Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, as we celebrate Saturday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time, the Church commemorates the Memorial of Saint Dominic, Priest, the Solemnity of Saint Mary MacKillop, Religious, along with Saints Cyriacus, Largus, Smaragdus, and Companions, Martyrs, and the Fourteen Holy Helpers. We also continue in prayer on Day 3 of the Novena to Our Lady of the Assumption and Day 7 of the Novena to Saint Philomena. In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds His disciples that faith the size of a mustard seed can move spiritual mountains and overcome what seems humanly impossible. This mountain-moving faith shines powerfully in today’s saints. Saint Dominic, armed with humility and the Holy Rosary given to him by Our Lady, founded the Order of Preachers to combat heresy and bring thousands back to Christ. Saint Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first canonized saint, trusted unreservedly in Divine Providence through trials and opposition to educate the poor and care for the marginalized. Alongside Saint Cyriacus and the Fourteen Holy Helpers, invoked for centuries as heavenly protectors in times of severe illness and trial, today’s reflections remind us that when we anchor our trust in God, no obstacle is insurmountable.

BIBLE READINGS FOR TODAY’S HOLY MASS:

Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time | USCCB | https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading

Today’s Bible Readings for Saturday, August 8, 2026 | Memorial of Saint Dominic, Priest
Reading 1: Habakkuk 1:12—2:4
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 9:8-9, 10-11, 12-13
Gospel: Matthew 17:14-20

Gospel Reading ~ Matthew 17:14-20

“He said to them, ‘Because of your little faith. Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’”

“A man came up to Jesus, knelt down before him, and said, ‘Lord, have pity on my son, who is a lunatic and suffers severely; often he falls into fire, and often into water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him.’ Jesus said in reply, ‘O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you? Bring the boy here to me.’ Jesus rebuked him and the demon came out of him, and from that hour the boy was cured. Then the disciples approached Jesus in private and said, ‘Why could we not drive it out?’ He said to them, ‘Because of your little faith. Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.'”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In today’s Gospel, a desperate father kneels before Jesus, pleading for his suffering son after the disciples were unable to heal him. When the disciples privately ask why they failed, Jesus identifies the root of the issue: “Because of your little faith.” He reassures them that faith is not measured by volume or human strength, but by its sincerity and reliance on God’s power. Even faith as small as a mustard seed can move spiritual mountains and accomplish what seems humanly impossible. When we try to fight spiritual battles or solve life’s deep crises through our own self-reliance, we stall; but when we anchor our small faith in our all-powerful God, His grace flows freely through us.

In the First Reading, the prophet Habakkuk pours out his honest struggle and complaint to God, asking why the Lord remains silent while evil seems to triumph over the innocent. Habakkuk stations himself on the rampart, faithfully watching and waiting for God’s reply. The Lord answers him with a powerful promise that divine justice will come in its appointed time: “If it delays, wait for it, it will surely come… the just man, because of his faith, shall live.” The Responsorial Psalm echoes this profound reassurance, singing, “You forsake not those who seek you, O Lord.” God is our stronghold in times of distress, and He never forgets the cry of the poor or the oppressed.

Together, these readings call us to patient, immovable trust in God when we face unanswered questions or daunting spiritual obstacles. Whether we are waiting on God’s timing like Habakkuk or confronting insurmountable obstacles like the disciples, the message is clear: God is faithful, and no situation is beyond His transformational touch. When you encounter overwhelming trials or spiritual mountains in your life, do you rely on human strength, or do you step forward with mountain-moving faith in God? May we always stand our watch in prayer, confident that even the smallest seed of genuine faith yields extraordinary grace.

Heavenly Father, You are our stronghold in times of distress and the source of all divine power. Forgive us for the moments when our faith wavers or when we try to carry heavy burdens in our own strength. Grant us even the simple, pure faith of a mustard seed, so that we may trust You to move every mountain of fear, sickness, and doubt in our lives. Help us to wait patiently on Your timing, knowing that You never forsake those who seek You. We place our lives, our families, and our struggles into Your loving and miraculous hands. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINTS OF THE DAY | AUGUST 8TH:

Direct link to the detailed history of Saint Dominic, Saint Mary MacKillop, Saints Cyriacus, Largus, Smaragdus, and Companions, and the Fourteen Holy Helpers | https://dailyreflectionswithphilomena.com/saints-of-the-day-feast-day-august-8th/

SAINT DOMINIC, PRIEST (1170–1221): Born in Spain to a noble family, Saint Dominic dedicated his life to defending the truth of the Catholic faith through prayer, study, and preaching. Seeing the devastating effects of heresy in France, he founded the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) to preach the Gospel and uplift souls. In a time of intense personal trial, Our Lady appeared to Saint Dominic and entrusted him with the devotion of the Holy Rosary as a powerful spiritual weapon to convert hearts and defeat error. Known for his profound humility, severe penances, and deep love for the poor, he spent his life burning with zeal for souls until his death in 1221. He is the patron saint of astronomers, scientists, and those falsely accused.

