HOLY MASS AND PROCESSION PRESIDED OVER BY POPE LEO XIV AT  THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF THE LAKE (ON THE FEAST OF OUR LADY  OF THE LAKE) | LIVE FROM CASTEL GANDOLFO | AUGUST 29, 2026|

The devotion to Our Lady of the Lake at Castel Gandolfo, Italy, began in 1954, during the Marian Year proclaimed by Pope Pius XII, through the initiative of the parish priest, Don Dino Sella, who sought to unite the faithful living and working around Lake Albano in devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Pope St. Paul VI later supported the construction of a church dedicated to Maria Santissima del Lago on the shores of Lake Albano and personally celebrated Holy Mass there on August 15, 1977, the Solemnity of the Assumption. Pope St. John Paul II subsequently visited the church and celebrated Holy Mass there in 1979.

The local devotion continues through prayer, Holy Mass, and the traditional Marian procession on Lake Albano. On August 29, 2026, Pope Leo XIV joins the celebration and becomes the first Pope to participate in the portion of the Marian procession conducted by boat upon the waters of Lake Albano.

PATRONAGE & DEVOTION

Our Lady of the Lake is especially invoked by the faithful of Castel Gandolfo and the communities surrounding Lake Albano. Through this beautiful local Marian devotion, the faithful entrust to the Blessed Virgin Mary families, communities, those who live and work around the lake, and all who journey upon its waters, asking for her maternal protection and intercession.

Note: these are devotional associations with the local tradition rather than an officially defined universal patronage of the Catholic Church.

PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF THE LAKE

O Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Lake, loving Mother of Jesus and our Mother, we come before you with hearts filled with faith and trust.

As you watch over the peaceful waters of Lake Albano, spread your maternal mantle over us, our families, our homes, and our communities. Protect all who journey upon the waters and accompany us through the changing currents of life.

Intercede for us before your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Obtain for us the grace to remain steadfast in faith, strong in hope, and generous in love. In times of uncertainty, calm our hearts; in times of difficulty, strengthen us; and in moments of joy, teach us always to give thanks to God.

May our lives, like peaceful waters reflecting the heavens, reflect the love, mercy, and goodness of God. Lead us safely across the waters of this earthly pilgrimage until we reach the eternal harbor of Heaven.

PRAYER INTENTION: FOR MARY’S MATERNAL PROTECTION, FAMILIES, UNITY, AND GUIDANCE

Heavenly Father, through the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Lake, we entrust to You all who seek her protection and guidance. May Mary, who always leads us to her Son, Jesus, accompany families, strengthen communities, and bring peace and unity to all who call upon her name.

Lord, bless the people of Castel Gandolfo and all the communities surrounding Lake Albano. Watch over those who work and travel upon its waters, and protect them from every danger. In the storms and uncertainties of life, may Our Lady of the Lake teach us to trust in Your providence and to keep our hearts anchored in Christ.

Through Mary’s loving intercession, comfort those who are suffering, strengthen those who are weary, guide those who are searching, and draw sinners back to Your mercy. May our devotion to Our Lady never end with Mary, but always lead us more deeply to Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

May Our Lady of the Lake pray for us, protect us, and lead us ever closer to her Son. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽💙
