Saturday, June 6, 2026 — Pope Leo XIV officially began a seven-day apostolic trip to Spain, marking his first major European tour since becoming Pontiff and ending a 15-year wait for a papal visit to the country.

This ambitious journey will span four distinct regions, featuring 22 talks and homilies alongside major public liturgies. The itinerary is as follows:

• Madrid (June 6–9)
• Barcelona (June 9–11)
• Gran Canaria (June 11)
• Tenerife (June 12)

The journey began on June 6 in Madrid, where the Holy Father was received by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia at the Royal Palace, before spending his first afternoon focusing on his “Church of the Poor” vision by visiting a Cáritas homeless shelter. On Sunday, June 7, the Pope presided over a massive open-air Corpus Christi Mass and Eucharistic procession at the Plaza de Cibeles. Monday, June 8, brought a highly anticipated political and pastoral focus as Pope Leo XIV became the first Pope in history to address a joint session of the Spanish Parliament, calling for unity against national polarization, before praying at the Almudena Cathedral and leading a vibrant diocesan gathering of thousands at the newly renovated Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. On Tuesday, June 9, after thanking 10,000 local volunteers in Madrid, the Holy Father arrived in Barcelona to pray with local clergy at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and lead a massive youth prayer vigil at the Olympic Stadium.

On Wednesday, June 10, the Pope celebrated a historic milestone by presiding over a centenary Mass at the Sagrada Família, where he officially dedicated and blessed the newly completed 564-foot Tower of Jesus Christ on the exact 100th anniversary of architect Antoni Gaudí’s death. Following his powerful time in Catalonia, the Holy Father spent June 11 and 12 in the Canary Islands, fulfilling a deep humanitarian wish of the late Pope Francis. Visiting both Gran Canaria and Tenerife, he met directly with West African migrants and local frontline organizations along one of Europe’s most dangerous Atlantic migration routes, delivering an urgent message of global solidarity, human dignity, and human rights before boarding the papal plane back to Rome on Friday evening.
