Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, as we joyfully welcome the new month of September, our Gospel takes us to Capernaum, where Jesus teaches with divine authority and commands unclean spirits with a single word. Today, with hearts full of gratitude to God for ushering us safely into this new season, we celebrate Saint Giles the Abbot, a humble 7th-century hermit and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers who fled worldly prestige, embraced a life of prayer in solitude, and became a refuge for the poor, disabled, and suffering. We also honor Saint Anna the Prophetess, the holy widow who spent her life in the Temple in continuous prayer and fasting, recognizing the infant Messiah with joy, and The Twelve Holy Brothers, Martyrs, African-born witnesses who gave their lives in steadfast fidelity to Christ under Diocletian. As we begin this new month, let us commit our lives, plans, and families into God’s hands, placing our absolute trust in the authoritative word of Jesus and walking with the Spirit of God.

“What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”

“Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the sabbath, and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority. In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice, ‘What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are–the Holy One of God!’ Jesus rebuked him and said, ‘Be quiet! Come out of him!’ Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm. They were all amazed and said to one another, ‘What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.’ And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In today’s Gospel, after being rejected in His hometown of Nazareth, Jesus goes down to Capernaum and teaches in the synagogue on the Sabbath. The people are immediately struck by His teaching because He speaks not like the scribes, but with absolute divine authority. When a man possessed by an unclean demon confronts Him, recognizing Him as “the Holy One of God,” Jesus silences the spirit and commands it to come out. With a single authoritative word, the demon leaves the man unharmed, leaving the crowd in awe of the power and authority present in Christ’s word. This miracle demonstrates that Jesus is not merely a gifted teacher, but the Lord of heaven and earth who possesses total victory over darkness and liberation for all who are bound.

In the First Reading, Saint Paul explains to the Corinthians that spiritual truths cannot be understood through human wisdom or worldly intellect alone, but only through the Holy Spirit. “The Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.” Paul contrasts the natural man who views spiritual realities as foolishness because he relies solely on human reasoning, with the spiritual person, who is guided by the Holy Spirit and possesses “the mind of Christ.” The Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 145) reinforces this truth, praising God for His justice, grace, and compassion: “The Lord is just in all his ways.” It calls upon us to proclaim the glory of God’s everlasting kingdom, trusting that the Lord lifts up all who are falling and raises up those who are bowed down.

As we step into this new month of September, these readings remind us to place our complete trust in the authoritative word of Jesus and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We are called to surrender our lives to Christ so that His Spirit can renew our minds, drive out every form of spiritual oppression or fear, and give us the discernment to navigate the challenges ahead.

Heavenly Father, we welcome this new month with hearts full of gratitude, praise, and hope. We thank You for Your continuous faithfulness, protection, and mercy over our lives. Lord Jesus, we recognize You as the Holy One of God, whose word possesses all power and authority over darkness, sin, and sickness. Speak Your powerful word of healing and deliverance into our lives, our families, and our work today. Cast out every fear, doubt, and spirit of anxiety or confusion that seeks to hold us back. Grant us the fullness of Your Holy Spirit, so that we may possess the mind of Christ, discern spiritual realities, and live in obedience to Your holy will throughout this new month. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT GILES, ABBOT (c. 640–712): St. Giles was born into a wealthy Greek family in Athens. Dreading worldly praise and seeking solitude, he gave away his wealth to the poor and fled to Gaul (present-day France) to live as a cave-dwelling hermit. God sent a hind deer to nourish him with milk. When a royal hunter shot an arrow at the deer, it struck Giles instead, leaving him crippled for life. The King built a monastery at the site, and Giles reluctantly accepted disciples, serving as the first Abbot under the Rule of St. Benedict. Known for numerous miracles, he became one of the most venerated medieval saints and is counted among the Fourteen Holy Helpers. Patron Saint of: Crippled, disabled, cancer patients, epileptics, mental illness, beggars, hermits, and nursing mothers.

PRAYER: Lord God, You gave Saint Giles a heart of humility and compassion for the poor, the sick, and the forgotten. Through his intercession, grant us the courage to embrace our weaknesses and to serve others with love. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT ANNA THE PROPHETESS: Anna, the daughter of Phanuel of the tribe of Asher, appears in Luke 2:36–38 at the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple. Widowed at a young age, she devoted her long life to prayer, fasting, and worship in the Temple. When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to present Him to the Lord, Anna immediately recognized the Messiah. She gave thanks to God and proclaimed the Child to all who awaited the redemption of Jerusalem. Anna reminds us of the power of faithful perseverance in prayer and the joy of recognizing Christ’s presence.

PRAYER: Lord, like Saint Anna, make us faithful in prayer and open to the promptings of Your Spirit, that we may recognize and proclaim Christ in our daily lives. Amen. 🙏🏾

THE TWELVE HOLY BROTHERS, MARTYRS (3rd c.): The Twelve Holy Brothers were African Christians who suffered martyrdom during the persecutions of Emperors Diocletian and Maximian. Refusing to renounce their faith or sacrifice to pagan gods, they were executed at different places in Italy: some in Potenza, others in Venosa, and others in Sentiana. Their relics were later enshrined together in Benevento in 760. Their names are: Arontius, Donatus, Felix (of Sentiana), Felix (of Venosa), Fortunatus, Honoratus, Januarius, Repositus, Sabinian, Sator, Septiminus, and Vitalis. They stand as a witness to the unity of the Church in martyrdom, reminding us that even when scattered, the faithful are bound together in Christ.

PRAYER: Almighty God, through the witness of the Twelve Holy Brothers, give us courage to remain steadfast in faith amid trials, and strengthen all who face persecution today. Amen. 🙏🏾

Through the intercession of Saint Giles the Abbot, we pray for all who are physically disabled, crippled, suffering from cancer, epilepsy, mental illness, or chronic illness; touch them with Your divine healing and comfort. Through the prayers of Saint Anna the Prophetess, grant us the grace of patient, persistent prayer, and open our eyes to recognize Your divine presence in our daily lives. Through the witness of The Twelve Holy Brothers, strengthen our faith so that we may remain steadfast and unshakeable in times of trial. DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER | MONTH OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS: September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, inviting us to unite our hearts with Mary in her profound sharing of Christ’s Passion. As Simeon foretold, “a sword will pierce your own soul too” (Luke 2:35), and throughout her life Mary endured deep sorrows that culminated at Calvary. In her silent strength and unwavering faith, she became the compassionate Mother of all Christians, offering her suffering with Christ for the salvation of the world.

This month, the Church calls us to meditate on the Seven Sorrows of Mary: Simeon’s prophecy, the Flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple, meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, standing at the foot of the Cross, receiving His lifeless Body, and placing Him in the tomb. By reflecting on these sorrows, we learn patience in trials, compassion for the suffering, and a deeper love for Jesus who suffered for us.

Prayers such as the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows, the Rosary of Our Lady of Sorrows, and the Litany of Our Lady of Sorrows help us to walk with Mary in her suffering and to discover hope and consolation in her maternal heart.

“Most Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, teach us to stand with you at the Cross, sharing in Christ’s love and redemptive sacrifice.”
