE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
On this beautiful Memorial of Saint Philip Neri, we place our lives, our families, and our daily struggles into Your hands, Lord Jesus. Deliver us from the exhausting habits of a transactional faith, and give us a heart capable of absolute surrender to Your divine providence. We pray for an outpouring of supernatural joy and spiritual renewal; through the intercession of Saint Philip Neri (Patron Saint of Rome and the U.S. Army Special Forces), the Apostle of Rome, smash the chains of spiritual dryness, gloom, and anxiety that so easily weigh us down. Infuse our homes and our ministries with his signature, good-natured cheer. Grant a fresh, burning zeal to the clergy and the global Church. We pray for the sick, especially those battling terminal or chronic illnesses, asking that the same fire of the Holy Spirit that physically expanded Saint Philip’s heart may bring them comfort, healing, and profound peace. We pray for missionary zeal and the protection of our defenders; through the prayers of Pope Saint Eleutherius (Patron Saint against the burden of misdeeds and for the defense of the true Faith), keep the Church steadfast in the true Faith and free from error. We pray for our local communities, for an end to division, and for the poor and marginalized. Look with special favor upon all men and women serving in the military, particularly the U.S. Army Special Forces under Saint Philip’s patronage; wrap them in Your divine protection, keep them safe in challenging times, and give them courage in the face of adversity. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

THE POPE’S MONTHLY INTENTIONS FOR 2026: FOR THE MONTH OF MAY: That Everyone Might Have Food. Pope Leo invites us to pray that no one might lack the food they need and that we might learn to live more responsibly, recognizing that the earth’s resources are a gift for everyone.

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF MAY | MONTH OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY: May is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God and our spiritual Mother. This month invites the faithful to draw closer to Mary through prayer, reflection, and imitation of her virtues especially her humility, obedience, purity, and unwavering faith. As the first and most perfect disciple of Christ, Mary leads us gently but firmly to her Son. Throughout Church history, May has been a time to honor Mary with special devotions such as the Rosary, May Crownings, Marian processions, and prayers like the Litany of Loreto. The Church teaches that Mary, assumed body and soul into Heaven, intercedes for us as Queen of Heaven and Mother of the Church. During this month, we are called to renew our relationship with her and seek her maternal care in our joys, sorrows, and needs. Mary said “yes” to God’s plan with total trust: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). Her faithful surrender encourages us to say “yes” to God’s will in our own lives. As we meditate on the mysteries of the Rosary and contemplate her role in salvation history, we grow in our love for her and our desire to follow Christ more closely.
In this beautiful month of blooming flowers, may our hearts also blossom with deeper devotion to the Mother of our Savior. Let us bring her our prayers, our homes, and our lives, asking her to accompany us with her love and protection.
“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”
Hail Mary, full of grace! Teach us to love Jesus as you loved Him. Cover us with your mantle of mercy, and help us to walk always in the light of your Son. Amen 🙏🏽

PRAYER FOR THE DEAD
We pray for the repose of the gentle souls of our loved ones and souls of all the faithful departed. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their gentle souls through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace with our Lord Jesus Christ… Amen 🙏🏽
Thanking God for His love and the gift of this glorious day, we offer Him a prayer of gratitude for the graces of the past weeks and entrust the remaining days of this month of May to His loving providence. We pray for God’s grace and mercy as we transition from the magnificent fulfillment of the Easter season into Ordinary Time. May the Resurrection and the Ascension of Your Son, alongside the fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit, help us to seek You in every moment of our lives. May the peace, hope, and steady guidance that flow from the empty tomb and the Upper Room shape our steps, inform our decisions, and strengthen our resolve to live each day in the light of the Risen Christ and the fire of the Advocate. As we journey onward through the rest of this month, may God bless our families and loved ones, and may His light continue to shine brightly in every home. Let us draw closer to God and be renewed through the joy of the Gospel, the gifts of the Spirit, and generosity to the poor. May God keep us all safe and well during these challenging times. Wishing us all a spiritually enriching, most blessed, and grace-filled journey ahead. Amen. 🙏🏽
