Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

“I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life.” Alleluia! Today, the liturgy presents a sobering choice: the narrow gate. We are invited to abandon the broad, effortless highway of cultural conformity and choose the constricted road of radical obedience. This custody of soul is perfectly mirrored in Saint Etheldreda, who left royal courts to protect her vow of purity; Saint Mary of Oignies, who traded wealth for a leper hospice; and Saint Joseph Cafasso, who entered dark prisons to guide the condemned through the gate of final repentance. In the Gospel (Matthew 7:6, 12–14), Jesus commands us to protect our spiritual pearls and live by the Golden Rule, warning that while the road to destruction is crowded, the path to life is narrow and found by few. This reliance is structurally proven in the First Reading (2 Kings 19:9b–11, 14–21, 31–35a, 36), where King Hezekiah spreads an overwhelming enemy threat directly before the altar. The Lord answers with immediate, angelic defense, proving the Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 48): “God upholds his city for ever.”

Are you casually drifting down the broad road of least resistance, or are you aggressively squeezing through the narrow gate of daily discipline? When anxieties corner you, do you scramble for human solutions or spread them out before the Lord?

BIBLE READINGS FOR TODAY’S HOLY MASS:

Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time | USCCB | https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading

Today’s Bible Readings: Tuesday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time | June 23, 2026
Reading I: 2 Kings 19:9b–11, 14–21, 31–35a, 36
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 48:2–3ab, 3cd–4, 10–11
Gospel: Matthew 7:6, 12–14

Gospel Reading ~ Matthew 7:6, 12–14

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many.”

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them underfoot, and turn and tear you to pieces. Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the Law and the Prophets. Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In the Gospel, Jesus outlines the strict boundaries of spiritual custody and path selection, presenting The Preservation of Sacred Pearls and the Demarcation of the Constricted Way. Christ demands a sophisticated spiritual discernment from His disciples, forbidding them from blindly exposing the mysteries of the Kingdom to those who possess a deeply animalistic, hostile contempt for the holy. True charity is never a loose, unprincipled tolerance; it is anchored in the Golden Rule, which perfectly sums up the structural intent of the Law and the Prophets. Jesus then splits humanity into two distinct trajectories by visualizing an architectural choice: the broad, uninhibited highway that demands zero personal mortification but guarantees absolute eternal destruction, versus the razor-thin, constricted gate that forces the soul to strip away its worldly cargo to secure life. He delivers a sobering demographic truth, those who passively drift down the broad road are many, while those who aggressively seek out and squeeze through the narrow boundary are tragically few.

The massive, historical reality of this narrow gate is structurally illustrated in the First Reading through The Taunting of the Living God and the Angelic Defense of Davidic Covenant. King Hezekiah of Judah faces an impending geopolitical annihilation as the massive, undefeated military engine of Sennacherib, King of Assyria, corners Jerusalem. Sennacherib sends a blasphemous letter directly mocking the God of Israel, treating the Almighty as just another localized pagan idol destined to be cast into the fire. Instead of succumbing to panic or seeking worthless human alliances, Hezekiah walks directly into the temple, literally spreads the threatening letter out in the Lord’s presence, and begs for an intervention that will vindicate God’s cosmic sovereignty. The Lord answers through the prophet Isaiah with a thunderous declaration of protective fire: Assyria will not shoot a single arrow or cast up a single siege-work. That very night, a singular angel of the Lord moves through the enemy lines, striking down 185,000 men in the Assyrian camp and forcing the arrogant tyrant to break camp and flee to Nineveh.

The Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 48) serves as the ecstatic, corporate liturgy celebrating this exact supernatural preservation, singing: “God upholds his city for ever.” It pictures Mount Zion as the fairest of heights, the city of the great King where God is actively renowned within her castles as an unshakeable stronghold. The text invites the community to step inside the temple to deeply ponder the historical execution of divine mercy, acknowledging that God’s name, justice, and absolute right hand reach out to the very ends of the earth to flatten the pride of aggressive oppressors.

As we go through this Tuesday, let us examine which road our daily habits are currently treading. Reflect today: Are you casually drifting down the broad highway of least resistance, conforming to cultural opinions and toxic social norms, or are you deliberately squeezing through the narrow gate of daily discipline, chastity, and radical obedience? When secular threats and heavy anxieties “taunt” your peace, do you exhaust yourself with human solutions, or do you have the spiritual maturity to spread your problems out directly before the Lord’s presence in prayer?

