“Even to your old age I am He, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.” ~ Isaiah 46:4

Happy World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly! ππΎ
To all grandparents and elderly loved ones today, we honor and celebrate you. We thank God for the precious gift of grandparents and the elderly whose love, guidance, sacrifices, and dedication enrich our families and communities. We look to Sts. Joachim and Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandparents of Jesus, as a model of humble service, steadfast faith, and unwavering trust in God.
We offer all grandparents, living and deceased, to God in prayer and thanksgiving. Thank you for your enduring love, your prayers that uphold families, and the wisdom you pass on with gentle strength. Your lives are a gift to the Church and the world, a living testimony of faith, hope, and perseverance. May God bless you abundantly with peace, health, and joy. May you feel the love of your family, the embrace of the Church, and the presence of Christ, who walks with you always. We cherish you. We need you. We love you.ππ½ποΈπΉβ€οΈπΉ
ποΈ PRAYER FOR THE WORLD DAY FOR GRANDPARENTS AND THE ELDERLY ποΈ
Heavenly Father, We thank You for the precious gift of our grandparents and all elderly people. We are grateful for their lives, their wisdom, their unwavering faith, and the countless sacrifices they have made for their families, the Church, and society.
Lord Jesus, You welcomed the young and honored the old. Bless our grandparents and the elderly with good health of mind and body, peace of heart, renewed strength, and the joy of Your loving presence. Comfort those who are lonely, sick, grieving, or forgotten, and remind them that they are deeply loved by You and cherished by Your Church.
Holy Spirit, inspire us to cherish, respect, and care for our elders with compassion, patience, and gratitude. Help us to listen to their stories, learn from their wisdom, and honor them through our love, kindness, and service.
Through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saints Joachim and Anne – the grandparents of Jesus and the patrons of grandparents – may our families grow in faith, hope, and love. May every generation walk together, bearing witness to the Gospel and proclaiming Your goodness to the world.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amenππ½

ποΈA BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WORLD DAY FOR GRANDPARENTS AND THE ELDERLY ποΈ
The World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly was established by Pope Francis in 2021 to honor grandparents and older adults, recognizing their invaluable role in families, the Church, and society.
The celebration is observed annually on the fourth Sunday of July, close to the liturgical Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne on July 26, who are venerated as the grandparents of Jesus. Pope Francis intentionally chose this time to emphasize the important vocation of grandparents and the elderly as witnesses of faith and bridges between generations.
Because it is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July, the exact date changes each year. For example:
- 2024: July 28
- 2025: July 27
- 2026: July 26
In the United States, some dioceses celebrate or observe this occasion in conjunction with National Grandparents Day, which falls on the first Sunday after Labor Day. However, the Vatican’s official observance remains the fourth Sunday of July.
Through this annual celebration, the Church encourages families and communities to honor, cherish, and care for grandparents and the elderly, recognizing them as treasured bearers of wisdom, faith, and hope for future generations.
Blessings and Love,
Dr. Philomena Ikowe and Family ππ½π
