Greetings and blessings, beloved family!
Today, on the memorial of Saint Callistus I, Pope and Martyr, the Church honors a compassionate shepherd whose life stands as a testament to the transformative power of divine mercy. Rising from slave labor to the Chair of Saint Peter, Pope Callistus courageously defended the truth that no sin is beyond the reach of God’s forgiveness for a truly repentant heart. As caretaker of the sacred catacombs and a defender of sacramental reconciliation, he bore witness to the life-giving Spirit. His example shines alongside today’s scripture readings, where Saint Paul contrasts the deadening “works of the flesh” with the vibrant “fruit of the Spirit,” and Jesus warns against empty, judgmental legalism. Today, let us lay aside spiritual pride and walk by the Spirit in humility and love.
🙏🏽 A PRAYER FOR OUR HOLY FATHER, POPE LEO XIV 🙏🏽🤍
For God’s Divine Protection, Healing, and Speedy Recovery

Saint Joseph, Protector of the Universal Church, watch over him. Saints Peter and Paul, pray for him.
Merciful Father, we thank You in faith for hearing our prayers. We pray for a successful procedure, complete healing, freedom from complications, and a peaceful and speedy recovery.
May Your healing grace restore his strength, renew his spirit, and enable him to continue shepherding Your Church with wisdom, courage, humility, and love.
We ask all these blessings through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽🤍

BIBLE READINGS FOR TODAY’S HOLY MASS:
Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time | USCCB | https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading
Today’s Bible Readings: Wednesday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time | Wednesday, October 14, 2026
Reading 1: Galatians 5:18-25
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 1:1-2, 3, 4, 6
Gospel: Luke 11:42-46
Gospel Reading ~ Luke 11:42-46
“Woe to you Pharisees! You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb, but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God.”
“The Lord said: ‘Woe to you Pharisees! You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb, but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God. These you should have done, without overlooking the others. Woe to you Pharisees! You love the seat of honor in synagogues and greetings in marketplaces. Woe to you! You are like unseen graves over which people unknowingly walk.’ Then one of the scholars of the law said to him in reply, ‘Teacher, by saying this you are insulting us too.’ And he said, ‘Woe also to you scholars of the law! You impose on people burdens hard to carry, but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them.'”
SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS
Today’s readings cut straight to the heart of authentic Christian discipleship, exposing the emptiness of religious pride while inviting us to bear the vibrant, lasting fruit of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel, Jesus issues a series of sharp reprimands against the Pharisees and scholars of the law. While they meticulous observed minor ritual tithes, they neglected the very core of God’s covenant: justice and true love for God. Rather than using their knowledge to relieve the spiritual and moral weight of others, they imposed crushing burdens while seeking public honor. Jesus reminds us that external religious practice without genuine love and humility makes us spiritually hollow.
In stark contrast, Saint Paul in the First Reading lays out the transformative power of a life led by the Spirit. He enumerates the self-destructive “works of the flesh”—such as hatred, jealousy, selfish ambition, and dissension—that separate us from God’s Kingdom, and sets them against the divine harvest: “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” When we crucify our selfish desires and walk according to the Spirit, we are freed from legalistic bondage and planted firmly in divine grace. As the Responsorial Psalm beautifully promises: “He is like a tree planted near running water, that yields its fruit in due season… Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life.”
Today, let us examine our spiritual walk. Are we getting caught up in superficial appearances and self-righteousness, or are we actively cultivating the gentle, loving fruits of the Holy Spirit in our interactions with others?
How can you intentionally yield a fruit of the Spirit—such as patience, kindness, or self-control—in a challenging situation today?
Heavenly Father, we thank You for giving us the light of life and for sending Your Holy Spirit to guide our steps. Forgive us for the times we have focused on human praise or judged others while neglecting real love, justice, and mercy. Crucify in us all selfish ambitions, envy, and pride, and cultivate within our souls the fruits of love, joy, peace, and gentleness. Help us to walk by the Spirit each day and be a source of encouragement rather than a burden to those around us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽
SAINTS OF THE DAY | OCTOBER 14TH:
Direct link to the detailed history of Saint Callistus I, Pope and Martyr | https://dailyreflectionswithphilomena.com/saints-of-the-day-feast-day-october-14th/
SAINT CALLISTUS I, POPE AND MARTYR: Pope St. Callistus I (d. 222 A.D.) was a Roman Christian who rose from a life of slavery and hard labor in Sardinian mines to become the sixteenth Pope. As a deacon, he managed the Church’s property and organized the famous catacomb cemetery along the Appian Way that still bears his name. Elected Pope in 217, Callistus firmly emphasized God’s boundless mercy, teaching that even the gravest sins could be absolved through true contrition and sacramental penance. Though fiercely opposed by rigorists like Tertullian and Hippolytus, he stood as a compassionate shepherd, regulated sacramental discipline, defended Trinitarian orthodoxy, and built the Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. He was martyred in 222 when he was thrown down a well during a Roman uprising, becoming the first Pope after St. Peter to be venerated as a martyr. He is the patron saint of cemetery workers.
PRAYER: Lord, graciously hear the prayers of Your people. Let us be aided by the merits of Pope St. Callistus, at whose passion we rejoice. Amen. 🙏🏽

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your endless mercy and for the holy witness of Pope Saint Callistus I. Through his intercession, we lift up all cemetery workers, gravediggers, and caretakers of holy grounds, asking You to protect them and bless their solemn service to the departed. We pray for all who are burdened by past sins, that they may find healing and absolution in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Cleanse our hearts of all hypocrisy, self-righteousness, and legalism, and root out the works of the flesh within us. Fill us with the fruit of Your Holy Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and gentleness—that we may walk in Your light each day. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF OCTOBER | MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY: October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary, a powerful prayer that draws us into the heart of the Gospel through the eyes of Mary. The Rosary is more than repetition, it is a meditation on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, united with the loving presence of His Blessed Mother. As Pope St. John Paul II reminded us, the Rosary is “a compendium of the Gospel,” helping us to contemplate Christ’s face with Mary.
The twenty mysteries of the Rosary, Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous, invite us to journey with Christ from His Incarnation to His Passion and His triumph over death. Each mystery opens us to God’s saving love, strengthens our faith, and leads us to imitate the virtues of Jesus and Mary in our daily lives. This month, the Church invites us to renew our devotion to the Rosary by praying it daily, whether alone, in families, or in community. Through it, we find peace in times of trial, strength against temptation, and deeper trust in God’s providence. Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, intercedes for us and leads us always to her Son.
“O Mary, our Blessed Mother and Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, teach us to pray with a pure heart and a steadfast spirit. As we meditate on the mysteries of Christ, help us to grow in faith, hope, and love. Intercede for us before your Son, that our families, our Church, and our world may be filled with peace and the light of the Gospel. Amen.” 🙏🏽