Let us pray: Sovereign Lord, God of Israel, You who are beautifully enthroned upon the cherubim and hold the heavens and the earth in Your hands, shield us today from the power of the enemy. Forgive us for the times we have thrown the pearls of our baptismal purity and sacred calling into the dirt, compromising with a world that seeks to trample what is holy. Give us the intense courage to choose the narrow gate and the constricted road of absolute fidelity, even when we must walk it with the few. Teach us to spread out our anxieties before Your altar like Hezekiah, trusting that Your zeal and Your right hand will completely fight our battles for us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT ETHELDREDA (AUDREY), VIRGIN: Saint Etheldreda (c. 636–679 A.D.), widely known as Saint Audrey, was a celebrated Anglo-Saxon queen, an unyielding champion of perpetual virginity, and the illustrious foundress of the great double monastery of Ely. Born near Suffolk as the daughter of the saintly King Anna of East Anglia, she was raised in an extraordinary family lineage that produced multiple saints. Though forced by state obligations and parental pressure into two high-profile political marriages—first to Prince Tonbert and later to Egfrid, the powerful King of Northumbria—Audrey remained resolutely anchored in a private vow of celibacy, living in complete, unconsummated continence with both husbands as a sister rather than a wife. When King Egfrid grew frustrated with this spiritual boundary and attempted to bribe Saint Wilfrid of York to dissolve her vows, the holy bishop refused, orchestrating her daring escape south. Pursued by her husband’s army, a heaven-sent seven-day high tide miraculously cut off the king’s path at Colbert’s Head, forcing him to finally relent. Free to pursue her true calling, Audrey took the religious veil, eventually constructing the massive abbey of Ely where she reigned as a model abbess of radical self-mortification. In her final years, she joyfully embraced an immense, painful neck tumor as a sweet divine retribution for the vain necklaces she had worn in her courtly youth, dying in absolute peace after seven years of flawless spiritual leadership.

PRAYER: Lord God, You showered extraordinary heavenly gifts and an uncompromised love for bodily purity upon Saint Etheldreda. Grant, through her powerful merits and intercession, that we may imitate her complete detachment from the empty vanities and superficial decorations of this world. Bring divine healing to all who are currently suffering from severe neck and throat complaints, tumors, or respiratory illnesses. Give us her intense fortitude to honor our vows and protect what is holy, so that after navigating the broad traps of this life, we may enjoy eternal happiness with her in heaven. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT MARY OF OIGNIES, RELIGIOUS: Saint Mary of Oignies (1177–1213 A.D.) was an angelic Belgian noblewoman, a mystic of spectacular spiritual depth, and a pioneer of the Beguine movement whose life was an extraordinary testament to Eucharistic intimacy and apostolic charity. Born to a wealthy family in Nivelles, she rejected all childish vanities from her youth, but was entered into an arranged marriage at the age of fourteen to a virtuous young lord. Through her radical example and persistent prayers, she successfully converted her husband to her holy way of life; together, they took a mutual vow of perpetual chastity, surrendered their vast family fortune, and converted their own manor into a dedicated leper hospice. Mary spent her days washing the wounds of lepers, bearing the harsh sarcasms of worldly onlookers while operating in a profound “gift of tears” that left her weeping in ecstatic rapture at the foot of the cross. Gifted with stunning prophetic insights, angelic visitations from Saint John the Evangelist, and the ability to read the secret temptations of human hearts, she sustained her body without meat, clothed herself exclusively in white, and practiced severe mortifications to crucify all worldly desires. Seeking complete solitude from the crowds attracted to her holiness, she moved with her husband’s loving permission into a secluded hermit’s cell near the Augustinian house at Oignies, where she spent her final years in deep contemplation before being escorted to her heavenly place amidst the audible songs of angels.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, we thank You for giving us Saint Mary of Oignies as an unyielding icon of compassionate service, pure marital sacrifice, and deep mystical devotion. Grant us, through her celestial intercession, an absolute intolerance for the spirit of worldliness and a profound reverence for the mysteries of Your Passion. Look with sovereign favor upon all expectant mothers and those desperately seeking the fruit of the womb, granting them safe deliveries and relief from painful fevers. May our souls, like Mary’s, be filled with a pure, unquenchable love that converts hardened sinners and brings solace to the souls in Purgatory. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT JOSEPH CAFASSO, PRIEST: Saint Joseph Cafasso (1811–1860 A.D.) was a noble Italian theologian, a legendary confessor, and the illustrious “Priest of the Gallows” whose pastoral kindness transformed the prisons of Turin and shaped the modern Church. Born into a peasant family with a severe physical deformity of the spine that left him stunted and crippled for life, his loving parents made immense sacrifices to fund his seminary education in Turin. Ordained in 1833, Father Cafasso quickly became a brilliant professor of moral theology, radiating an unshakeable confidence in the gentle, loving mercy of God that systematically crushed the rigid errors of his time. He became the spiritual director and mentor to giant saints—most notably the young Saint John Bosco, whom he financially and spiritually guided to begin his massive mission for impoverished youth and the founding of the Salesians. Driven by a burning zeal for marginalized souls, Joseph spent whole days inside disgusting, disease-ridden prisons, hearing confessions and fiercely advocating for human dignity. His most profound apostolate was accompanying prisoners sentenced to public execution; walking with them to the scaffold, he poured out Christ’s mercy so effectively that he led over sixty unrepentant criminals to radical deathbed conversions, beautifully calling them his “hanged saints” as they died in absolute peace.

