Greetings and blessings, beloved family and Happy World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly! 🙏🏾

To all grandparents and elderly loved ones today, we honor and celebrate you. Thank you for your enduring love, your prayers that uphold families, and the wisdom you pass on with gentle strength. Your lives are a gift to the Church and the world, a living testimony of faith, hope, and perseverance. May God bless you abundantly with peace, health, and joy. May you feel the love of your family, the embrace of the Church, and the presence of Christ, who walks with you always. We cherish you. We need you. We love you. 🌹❤️🌹

Today, the Church celebrates the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In our devotional life today, we also look to the inspiring example of Saints Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary and Grandparents of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Today’s liturgy invites us to recognize the surpassing worth of God’s Kingdom—the true pearl of great price—and to seek an understanding heart capable of discerning His divine wisdom above all worldly riches. This quiet, steadfast faith was beautifully embodied by Saints Joachim and Anne, who endured the painful sorrow of childlessness with persistent prayer and fasting, trusting in God’s promises until they were blessed with the Immaculate Conception of Mary. As they lovingly nurtured the Mother of God, they laid a sacred foundation for the salvation of the world, reminding us of the immense dignity of family life, Christian parenting, and the vital role of grandparents. May we emulate their patient endurance today, surrender every lesser attachment, and cultivate hearts that prioritize the eternal treasure of God’s grace.

Today’s Bible Readings for Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time | July 26, 2026
Reading I:
1 Kings 3:5, 7-12
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 119:57, 72, 76-77, 127-128, 129-130
Reading II: Romans 8:28-30
Gospel: Matthew 13:44-52

GOSPEL READING ~ MATTHEW 13:44-52

“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”

“Jesus said to his disciples: “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind. When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. ‘Do you understand all these things?’ They answered, ‘Yes.’ And he replied, ‘Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.’””

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In today’s Gospel, Jesus concludes His profound discourse on parables with three vivid images of the Kingdom of Heaven: the Buried Treasure, the Pearl of Great Price, and the Dragnet. In the first two parables, Christ highlights the incomparable value of God’s reign and the total commitment required to possess it. Whether discovered unexpectedly like a treasure in a field or sought after through a deliberate quest like a merchant seeking fine pearls, the reaction to encountering the Kingdom is identical: overflowing joy that leads a person to sell everything they have to make it their own. Jesus reveals that entering the Kingdom is not a burdensome loss, but a supreme gain; when we truly grasp the priceless worth of communion with God, surrendering worldly distractions and lesser attachments becomes a joyful, natural exchange.

The third parable of the dragnet echoes the reality of divine judgment and patience, picturing the Church and the world as a net gathering fish of every kind. Just as the fishermen sit down on the shore at the end of the day to separate the good from the bad, so will the angels separate the righteous from the wicked at the end of the age. Jesus challenges His disciples and us to consider what we truly value most and to prepare our hearts for eternity. Finally, by comparing the instructed scribe to the head of a household bringing out both new and old treasures, Jesus invites us to appreciate how the ancient promises of God are beautifully fulfilled and brought to perfection in Him.

The First Reading from the First Book of Kings illustrates a heart that already understands what is truly precious in the eyes of God. When the young King Solomon is invited by the Lord in a dream to ask for whatever he desires, he does not ask for long life, immense wealth, or political power over his enemies. Instead, acknowledging his youth and human inadequacy to lead God’s vast people, Solomon asks for an understanding heart to distinguish right from wrong. God is deeply pleased with Solomon’s selfless request and grants him a wise and understanding heart beyond measure. Solomon’s choice reminds us that spiritual wisdom, moral clarity, and divine guidance are far superior to any earthly honor or material gain.

The Responsorial Psalm powerfully reinforces this theme of valuing God’s truth above all earthly riches, triumphantly declaring: “Lord, I love your commands.” The psalmist proclaims that the law of God’s mouth is more precious than thousands of gold and silver pieces, serving as a shining lamp that sheds light and gives understanding to the simple. When our hearts delight in God’s word, His precepts become our steady guide, comforting us in times of distress and keeping us anchored on the path of righteousness.

