Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, on the Memorial of Saint Bernard, Abbot and Doctor of the Church, the Gospel presents the Parable of the Wedding Feast, reminding us that while God’s invitation to salvation is universally offered, we must clothe our hearts in repentance, charity, and true holiness. Today, as we enter day three of our Novena to Saint Monica, we continue to pray with unwavering faith for the conversion and spiritual restoration of our children and loved ones. Alongside her novena, we honor Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the “Mellifluous Doctor” whose passionate preaching, profound writings on Our Lady, and zeal for monastic reform renewed the Church in the 12th century, and Saint Bernardo Tolomei, a prominent Italian lawyer who left worldly success to embrace a life of prayer and heroic charity, caring for plague victims until his death. Inspired by their holiness and total devotion, let us present ourselves at the Lord’s altar with clean, converted hearts.

“Many are invited, but few are chosen.”

“Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and the elders of the people in parables saying, ‘The Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, “Tell those invited: ‘Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast.'” Some ignored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then the king said to his servants, “The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.” The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to meet the guests he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment. He said to him, “My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?” But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, “Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness outside, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.” Many are invited, but few are chosen.'”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In today’s Gospel, Jesus uses the Parable of the Wedding Feast to reveal the urgent nature of God’s invitation to salvation and the radical transformation required to receive it. God generously extends His invitation to all, yet many reject Him by prioritizing worldly pursuits, business, or indifference. When the banquet is opened to everyone on the highways—both good and bad alike—Christ reveals that while God’s grace is universally offered, responding to His call demands an interior conversion. The guest without a wedding garment represents a soul that accepts the external invitation to the Kingdom but refuses to clothe itself in repentance, charity, and true holiness. By concluding with the sobering warning, “Many are invited, but few are chosen,” Jesus reminds us that salvation requires more than mere presence; it demands a heart visibly clothed in the righteousness of Christ.

In the First Reading, the prophet Ezekiel proclaims God’s transformative promise of spiritual renewal to a scattered and sinful people. God promises to cleanse Israel from idolatry, declaring, “I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts.” The Responsorial Psalm echoes this deep longing for inner renewal through Psalm 51: “A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me.” True ritual or religious standing is worthless without an authentic, humble, and contrite spirit. God Himself provides the divine grace to wash away our sins and bestow the spiritual “wedding garment” of a renewed heart.

Together, these readings remind us that God’s mercy is an unmerited gift that demands a genuine transformation of life. We cannot remain complacent in our spiritual habits or wear the garments of worldliness while claiming a seat at the Lord’s heavenly banquet. Christ invites us to abandon our stony hearts, allow His Spirit to cleanse us from interior idolatry, and put on the virtues of faith, love, and obedience so that we may be truly ready to celebrate with Him in His Kingdom.

Are you presenting yourself at the Lord’s banquet with a heart truly clothed in repentance and conversion, or are you holding onto a “stony heart” of worldliness? May we allow God to sprinkle clean water upon us today, renewing our spirits and clothing us in the grace of Christ.

Heavenly Father, You extend to us the gracious invitation to enter into eternal communion with Your Son at the heavenly banquet. Forgive us for the times we prioritize worldly distractions, ignore Your call, or approach Your sacred presence with a complacent and unrepentant heart. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and remove every stone of pride, indifference, and sin from our souls. Clothe us in the wedding garment of true conversion, love, and righteousness, so that we may remain faithfully united to You now and forever. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX, ABBOT AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090–1153) was a French Cistercian abbot, theologian, and Doctor of the Church known as the “Mellifluous (Honey-Sweet) Doctor” for his incredible eloquence. Entering the monastery of Cîteaux at age 22 along with 30 noble companions, he went on to found the famous Abbey of Clairvaux, establishing 163 Cistercian monasteries across Europe. A powerful reformer, peacemaker, and counselor to popes, Bernard defended the faith, healed Church schisms, and wrote tenderly on devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, emphasizing her essential role as the model of Christian life. He was canonized in 1174 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1830. He is the Patron Saint of beekeepers, candlemakers, and Gibraltar.

PRAYER: O God, You blessed Your Church with Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, a man full of zeal for Your house, radiating brightness and ardent love. Through his intercession, grant that we may be animated by the same spirit of prayer and devotion, walking always as children of light. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT BERNARDO TOLOMEI, PRIEST

Saint Bernardo Tolomei (1272–1348) was an Italian nobleman, lawyer, and politician from Siena. After miraculously recovering his sight through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he abandoned his worldly career to live as a hermit in the Desert of Accona. He founded the Olivetan Benedictine Congregation (Monks of Santa Maria di Monte Oliveto), centered on strict prayer, deep fraternal unity, and devotion to Our Lady. When the Black Death plague devastated Siena in 1348, Bernard and his brothers courageously returned to the city to nurse the sick and dying, where he ultimately contracted the plague and died a martyr of charity. He was canonized in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI and is the Patron Saint of the Olivetan Congregation.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, You called Saint Bernardo Tolomei to forsake worldly honors to serve You in solitude and heroic charity toward the sick. Through his intercession, grant us the grace to deny ourselves, serve the suffering with compassionate hearts, and remain steadfast in Your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

Through the intercession of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, we pray for our Holy Father, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, and Religious; grant them wisdom, zeal for souls, and a deep love for the Blessed Mother, and send an abundance of holy vocations to the Church. Inspired by Saint Bernardo Tolomei, we pray for the poor, the abandoned, and those facing financial hardships. Lord, bring comfort and healing to the sick and dying, especially those suffering from cancer and terminal illnesses, and grant peace, love, and lasting unity to our marriages and families.
