Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, on the Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist, the Gospel presents the tragic yet glorious account of John’s martyrdom, challenging us to stand firm in God’s truth regardless of worldly pressure or opposition. Today, we honor Saint John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Lord, who sealed his fearless witness to righteousness with his own blood. We also celebrate Saint Sabina of Rome, a noblewoman who embraced the Christian faith through her holy slave, Saint Serapia, and joyfully surrendered her status and life for Christ. Inspired by their heroic fidelity, let us reject human respect, choose righteousness over convenience, and boast in the power of the Lord alone.

Gospel Reading ~ Mark 6:17-29

“I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”

“Herod was the one who had John the Baptist arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. John had said to Herod, ‘It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.’ Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee. Herodias’ own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, ‘Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.’ He even swore many things to her, ‘I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom.’ She went out and said to her mother, ‘What shall I ask for?’ She replied, ‘The head of John the Baptist.’ The girl hurried back to the king’s presence and made her request, ‘I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.’ The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her. So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. The girl in turn gave it to her mother. When his disciples heard about it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In today’s Gospel, we witness the solemn recount of the martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist. As the forerunner of Christ, John lived and died with unyielding fidelity to the truth. He did not hesitate to speak out against moral corruption, even when addressing King Herod’s unlawful marriage. John’s death exposes the tragedy of worldly fear and human respect: Herod knew John was a holy man and listened to him with interest, yet out of pride and fear of what his banquet guests would think, he ordered the execution of an innocent prophet. Saint John the Baptist reminds us that standing for God’s truth often demands courage, self-denial, and a willingness to face opposition.

In the First Reading, Saint Paul reminds the Corinthians that God chooses what the world considers weak, foolish, or lowly to accomplish His divine purposes. John the Baptist did not possess worldly armies or political power; his strength lay entirely in his humble submission to God’s call, preparing the way for Christ. Human glory fades, but those who boast in the Lord stand secure forever. The Responsorial Psalm reinforces this truth with Psalm 33: “Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.” It assures us that the eyes of the Lord remain upon those who fear Him and place their hope in His steadfast love.

These readings challenge us to examine where our true loyalty lies. Are we willing to speak and live the truth of the Gospel, even when it is unpopular or costly, or do we yield to peer pressure like Herod? We are invited to embrace the holy boldness of Saint John the Baptist, trusting that our ultimate reward is found in God alone.

Are you willing to stand up for God’s truth in your daily life, even when it brings discomfort or opposition? How can you rely more on God’s strength rather than seeking approval from those around you?

Lord Jesus Christ, You gave Saint John the Baptist the courage to be a fearless witness to Your truth in life and in death. Grant us the grace of holy boldness, that we may never compromise our faith out of human fear or the desire for worldly approval. Strengthen us to stand up for righteousness, purity, and truth in our families, workplaces, and communities. Keep us humble, Lord, that we may always boast not in ourselves, but in Your redeeming grace and love. For You live and reign forever and ever. Amen. 🙏🏽

THE PASSION OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST, MARTYR: Today the universal Church commemorates the martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist, the forerunner and voice crying in the wilderness who prepared the way for Christ. A fearless preacher of truth and penance, John pointed the world to Jesus as the Lamb of God. When King Herod Antipas entered into an adulterous and unlawful marriage with his sister-in-law Herodias, John boldly denounced the scandal to his face. Out of bitter hatred, Herodias sought revenge, ultimately orchestrating John’s execution. Delighted by a dance from Herodias’ daughter, Salome, Herod foolishly swore to give her whatever she desired; at her mother’s prompting, she demanded the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Rather than lose face before his banquet guests, Herod ordered John beheaded in prison. Saint John’s death stands as a powerful testament to unyielding integrity, truth, and holy courage in the face of corrupt power.

PRAYER: O God, You chose Saint John the Baptist to be the forerunner of Your Son in both His birth and His death. Grant that, as Saint John gave his life for the sake of truth and justice, we may boldly and courageously profess our faith in You every day. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT SABINA OF ROME, MARTYR (D. 126 A.D.): Today we also honor Saint Sabina, a wealthy Roman noblewoman and widow. Converted to the Christian faith through the holy example and witness of her Syrian slave, Saint Serapia, Sabina transformed her home into a sanctuary and secret place of worship for persecuted Christians. When Serapia was martyred for her faith, Sabina courageously gave her an honorable burial. For this act of devotion and her refusal to worship pagan gods, Sabina was arrested, condemned, and beheaded under Emperor Hadrian. She was laid to rest alongside her beloved teacher, St. Serapia, on the Aventine Hill in Rome, where the ancient Basilica of Santa Sabina stands today.

PRAYER: Almighty and eternal God, who gave Saint Sabina the courage to embrace the Gospel and stand firm amidst persecution, grant through her intercession that we may serve You with pure and courageous hearts. Amen. 🙏🏽

Heavenly Father, on this solemn memorial of Saint John the Baptist’s martyrdom and the feast of Saint Sabina, we come before You asking for the grace of unwavering courage and holy boldness. Through the intercession of Saint John the Baptist, grant our Holy Father, Bishops, Priests, and all Christian leaders the strength to preach the truth of the Gospel without fear of human judgment or worldly pressure. Lord, look with mercy upon all persecuted Christians across the globe and protect those suffering under tyrannical systems, injustice, or corrupt leadership. Through the prayers of Saint Sabina, strengthen all families, heal the sick and suffering, comfort those in mourning, and grant that our young people may find the grace to resist moral compromises. Fill our hearts with Your Holy Spirit that we may always choose truth over convenience and live for Your glory alone. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽
