Greetings and blessings, beloved family!
Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of Saint James, Apostle, alongside the Memorial of Saint Christopher, Martyr. Today’s liturgy challenges us to redefine true greatness through humble service and sacrificial love, recognizing that our human frailty is an earthen vessel that holds the surpassing power of God. This spirit of total dedication shines in Saint James, the “Son of Thunder” and inner-circle apostle who was the first of the Twelve to drink Christ’s chalice of martyrdom, as well as in Saint Christopher, who used his immense strength to carry travelers and Christ Himself across dangerous waters, ultimately laying down his life as a faithful martyr. May we embrace the way of the Cross today, carry Christ courageously into our world, and allow our tears of trial to yield a joyful harvest in the Kingdom of God.

Today’s Bible Readings for Feast of Saint James, Apostle | July 25, 2026
Reading 1: 2 Corinthians 4:7-15
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 126:1bc-2ab, 2cd-3, 4-5, 6
Gospel: Matthew 20:20-28
Gospel Reading ~ Matthew 20:20-28
“Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
“The mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something. He said to her, “What do you wish?” She answered him, “Command that these two sons of mine sit, one at your right and the other at your left, in your Kingdom.” Jesus said in reply, “You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?” They said to him, “We can.” He replied, “My chalice you will indeed drink, but to sit at my right and at my left, this is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” When the ten heard this, they became indignant at the two brothers. But Jesus summoned them and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and the great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave. Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.””
SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS
In today’s Gospel, on the Feast of Saint James, Apostle, we witness a striking moment of human ambition confronted and transformed by divine truth. The mother of James and John approaches Jesus, seeking places of honor and worldly prestige for her sons in His Kingdom. Recognizing their lack of understanding, Jesus poses a searching question: “Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?” Though James and John boldly claim they can, Jesus shifts their understanding of leadership away from earthly dominance and toward sacrificial love. He turns human power structures upside down, declaring that true greatness in the Kingdom of God is measured not by earthly status or authority, but by humble service and self-giving sacrifice, modeled perfectly by the Son of Man who gave His life as a ransom for many.
Saint James would indeed come to drink Christ’s chalice, becoming the very first of the Twelve Apostles to lay down his life as a martyr for the Gospel. This passage challenges us to examine our own motivations and desires within our spiritual, professional, and personal pursuits. Are we constantly striving for recognition, status, and control, or are we truly willing to embrace the servant’s path? Jesus calls us to a radical way of living where authority is exercised through washing feet, bearing burdens, and laying down our lives for others with quiet, selfless humility.
In the first reading, Saint Paul offers a deeply moving reflection on the nature of apostolic ministry and Christian suffering, reminding us that “we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us.” Paul describes the paradox of the Christian life: being afflicted but not constrained, perplexed but not driven to despair, persecuted but not abandoned, and struck down but not destroyed. Our human frailty and weakness serve as the precise canvas upon which the victorious, resurrected life of Jesus is made visible. Through every trial and sacrifice endured for the sake of Christ, God’s abundant grace flows outward to strengthen others and cause thanksgiving to overflow to His eternal glory.
The Responsorial Psalm beautifully captures the ultimate triumph of sacrificial endurance, joyfully proclaiming: “Those who sow in tears shall reap rejoicing.” The psalmist recalls God’s powerful acts of restoration, comparing the joy of the redeemed to a dream filled with laughter and song. It offers profound consolation to anyone currently enduring hardship, reminding us that the pain, tears, and faithful labors of today are never wasted in God’s eyes. Just as a farmer weeping while sowing seed ultimately returns rejoicing carrying abundant sheaves, those who faithfully walk the way of the Cross will surely share in the glory of the Lord’s harvest.
Reflecting on the Sacred Scriptures today, we are invited to audit our heart’s attitude toward service and trial. Are we trying to rely on our own strength and talents, forgetting that we are merely earthen vessels meant to display God’s power? Are we currently facing hardships or sacrifices that feel overwhelming, losing sight of the joyful harvest promised to those who persevere in faith? Today, let us ask Saint James to intercede for us, so that we may drink the cup of self-giving love with courage, serve others with genuine humility, and trust that our tears will yield eternal joy in Christ.
Lord Jesus, You came into the world not to be served, but to serve and give Your life as a ransom for many. Forgive us for the times we have sought prestige, self-exaltation, or comfort over humble service and self-sacrifice. Help us to embrace our frailty as earthen vessels, so that Your strength, life, and resurrection power may be clearly manifested through us. Grant us the courage to drink the cup of faithful service, to sow in tears when trials come, and to rejoice in the abundant harvest of Your grace. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT JAMES, APOSTLE: Saint James, known as the Greater to distinguish him from the other Apostle James, was the brother of Saint John the Evangelist and the son of Zebedee and Salome. He was a fisherman by trade until Jesus called him to become a fisher of men. Along with Peter and John, James formed part of Jesus’ inner circle, witnessing pivotal moments such as the Transfiguration and the Agony in the Garden. Christ gave James and John the nickname Boanerges“sons of thunder”for their zeal and fervent spirit.
After Pentecost, James is believed to have preached the Gospel in Spain. Upon returning to Jerusalem, he was arrested and became the first Apostle to be martyred, beheaded by the order of King Herod Agrippa around 44 AD. His relics are venerated in Santiago de Compostela in Spain, a major pilgrimage destination for centuries. His unwavering witness invites us to courageously live our faith, drink from the cup of Christ, and trust in the hope of eternal life.
PRAYER: O glorious Saint James, you left everything to follow Jesus and bore witness to Him even unto death. Pray for us, that we may be strong in our trials, firm in faith, and courageous in love. May your example help us walk the pilgrim path with joy and endurance. Amen. 🙏🏾
SAINT CHRISTOPHER, MARTYR: Saint Christopher is honored as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, a group of saints invoked during times of great need. Though little is historically certain about his life, tradition tells us he was a man of great strength who devoted himself to serving others. He is most remembered for carrying travelers across a dangerous river until one day, he bore a small Child who grew increasingly heavy with every step. That Child revealed Himself as Christ, saying, “You have borne not only the world, but the One who created it.” Hence his name, Christopher meaning “Christ-bearer.”
Christopher suffered martyrdom under the Roman emperor Decius in the 3rd century. He became a symbol of strength, protection, and faithful service. Though his official status was later revised in the Church’s calendar, he remains a powerful figure of devotion and is widely honored around the world, especially by travelers and those facing perilous journeys.
PRAYER: Almighty God, You gave Saint Christopher the strength to carry Christ and the courage to die for His name. Grant us safe travels, enduring faith, and the grace to carry Christ in our hearts wherever we go. Amen. 🙏🏾
HONORING THE SAINTS OF THE DAY:
As we draw deep inspiration today from the zealous apostolic courage and martyrdom of Saint James the Greater and the steadfast protective faith and service of Saint Christopher, we also turn our hearts to the rest of the holy assembly sharing this July 25th feast day. Today, we prayerfully honor and remember SAINT CUCUPHAS, SAINTS FLORENTIUS & FELIX, SAINT GLODESIND, SAINT MAGNERICUS, SAINT NISSEN, SAINT PAUL OF GAZA, SAINTS THEA & VALENTINA, AND SAINT THEODEMIR. Spanning across centuries, from brave early martyrs of the ancient Church to holy abbesses, dedicated bishops, and devout monastic monks, their diverse lives all beautifully reflect the multifaceted grace of God. Remembering them reminds us that we belong to an incredibly vast family of faith, encouraging us to follow their example and walk our own path toward holiness with confidence today.

PRAYER INTENTION: FAITHFUL SERVICE, SAFE JOURNEYS, AND HEALING
Heavenly Father, You are the God of all consolation who turns our sorrow into laughter and transforms our humble labors into an abundant spiritual harvest. As we fulfill our responsibilities, academic pursuits, and daily work today, grant us the grace to drink the chalice of selfless service and walk courageously as Christ-bearers in our world. Through the loving intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, Saint James the Apostle (Patron of Spain, pilgrims, laborers, and arthritis sufferers), and Saint Christopher (Patron of travelers, motorists, children, and those facing perils), we humbly bring our prayers to You. We pray for the safety and protection of all children, for widows, expectant mothers, those trusting You for the gift of children, and mothers in labor; we place in Your hands the sick and dying, especially those suffering from cancers, terminal diseases, arthritis, epilepsy, and dental ailments, begging for Your healing touch. Lord, provide for the poor, the needy, and all going through hardships, bestowing Your peace, love, and unity upon our families and our world. Guard the Universal Church, sustain our Pope and Clergy, protect persecuted Christians, and grant the grace of true conversion to sinners everywhere. May we walk as faithful pilgrims today, bearing witness to Your glory until we reach our heavenly home. Amen. 🙏🏽

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF JULY | MONTH OF THE MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS: July is dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ a profound devotion that honors the redeeming power of Christ’s Blood shed for our salvation. Flowing from His Sacred Heart, this Blood is the price of our redemption, the source of grace in the sacraments, and the seal of the New Covenant. It reminds us that salvation was not won lightly, but through the ultimate sacrifice of love. This month, the Church invites us to meditate on the infinite value of Christ’s Blood poured out during His Passion from Gethsemane to Calvary and in every celebration of the Holy Eucharist. We are called to offer acts of reparation for the sins of the world and to intercede for the conversion of souls. Devotions such as the Litany of the Precious Blood, the Chaplet of the Precious Blood, and daily consecration to the Precious Blood help deepen our union with Christ crucified.
As Saint John Chrysostom once said, “The Precious Blood is the salvation of souls; it purifies, sanctifies, and strengthens.” In our trials, let us take refuge beneath the cross, trusting in the Blood that speaks of mercy, victory, and eternal life.
“Precious Blood of Jesus, save us and the whole world.”
O Most Precious Blood of Jesus, fountain of salvation, we adore You. Wash us clean of sin, protect us from evil, and draw us into deeper love and union with You. Amen. 🙏🏽

We pray for the repose of the gentle souls of our loved ones and souls of all the faithful departed. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their gentle souls through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace with our Lord Jesus Christ… Amen 🙏🏽
Thanking God for His love and the gift of this glorious day, we offer Him a prayer of gratitude for the graces of the past months and entrust this month of July to His loving providence. We pray for God’s grace and mercy as we anchor ourselves in the steady, life-giving rhythm of Ordinary Time. May the profound mysteries of the Cross, the cleansing power of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, and the enduring fire of the Holy Spirit continue to help us seek You in every moment of our lives. May the peace, hope, and divine communion that flow from the Heart of our Redeemer shape our steps, inform our decisions, and strengthen our resolve to live each day in the light of Christ and the daily guidance of the Advocate. As we journey onward through the rest of this month, may God bless our families and loved ones, and may His light continue to shine brightly in every home. Let us draw closer to God and be renewed through the joy of the Gospel, the gifts of the Spirit, and generosity to the poor. May God keep us all safe and well during these challenging times. Wishing us all a spiritually enriching, most blessed, and grace-filled journey ahead. Amen. 🙏🏽
