Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, on this Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the universal Church joyfully celebrates the landmark 100th World Mission Sunday, uniting us across every continent under the inspiring theme: “ONE IN CHRIST, UNITED IN MISSION.” For a century, this special day has called the faithful to prayer, solidarity, and sacrificial support for the Church’s global missionary work, reminding us that we are all sent forth to bear witness to the Gospel. Today’s readings dynamically reflect this missionary spirit, beginning with the Gospel where Jesus commands us to render unto God what belongs to God—our total devotion, lives, and witness. This divine call to mission is powerfully personified in today’s Feast of Saint Luke, Evangelist. The “beloved physician” and companion of Saint Paul faithfully used his pen, medical skill, and artistic gifts to record the Gospel of divine mercy and spread Christ’s salvation to the ends of the earth.

🙏🏽 A PRAYER FOR OUR HOLY FATHER, POPE LEO XIV 🙏🏽🤍

According to the Vatican News Pope Leo XIV has officially been discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital and has returned safely to the Vatican, recovering well ahead of initial schedules following his lung surgery. We give thanks for his successful discharge and continue to hold Pope Leo XIV in our prayers for his complete healing, restored strength, and continued good health. Amen 🙏🏾.

Today’s Bible Readings: Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time | Sunday, October 18, 2026
Reading 1:
Isaiah 45:1, 4-6
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 96:1, 3, 4-5, 7-8, 9-10
Reading 2: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b
Gospel: Matthew 22:15-21

Gospel Reading ~ Matthew 22:15-21

“Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”

“The Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech. They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, ‘Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion, for you do not regard a person’s status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?’ Knowing their malice, Jesus said, ‘Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax.’ Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them, ‘Whose image is this and whose inscription?’ They replied, ‘Caesar’s.’ At that he said to them, ‘Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.'”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

Today’s readings invite us to contemplate the supreme sovereignty of God over all human history, political powers, and the individual human heart. In the Gospel, the Pharisees and Herodians join forces in an attempt to entrap Jesus with a politically dangerous trap regarding the Roman census tax. Exhibiting divine wisdom, Jesus cuts through their malice by asking for the tax coin. Pointing to Caesar’s image stamped upon the metal, He delivers a profound principle that transcends earthly politics: “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” While civic duties have their rightful place, our ultimate, undivided allegiance belongs to God, because it is His divine image, not Caesar’s, that is stamped upon our very souls.

This reality of God’s absolute authority over earthly rulers is powerfully illustrated in the First Reading. The Lord speaks of Cyrus, the pagan King of Persia, whom He anointed and guided to fulfill His sovereign will for the sake of His chosen people, declaring: “I am the LORD and there is no other, there is no God besides me.” Grounded in this truth, the Responsorial Psalm summons all nations to recognize the true King of the universe: “Give to the LORD, you families of nations, give to the LORD glory and praise… Say among the nations: The LORD is king.” Furthermore, Saint Paul in the Second Reading praises the Thessalonians whose lives reflect this total surrender to God, commending their “work of faith and labor of love and endurance in hope” through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Today, let us examine where our deepest loyalties lie. Are we giving to earthly concerns or human opinions what rightfully belongs to God alone? How can you render to God what is His today by giving Him the total devotion, worship, and love of your heart?

Heavenly Father, we thank You for creating us in Your divine image and declaring that we belong completely to You. Forgive us for the times we have allowed worldly anxieties, political allegiances, or human approval to rival Your rightful place in our lives. Grant us the wisdom to honor our civic responsibilities with integrity while surrendering our hearts, minds, and souls entirely to Your service. Strengthen our faith, inspire our labor of love, and fill us with conviction through the power of Your Holy Spirit. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINTS OF THE DAY | OCTOBER 18TH:

Direct link to the detailed history of Saint Luke the Evangelist | https://dailyreflectionswithphilomena.com/saint-of-the-day-feast-day-october-18th/

SAINT LUKE, EVANGELIST (1st Century): Saint Luke, whose name means “bringer of light,” was a Greek physician from Antioch and one of the early converts to Christianity. A close companion of Saint Paul, Luke traveled with him on missionary journeys, sharing in his labors and sufferings, even remaining with him through imprisonment in Rome. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Luke wrote both the Gospel according to Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, which together make up nearly one-fourth of the New Testament. Luke’s Gospel stands out for its warmth, compassion, and emphasis on the universality of salvation. He portrays Jesus as the merciful Savior who brings healing to the sinner, hope to the poor, and light to those in darkness. His writings reveal deep reverence for the Blessed Virgin Mary, preserving for us the intimate stories of the Annunciation, Visitation, and Nativity. Many scholars believe he drew from Mary’s own testimony, making him the “Evangelist of the Mother of God.”

Tradition also holds that Saint Luke was a skilled artist, who painted the first icons of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus—images that continue to inspire Christian devotion today. As a physician, writer, historian, and artist, Saint Luke used every talent to glorify God and spread the message of divine mercy. He is honored as the patron of physicians, artists, painters, sculptors, butchers, and bachelors. The Church venerates him as a martyr, who gave his life in witness to the Gospel.

PRAYER: God, You chose St. Luke to reveal in preaching and writing Your love for the poor. Grant that those who already glory in Your Name may persevere in one heart and one mind, and that all people may hear Your Good News of salvation. Amen🙏🏾

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF OCTOBER | MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY: October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary, a powerful prayer that draws us into the heart of the Gospel through the eyes of Mary. The Rosary is more than repetition, it is a meditation on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, united with the loving presence of His Blessed Mother. As Pope St. John Paul II reminded us, the Rosary is “a compendium of the Gospel,” helping us to contemplate Christ’s face with Mary.

The twenty mysteries of the Rosary, Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous, invite us to journey with Christ from His Incarnation to His Passion and His triumph over death. Each mystery opens us to God’s saving love, strengthens our faith, and leads us to imitate the virtues of Jesus and Mary in our daily lives. This month, the Church invites us to renew our devotion to the Rosary by praying it daily, whether alone, in families, or in community. Through it, we find peace in times of trial, strength against temptation, and deeper trust in God’s providence. Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, intercedes for us and leads us always to her Son.

“O Mary, our Blessed Mother and Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, teach us to pray with a pure heart and a steadfast spirit. As we meditate on the mysteries of Christ, help us to grow in faith, hope, and love. Intercede for us before your Son, that our families, our Church, and our world may be filled with peace and the light of the Gospel. Amen.” 🙏🏽