The Second Reading from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Romans offers one of the most comforting assurances in all of Sacred Scripture: “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” Saint Paul lays out the magnificent trajectory of divine providence, reminding us that God foreknew, predestined, called, justified, and glorified us to be conformed to the image of His Son. No matter what trials, uncertainties, or setbacks we encounter in this life, God’s sovereign love is actively weaving every detail of our existence together for our ultimate spiritual good and eternal glory.

As we celebrate this Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we are invited to perform an honest audit of our daily priorities and deepest desires. What is the “pearl of great price” in your life right now? Are you spending your precious time and energy chasing perishable riches, status, or worldly security, or are you prioritizing the hidden treasure of an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ? Like Solomon, do you pray for wisdom and an understanding heart to navigate your daily decisions, studies, work, and relationships? Today, let us ask for the grace to joyfully surrender whatever holds us back from God, trusting that in Christ, all things are working together for our eternal good.

Let us pray: Lord Almighty, You are the supreme Treasure and the Pearl of Great Price who alone satisfies the longings of the human heart. Forgive us for the times we have pursued empty, fleeting riches and ignored the priceless gift of Your Kingdom. Grant us, as You gave to Solomon, an understanding heart to discern Your will and distinguish good from evil in our daily lives. Give us the courage to surrender all attachments that hinder our faith, and fill us with the peaceful confidence that You are orchestrating all things for our good. Preserve us in Your grace, guide our families and communities, and bring us safely to share in Your eternal glory. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINTS JOACHIM AND ANNE: Saints Joachim and Anne (1st century B.C.), members of the tribe of Judah and descendants of King David, are revered as the holy parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to tradition, they lived in a time when barrenness was seen as a curse. Childless and advanced in age, they turned to God with fervent prayers and fasting, seeking His mercy. Their faithful perseverance was rewarded when angels appeared separately to each of them, announcing that they would bear a child destined to be honored through all generations.

This child was Mary, the Immaculate Conception, the one chosen to become the Mother of God. Their moment of joy and reunion is often depicted in sacred art as their embrace at Jerusalem’s Golden Gate. In gratitude, they dedicated Mary to God and, when she was three years old, presented her to live in the Temple a sign of their deep faith and trust in God’s plan.

St. Anne is often portrayed teaching young Mary the Scriptures, embodying maternal wisdom, gentleness, and virtue. She is the patron of mothers, grandmothers, women in labor, and childless couples. Many women seeking a spouse or a healthy pregnancy invoke her aid. St. Joachim, though less prominently featured in tradition, is honored as the patron of fathers, grandfathers, and grandparents. His quiet strength and steadfastness mirror that of so many unsung spiritual heads of families.

Their veneration began in the early Church, with St. Anne especially honored in the East. Churches were erected in their memory, and their feast was widely celebrated by the 6th century. Though liturgical calendars shifted their memorials over the centuries, they are now jointly celebrated on July 26. They remind us of the dignity of marriage, the sacred role of parenting, and the quiet faithfulness that lays the foundation for God’s work in the world.

Let us look to Saints Joachim and Anne as models of hope, faith, and steadfast love saints who trusted God even in times of great sorrow and were rewarded with joy that echoed into eternity.

PRAYER: O Lord our God, You gave Saints Joachim and Anne the grace to be the parents of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and the grandparents of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Through their intercession, we pray for grandparents and the elderly, for childless couples, expectant mothers, and families struggling in faith. Grant us the grace to follow their example of faith, perseverance, and holiness, so that we too may prepare a place for Christ in our lives. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏾

HONORING THE SAINTS OF THE DAY:
As we draw deep inspiration today from the faithful, enduring devotion and sacred parenthood of Saints Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandparents of Jesus, we also turn our hearts to the rest of the holy assembly sharing this July 26th feast day. Today, we prayerfully honor and remember BLESSED ANDREW OF PHU YEN, SAINT BARTHOLOMEA CAPITANIO, SAINT ERASTUS, SAINT HYACINTH, BLESSED JOHN INGRAM, SAINT PASTOR, SAINT VALENS, AND BLESSED WILLIAM WARD. Spanning across centuries and lands, from early apostolic companions and ancient martyrs to dedicated foundresses, courageous English martyrs, and the first martyr of Vietnam, their diverse lives all beautifully reflect the multifaceted grace of God. Remembering them reminds us that we belong to an incredibly vast family of faith, encouraging us to follow their example and walk our own path toward holiness with confidence today.

