Greetings and blessings, beloved family!
Today, on the Feast of Saint Januarius and the commemoration of Our Lady of La Salette, the Church honors heroic witnesses who call us back to holiness, repentance, and deep trust in God. Today’s Gospel features Jesus’ Parable of the Sower, urging us to cultivate a generous and open heart to receive His Word, while the First Reading from Saint Paul reminds us of our glorious transformation and hope in the resurrection. Inspired by Our Lady’s tears of love and St. Januarius’s steadfast martyrdom, let us open our hearts to bear rich fruit in Christ.
BIBLE READINGS FOR TODAY’S HOLY MASS:
Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time | USCCB | https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading
Today’s Bible Readings: Saturday of the Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time | Saturday, September 19, 2026
Reading 1: 1 Corinthians 15:35-37, 42-49
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 56:10c-12, 13-14
Gospel: Luke 8:4-15
Gospel Reading ~ Luke 8:4-15
“Blessed are they who have kept the word with a generous heart and yield a harvest through perseverance.”
“When a large crowd gathered, with people from one town after another journeying to Jesus, he spoke in a parable. ‘A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path… and some fell on rich soil, and when it grew, it produced fruit a hundredfold.’ … ‘This is the meaning of the parable. The seed is the word of God. Those on the path are the ones who have heard, but the Devil comes and takes away the word… But as for the seed that fell on rich soil, they are the ones who, when they have heard the word, embrace it with a generous and good heart, and bear fruit through perseverance.'”
SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS
Today’s readings invite us to examine the condition of our hearts and the ultimate transformation God has prepared for us through faith. In the Gospel, Jesus shares the well-known Parable of the Sower, explaining that the seed represents the Word of God. The productivity of the seed depends entirely on the soil where it lands. If our hearts are hardened like the path, distracted by temptations like the rocky ground, or choked by the anxieties, riches, and pleasures of life like the thorns, the Word cannot take deep root. But when we cultivate a generous and good heart, embracing the Word of God with perseverance, our lives yield an abundant harvest.
This theme of transformation and growth is brilliantly echoed by Saint Paul in the First Reading. Using the imagery of a seed, Paul explains the mystery of the resurrection of the dead. Just as a seed must “die” to come to new life in a glorious, incorruptible, and spiritual form, our earthly bodies will one day be transformed to bear the image of the heavenly Christ. We are destined for glory, as the Responsorial Psalm joyfully proclaims: “I will walk in the presence of God, in the light of the living.”
Today, let us reflect on how well we are receiving the Word of God. Are the cares of the world choking our spiritual growth, or are we allowing God’s grace to transform us into rich soil ready to bear eternal fruit? How do the daily anxieties and distractions of life affect your relationship with God’s Word, and what can you do to cultivate a more generous and persevering heart?
Heavenly Father, we thank You for planting the seed of Your Word in our hearts. Forgive us for the times when our lives have been too crowded with anxieties, distractions, and worldly riches, allowing Your word to be choked or stolen away. Grant us the grace to cultivate a generous, open, and persevering heart so that we may receive Your truth deeply and bear an abundant harvest. Strengthen our faith in the promise of the resurrection, that we may live each day walking in Your light and striving toward the heavenly glory You have prepared for us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽
SAINTS OF THE DAY | SEPTEMBER 19TH:
Direct link to the detailed history of Our Lady of La Salette, and Saint Januarius | https://dailyreflectionswithphilomena.com/saints-of-the-day-feast-day-september-19th/
OUR LADY OF LA SALETTE: On September 19, 1846, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in tears on the mountain of La Salette in the French Alps to two shepherd children, Maximin Giraud and Mélanie Calvat. Surrounded by light, she called humanity to repentance, fidelity to God’s commandments, and respect for the Lord’s name and holy days. Approved by the Church, her message remains a tender maternal plea to turn away from sin and draw closer to her Son.
PRAYER: O Mary, Reconciler of sinners, Mother of mercy and compassion, who wept for our sins at La Salette, obtain for us the grace of true repentance and conversion of heart. May we be faithful to God’s commandments, honor His holy day, and live as witnesses of His mercy. Amen. 🙏🏾
SAINT JANUARIUS, BISHOP AND MARTYR: Saint Januarius (d. 305 A.D.) was the Bishop of Benevento, Italy, who suffered a courageous martyrdom by beheading during the fierce persecution of Emperor Diocletian after tirelessly protecting fellow Christians. He is globally renowned for the centuries-old miracle associated with his relics, where his dried blood, sealed in a glass vial in the Naples cathedral, miraculously liquefies on specific feast days.
PRAYER: God, You enable us to celebrate the memorial of Your Martyr, St. Januarius. Grant that we may also enjoy his company in eternal beatitude. Amen. 🙏🏽
HONORING THE SAINTS OF THE DAY:
Alongside Our Lady of La Salette and Saint Januarius, we also honor: BLESSED ALPHONSUS DE OROZCO, SAINT ARNULF, SAINT EMILY DE RODAT, SAINT EUSTOCHINS, SAINT GOERIC OF METZ, SAINT MARIA DE CEREVELLON, SAINT PELEUS, SAINT POMPOSA, SAINT SEQUANUUS, SAINT THEODORE OF TARSUS, BLESSED THOMAS AKAFUJI, AND SAINT TROPHIMUS. May their faithful lives inspire our own journey today.
PRAYER INTENTION: FOR A FRUITFUL HEART, RENEWED CONVERSION, AND HOPE IN THE RESURRECTION
Heavenly Father, You call us continually to turn back to You through the loving warnings of Our Blessed Mother at La Salette and the courageous witness of holy martyrs like Saint Januarius. Through their intercession, grant us the grace to clear away the thorns and anxieties of this life so that Your Word may take deep root in our hearts. Strengthen our faith in the promise of the resurrection, heal our spiritual blindness, and fill us with a generous perseverance to bear an abundant harvest for Your kingdom. Guide our Holy Father, bishops, and all the faithful, and keep us always walking in the light of Your presence. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER | MONTH OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS: September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, inviting us to unite our hearts with Mary in her profound sharing of Christ’s Passion. As Simeon foretold, “a sword will pierce your own soul too” (Luke 2:35), and throughout her life Mary endured deep sorrows that culminated at Calvary. In her silent strength and unwavering faith, she became the compassionate Mother of all Christians, offering her suffering with Christ for the salvation of the world.
This month, the Church calls us to meditate on the Seven Sorrows of Mary: Simeon’s prophecy, the Flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple, meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, standing at the foot of the Cross, receiving His lifeless Body, and placing Him in the tomb. By reflecting on these sorrows, we learn patience in trials, compassion for the suffering, and a deeper love for Jesus who suffered for us.
Prayers such as the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows, the Rosary of Our Lady of Sorrows, and the Litany of Our Lady of Sorrows help us to walk with Mary in her suffering and to discover hope and consolation in her maternal heart.
“Most Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, teach us to stand with you at the Cross, sharing in Christ’s love and redemptive sacrifice.”
Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us. Amen 🙏🏾