PRAYER: Almighty and Ever-Living God, You gave Your Church the extraordinary “Priest’s Priest,” Saint Joseph Cafasso, as an uncompromised icon of pastoral solicitude and divine mercy. We humbly ask that, through his powerful intercession, You multiply Your spiritual gifts among our modern clergy, filling our priests and seminarians with an unshakeable zeal, deep moral clarity, and an absolute love for the confessional. Bring hope to all prisoners, comfort to those facing sudden deaths, and order all our days in Your perfect peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

HONORING THE SAINTS OF THE DAY:
As we draw deep inspiration today from the gentle humility of Saint Etheldreda, the intense mystical devotion of Saint Mary of Oignies, and the profound pastoral charity of Saint Joseph Cafasso, the “Priest of the Gallows,” we also turn our hearts to the entire cloud of witnesses sharing this June 23rd feast day. Today, we prayerfully honor and remember SAINT AGRIPPINA, SAINT ETHEIDREDA, SAINT HIDULPHUS, SAINT JAMES OF TOUL, SAINT LIBERT, SAINT MOELRAY, SAINT PETER OF JUILLY, SAINT THOMAS GARNET, AND SAINT WALHERE. Spanning across centuries of Church history, from ancient, courageous virgin-martyrs who stood firm in their witness to zealous missionary priests who faced ultimate sacrifice, and dedicated monastic leaders, their diverse journeys all beautifully reflect the multifaceted grace of God. Remembering them reminds us that we are part of an incredibly vast family of faith, encouraging us to follow their example and walk our own path toward holiness with confidence today.

Our Blessed Mother Mary, Saint Etheldreda, Saint Mary of Oignies, Saint Joseph Cafasso, and all the Saints we celebrate today ~ Pray for us. 🙏🏽

PRAYER INTENTION: FOR SPIRITUAL CUSTODY, COVENANT SHIELDS, AND THE NARROW TRAJECTORY

On this Tuesday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time, we step into the sanctuary of Your presence, O Lord, celebrating that You uphold Your city forever as an unshakeable stronghold. We lift up all youth, seminarians, the poor, the lonely, and those suffering from cancers, terminal illnesses, or modern plagues, asking that Your providential gaze preserve them from all despair. We particularly lay before You all expectant mothers and those seeking the fruit of the womb, asking for the crown of divine fruitfulness. Through the intercession of Saint Etheldreda (Patron against neck and throat complaints), Saint Mary of Oignies (Patron of women in labor and against fevers), and Saint Joseph Cafasso (Patron of prisoners and chaplains), we lay our specific petitions before Your throne. Grant us, Lord, their radical custody of soul to protect our sacred pearls, their iron determination to choose the constricted gate of purity, and their absolute willingness to stand as spiritual guides for the broken and marginalized. Deliver us, O Lord, from the broad and lazy roads of cultural compromise condemned in today’s Gospel. Strip us of the carelessness that throws what is holy before a hostile world, and give us the discipline to squeeze through the narrow gate of daily obedience. Save us from the terrifying threats of the enemy historically illustrated in the First Reading; when the anxieties of life are spread out before us like Sennacherib’s letter, incline Your ear and see our plight. Send forth Your protective fire, shield our families for Your own sake, and let Your right hand completely shatter every oppressive siege trying to cast down our faith. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF JUNE | MONTH OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS: June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a powerful sign of Christ’s love and mercy. His Heart, pierced and crowned with thorns, burns with compassion for all humanity. This devotion calls us to return love for love to console His Heart and make reparation for sin and indifference. Rooted in the revelations to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the Church invites us this month to deepen our trust in Jesus, especially through First Friday devotions, the Litany of the Sacred Heart, and acts of consecration. His words echo in our hearts: “Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart” (Matthew 11:29).

The Sacred Heart shows us what true love looks like patient, humble, and self-giving. In a world often cold and restless, we find peace and healing in His Heart.

“Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You”

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, teach us to love as You love. Fill our hearts with compassion, mercy, and a deep desire to follow You. Amen 🙏🏽

PRAYER FOR THE DEAD
We pray for the repose of the gentle souls of our loved ones and souls of all the faithful departed. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their gentle souls through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace with our Lord Jesus Christ… Amen 🙏🏽

Thanking God for His love and the gift of this glorious day, we offer Him a prayer of gratitude for the graces of the past months and entrust this month of June to His loving providence. We pray for God’s grace and mercy as we anchor ourselves in the steady, life-giving rhythm of Ordinary Time. May the profound mysteries of the Resurrection, the Ascension, and the fresh fire of the Holy Spirit, which we have so beautifully celebrated, continue to help us seek You in every moment of our lives. May the peace, hope, and divine communion that flow from the Most Holy Trinity shape our steps, inform our decisions, and strengthen our resolve to live each day in the light of Christ and the daily guidance of the Advocate. As we journey onward through the rest of this month, may God bless our families and loved ones, and may His light continue to shine brightly in every home. Let us draw closer to God and be renewed through the joy of the Gospel, the gifts of the Spirit, and generosity to the poor. May God keep us all safe and well during these challenging times. Wishing us all a spiritually enriching, most blessed, and grace-filled journey ahead. Amen. 🙏🏽

Save Us, Savior of the World. Our Blessed Mother Mary, Saint Etheldreda, Saint Mary of Oignies, and Saint Joseph Cafasso ~ Pray for us. 🙏🏽
