Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, on the Memorial of Saint Jerome, Priest and Doctor of the Church, the Church honors one of Christendom’s greatest biblical scholars, who dedicated his brilliant mind, profound pen, and entire life to translating and living the sacred word of God. As we reflect on his monumental legacy, including his famous reminder that “ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ” today’s Gospel calls us to a matching standard of radical, uncompromising discipleship. Jesus reminds us along the road that following Him requires letting go of half-hearted conditions and worldly distractions, keeping our hands steady on the plow. Anchored in the wisdom of holy Scripture and the steadfast zeal of Saint Jerome, let us open our hearts to follow Christ with an undivided commitment today.

BIBLE READINGS FOR TODAY’S HOLY MASS:

Twenty-sixth Week in Ordinary Time | USCCB | https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading

Today’s Bible Readings: Memorial of Saint Jerome, Priest and Doctor of the Church | Wednesday, September 30, 2026
Reading 1:
Job 9:1-12, 14-16
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 88:10bc-11, 12-13, 14-15
Gospel: Luke 9:57-62

Gospel Reading ~ Luke 9:57-62

“No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.”

“As Jesus and his disciples were proceeding on their journey, someone said to him, ‘I will follow you wherever you go.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.’ And to another he said, ‘Follow me.’ But he replied, ‘Lord, let me go first and bury my father.’ But he answered him, ‘Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God.’ And another said, ‘I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home.’ Jesus answered him, ‘No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the Kingdom of God.'”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

Today’s readings call us to total, uncompromising commitment to the Lord, challenging us to evaluate how fully we place God above earthly attachments and human rationalization. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks bluntly to prospective followers about the radical nature of discipleship. Following Christ requires letting go of half-hearted conditions, delayed obedience, and sentimental distractions. Looking back once we have set our hands to the plow only skews our path; instead, Christ invites us to place the proclamation of the Kingdom above all else, trusting completely in His providence even when the road demands absolute self-giving.

This profound sense of human limitation before God’s supreme majesty is echoed in the First Reading from the Book of Job. Reflecting on the infinite power and wisdom of the Creator, Job acknowledges that human beings cannot contend with God or question His marvelous, unsearchable works: “God is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has withstood him and remained unscathed?” Yet even in the depths of suffering and bewilderment, the Responsorial Psalm shows us the persistence of faith, lifting a cry out of the darkness: “Daily I call upon you, O LORD; to you I stretch out my hands… Let my prayer come before you, Lord.”

Today, on the Memorial of Saint Jerome, who dedicated his brilliant mind and whole life to translating and living the sacred word of God—let us examine our hearts. Are there lingering comforts, hesitations, or worldly ties keeping us from following Jesus with an undivided heart? How can you refocus your priorities today to ensure that following Christ and proclaiming His Kingdom takes precedence over every earthly distraction?

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your holy word and the example of steadfast discipleship left by Your saints. Forgive us for the times our commitment is half-hearted, or when we allow worldly attachments and hesitation to pull our hands away from Your plow. Give us the grace to follow Jesus with radical trust, unwavering focus, and total surrender. Strengthen our resolve to seek Your Kingdom first in all things. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT JEROME, PRIEST AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH: Born in Stridon (modern-day Croatia) around 347, Saint Jerome was a man of immense intellect, fiery passion, and deep love for Scripture. Educated in Rome, he mastered Latin and Greek, and though he once pursued worldly ambitions, his heart was captured by Christ. After baptism, Jerome devoted his life to asceticism, study, and prayer. He spent years in the Syrian desert, battling temptations and studying Hebrew, which later enabled him to translate the Old Testament from its original language. Jerome became secretary to Pope Damasus I, who commissioned him to revise and standardize the Latin Scriptures. This monumental work, known as the Vulgate, became the official Bible of the Western Church for over a millennium and remains one of the most influential translations in Christian history. Jerome eventually settled in Bethlehem, where he lived a life of prayer, scholarship, and spiritual direction, often with the help of noble Roman women like Saint Paula and Saint Eustochium.

Though his sharp tongue made him both admired and feared, Jerome’s writings, treatises, and letters shaped Christian theology for centuries. His famous statement still resounds: “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” He died on September 30, 420, and was later proclaimed a Doctor of the Church. Today, he is honored as the patron saint of archaeologists, archivists, Bible scholars, librarians, schoolchildren, students, and translators.

PRAYER: God, You gave Saint Jerome a deep love for Your Word and a burning zeal to make it known. May Your people hunger for Scripture and find in it the fountain of life. Through his intercession, grant us wisdom to live Your truth and courage to proclaim it. Amen. 🙏🏽

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER | MONTH OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS: September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, inviting us to unite our hearts with Mary in her profound sharing of Christ’s Passion. As Simeon foretold, “a sword will pierce your own soul too” (Luke 2:35), and throughout her life Mary endured deep sorrows that culminated at Calvary. In her silent strength and unwavering faith, she became the compassionate Mother of all Christians, offering her suffering with Christ for the salvation of the world.

This month, the Church calls us to meditate on the Seven Sorrows of Mary: Simeon’s prophecy, the Flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple, meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, standing at the foot of the Cross, receiving His lifeless Body, and placing Him in the tomb. By reflecting on these sorrows, we learn patience in trials, compassion for the suffering, and a deeper love for Jesus who suffered for us.

Prayers such as the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows, the Rosary of Our Lady of Sorrows, and the Litany of Our Lady of Sorrows help us to walk with Mary in her suffering and to discover hope and consolation in her maternal heart.

“Most Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, teach us to stand with you at the Cross, sharing in Christ’s love and redemptive sacrifice.”

Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us. Amen 🙏🏾