Our Blessed Mother Mary, Saints Joachim and Anne, and all the Saints we celebrate today ~ Pray for us. 🙏🏽

PRAYER INTENTION: FAMILY HOLINESS, GRANDPARENTS, AND THE GIFT OF CHILDREN

Heavenly Father, You are the ultimate Treasure and the source of all wisdom who grants understanding hearts to those who love and seek You. As we gather with our families and communities on this Day, grant us the grace to value Your Kingdom above all earthly riches and to discern Your holy will in every decision. Through the loving intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary and her holy parents, Saints Joachim and Anne (Patrons of grandparents, marriages, childless couples, expectant mothers, and women in labor), we humbly lift up our prayers to You. We pray for all grandparents and the elderly, that they may be cherished and filled with peace; for childless couples, that You may bless them with the gift of children; for safe deliveries for all expectant mothers; and for the spiritual protection and unity of all families. Lord, comfort the sick and dying, especially those suffering from cancers and terminal illnesses, provide for the poor and needy, and grant Your healing touch to all facing hardship. Shield the Universal Church, sustain our Pope and Clergy, protect persecuted Christians, and lead all sinners to true conversion. May our homes become fertile ground where Your grace flourishes and produces a rich harvest for Your glory. Amen. 🙏🏽

On this World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, we give thanks for the gift of our elders, those who have passed down faith, wisdom, and love through generations. We pray for grandparents who feel forgotten, for the elderly who live in isolation, and for those nearing the end of life without comfort or companionship. May families be united in love, and may younger generations listen attentively to the stories and guidance of their elders. We also pray for all caregivers, both family and professional, who serve with compassion and dignity.

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF JULY | MONTH OF THE MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS: July is dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ a profound devotion that honors the redeeming power of Christ’s Blood shed for our salvation. Flowing from His Sacred Heart, this Blood is the price of our redemption, the source of grace in the sacraments, and the seal of the New Covenant. It reminds us that salvation was not won lightly, but through the ultimate sacrifice of love. This month, the Church invites us to meditate on the infinite value of Christ’s Blood poured out during His Passion from Gethsemane to Calvary and in every celebration of the Holy Eucharist. We are called to offer acts of reparation for the sins of the world and to intercede for the conversion of souls. Devotions such as the Litany of the Precious Blood, the Chaplet of the Precious Blood, and daily consecration to the Precious Blood help deepen our union with Christ crucified.

As Saint John Chrysostom once said, “The Precious Blood is the salvation of souls; it purifies, sanctifies, and strengthens.” In our trials, let us take refuge beneath the cross, trusting in the Blood that speaks of mercy, victory, and eternal life.

“Precious Blood of Jesus, save us and the whole world.”

O Most Precious Blood of Jesus, fountain of salvation, we adore You. Wash us clean of sin, protect us from evil, and draw us into deeper love and union with You. Amen. 🙏🏽

PRAYER FOR THE DEAD
We pray for the repose of the gentle souls of our loved ones and souls of all the faithful departed. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their gentle souls through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace with our Lord Jesus Christ… Amen 🙏🏽

Thanking God for His love and the gift of this glorious day, we offer Him a prayer of gratitude for the graces of the past months and entrust this month of July to His loving providence. We pray for God’s grace and mercy as we anchor ourselves in the steady, life-giving rhythm of Ordinary Time. May the profound mysteries of the Cross, the cleansing power of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, and the enduring fire of the Holy Spirit continue to help us seek You in every moment of our lives. May the peace, hope, and divine communion that flow from the Heart of our Redeemer shape our steps, inform our decisions, and strengthen our resolve to live each day in the light of Christ and the daily guidance of the Advocate. As we journey onward through the rest of this month, may God bless our families and loved ones, and may His light continue to shine brightly in every home. Let us draw closer to God and be renewed through the joy of the Gospel, the gifts of the Spirit, and generosity to the poor. May God keep us all safe and well during these challenging times. Wishing us all a spiritually enriching, most blessed, and grace-filled journey ahead. Amen. 🙏🏽

Save Us, Savior of the World. Our Blessed Mother Mary, Saints Joachim and Anne, and all the Saints we celebrate today ~ Pray for us. 🙏🏽

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you. Jesus, I trust in you! Immaculate Heart of Mary, Pray for us. Amen 🙏🏽

Blessings and Love always, Philomena 💖