PRAYER: God, let Saint Dominic help Your Church by his merits and teaching. May he who was an outstanding preacher of truth become a most generous intercessor for us. Amen. 🙏🏽

SOLEMNITY OF SAINT MARY MACKILLOP, RELIGIOUS (1842–1909): Saint Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first native-born saint (Saint Mary of the Cross), devoted her life to serving the poor, the abandoned, and neglected children. Together with Father Julian Tenison Woods, she co-founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart (the Josephites), a religious order built on radical poverty, charity, and complete trust in Divine Providence. Despite facing severe financial hardship, misunderstandings, and unjust opposition from Church authorities—even enduring a temporary, mistaken excommunication—she remained steadfast in prayer and total charity, forgiving those who mistreated her. She died in 1909, leaving behind a thriving legacy of schools, orphanages, and shelters.

PRAYER: O God, source of all goodness, who have shown us in Saint Mary MacKillop a woman of faith living by the power of the Cross, teach us, we pray, by her example to live the Gospel in changing times and to respect and defend the human dignity of all. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINTS CYRIACUS, LARGUS, SMARAGDUS, AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS (d. 303 A.D.): Saint Cyriacus was a Roman deacon of noble birth who gave his entire wealth to the poor and ministered untiringly to imprisoned Christians during the brutal persecutions under Emperor Diocletian. Known for his deep prayer life and miraculous gifts, he performed acts of healing and deliverance that drew many to Christ. Refusing to renounce his faith or offer sacrifice to pagan gods, he was arrested, tortured, and beheaded along with his companions Largus, Smaragdus, and twenty others on the Via Salaria in Rome. Their fearless witness stands as a testament to the power of Christ’s love over fear and death.

PRAYER: Almighty God, who gave Saints Cyriacus, Largus, Smaragdus, and their companions the grace to lay down their lives for Your word, help us by their example to remain steadfast in faith and unwavering in our devotion to You. Amen. 🙏🏽

THE FOURTEEN HOLY HELPERS: The Fourteen Holy Helpers are a venerated group of early Christian saints—including St. Cyriacus, St. Blaise, St. Christopher, St. George, St. Pantaleon, and St. Catherine of Alexandria—whose joint intercession was invoked heavily during times of severe plague, disease, and peril in the 14th century. Each of these saints was known to offer powerful aid against specific trials, such as throat ailments, sudden death, headaches, and diabolical distress. Collectively honored on August 8th, they remain a source of great spiritual comfort, reminding the Church of the communion of saints and God’s constant protection in times of crisis.

PRAYER: Great princes of Heaven, Holy Helpers, who sacrificed all for God and now enjoy eternal glory: obtain for us the strength to bear patiently all trials, overcome temptation, and persevere in God’s service to the end. Amen. 🙏🏽

PRAYER INTENTION: FOR SCIENTISTS, THE FALSELY ACCUSED, NOVENA PETITIONS, AND THE SICK

Heavenly Father, You never forsake those who seek You, and You hear the cry of the poor and oppressed. As we pray through Day 3 of the Novena to Our Lady of the Assumption and Day 7 of the Novena to Saint Philomena, we place our trust in Your unfailing love. Through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother Mary, Saint Dominic, Saint Mary MacKillop, Saints Cyriacus, Largus, Smaragdus, Saint Philomena, and the Fourteen Holy Helpers, we bring our prayers before You today.

We humbly pray for all scientists, astronomers, and researchers, that their work may always reflect Your truth. We pray for all who are falsely accused or unjustly suffering, asking that Your justice and vindication be made clear. Lord, look with mercy upon the poor, the needy, the sick, and the dying, especially those suffering from cancer, terminal diseases, and sudden afflictions; touch them with Your healing power. Grant strength to all job seekers and families in economic distress. We pray for our Holy Father, the clergy, for an abundance of vocations to the priesthood and religious life, for persecuted Christians around the world, for the conversion of sinners, and for deep peace, love, and unity within our families and across our world. Amen. 🙏🏽

Save Us, Savior of the World. Our Blessed Mother Mary, Saint Dominic, Saint Mary MacKillop, Saints Cyriacus, Largus, Smaragdus, and Companions, and the Fourteen Holy Helpers, and all the Saints we celebrate today ~ Pray for us. 🙏🏽
