Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, on the Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Gospel reminds us that true greatness in God’s Kingdom is found not in seeking human honors or titles, but in embracing the lowliness of a servant: “Whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” As we enter day five of our Novena to Saint Monica, we unite our heartfelt prayers with hers, persistently interceding for the conversion, spiritual renewal, and return to the Church of our children, spouses, and loved ones. Today, we look to Our Blessed Mother, Queen of Heaven and Earth, whose humble fiat made her the dwelling place of God’s glory and the Queen Mother at the side of Christ the King. Alongside Our Lady, we honor the heroic witness of Saints Timothy, Hippolytus, and Symphorian, Martyrs, and the courageous fidelity of Saint John Kemble, Priest, who chose martyrdom over abandoning his flock. Guided by Our Lady’s maternal intercession, let us offer our lives in humble, steadfast service to Christ.

“The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

“Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues, greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation “Rabbi.” As for you, do not be called “Rabbi.” You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers. Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven. Do not be called “Master”; you have but one master, the Christ. The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.'”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers a direct and piercing critique of religious hypocrisy, self-glorification, and pride. He warns His disciples against the example of the scribes and Pharisees, who used spiritual authority not for humble service, but for ostentatious display, prestige, and personal praise. Christ exposes the spiritual emptiness of seeking titles, places of honor, and external appearances of piety while ignoring the weight of authentic charity. True greatness in the Kingdom of God is completely inverted: it is measured not by how many people serve us, but by how humbly and faithfully we serve others. By pronouncing that “whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted,” Jesus establishes humility as the essential gateway to divine favor, calling every believer to abandon the pursuit of human applause and embrace the heart of a servant.

In the First Reading, the prophet Ezekiel is granted a breathtaking vision of the divine glory of the Lord returning to fill the newly restored Temple from the east, roaring like many waters and shining with radiant light. God promises to dwell intimately among His people forever, sanctifying the sanctuary with His presence. The Responsorial Psalm harmonizes with this glorious promise through the joyful proclamation of Psalm 85: “The glory of the Lord will dwell in our land.” On this feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we see how God’s glorious presence finds its most perfect earthly temple in the humble Virgin of Nazareth. Because she regarded the lowliness of her handmaid status, the Almighty filled her with His glory and exalted her as Queen of Heaven and Earth.

Together, these readings contrast the destructive folly of self-exaltation with the eternal beauty of God-given honor. The Pharisees sought human glory and were humbled, whereas the humble dwelling place of God, prefigured in Ezekiel’s Temple and embodied in Our Lady is filled with the radiance of divine majesty. When we lower ourselves in sincere humility and love, God makes our souls His dwelling place, lifting us up by His grace and transforming our lives into vessels of His everlasting glory.

Are you seeking the recognition and praise of others, or are you striving to serve with a quiet, humble heart? May we follow the humble path of Mary, allowing God’s glory to fill our lives through selfless love and service.

Heavenly Father, You resist the proud but pour out Your lavish grace upon the humble. Forgive us for the moments we have sought human approval, places of honor, or allowed vanity to taint our service to You. Fill our hearts with genuine humility, that like the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may find our greatest joy in being Your humble servants. Cleanse our souls to be fitting temples of Your Holy Spirit, and grant us the grace to lift the burdens of our brothers and sisters with selfless love and compassion. Through Christ our Lord. THE QUEENSHIP OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY: On August 22nd, the Church celebrates Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth. This feast flows naturally from the Solemnity of the Assumption, celebrated a week earlier, affirming that the one who bore the King of Kings shares in His glory and reigns at His side. In Israel’s tradition, the mother of the king was honored as queen mother, a role fulfilled perfectly by Mary in the Kingdom of her Son. Pope Pius XII, in his 1954 encyclical Ad Caeli Reginam, officially instituted this feast for the universal Church, affirming that the faithful had long honored Mary’s royal dignity. Her queenship is not of earthly power but of maternal intercession, spiritual authority, and tender love. Mary is Queen because she uniquely shared in Christ’s work of redemption by giving Him flesh, by uniting her will to His sacrifice, and by leading all her children to the throne of grace.

PRAYER: O God, who crowned the Blessed Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth, grant that through her intercession we may serve Christ faithfully in this life and share in His glory for all eternity. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINTS TIMOTHY, HIPPOLYTUS, AND SYMPHORIAN, MARTYRS: Though unrelated in life, these three martyrs share a common feast on August 22nd, each bearing witness to Christ in different times and places. Saint Timothy of Antioch (d. 311): Preached the Gospel in Rome during a time of fierce persecution. After imprisonment, torture, and cruel beatings, he was executed by beheading. His steadfastness encouraged many Christians, and his name endures in the earliest martyrologies. Saint Hippolytus of Ostia (d. 225): A bishop and faithful shepherd, he was drowned for his faith, winning the crown of martyrdom under Roman authority. Saint Symphorian of Autun (d. 178): A young man executed for refusing to worship pagan idols during the reign of Marcus Aurelius. His mother, Blessed Augusta, famously encouraged him as he went to his death: “My son, remember eternal life; life is not taken from you, but exchanged for a better one.” His cult spread widely in Gaul, inspiring generations of Christians.

PRAYER: Grant us, O Lord, through the prayers of Your holy martyrs Timothy, Hippolytus, and Symphorian, the courage to endure suffering for the sake of Your name and the grace to remain faithful until the end. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT JOHN KEMBLE, PRIEST (1599–1679): Born in Herefordshire, England, John Kemble was ordained a priest in 1625 and ministered faithfully for over fifty years in a time when Catholicism was outlawed. Despite the danger, he quietly served his flock with pastoral care, bringing the sacraments to those in need. In 1679, during the hysteria of the Popish Plot, he was arrested at the age of eighty. Though innocent of treason, he was condemned simply for being a Catholic priest. Offered chances to escape, he refused, saying: “It will be an advantage to suffer for my religion, and therefore I will not abscond.” On August 22, 1679, he was hanged, drawn, and quartered, joyfully accepting death as a witness to Christ. Canonized in 1970 as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, Saint John Kemble reminds us that fidelity to Christ is worth more than life itself.

PRAYER: Lord, You gave Saint John Kemble the courage to shepherd Your flock in times of persecution and to face death with steadfast faith. Through his intercession, strengthen us in our witness to the Gospel, and grant peace to all who suffer for their faith today. Amen. 🙏🏾

Through the motherly tears and prayers of Saint Monica, we ask for the conversion, repentance, and spiritual restoration of our children and loved ones who have strayed from the faith. Through the maternal intercession of Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth, we pray for our Holy Father, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, and Religious; grant them purity, wisdom, and pastoral zeal, and bless the Church with holy vocations. Inspired by the courage of Saints Timothy, Hippolytus, Symphorian, and Saint John Kemble, we lift up all persecuted Christians worldwide, give them steadfast faith, protection, and endurance in their trials. Lord, look with mercy upon the poor, the lonely, and the suffering; bring comfort, strength, and healing to the sick and dying, especially those battling cancer and chronic illnesses. Pour out Your peace and lasting love upon our marriages and families, and lead us all to eternal life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽
