Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, the Church honors the Memorial of Saints John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, Priests, and Companions, Martyrs, alongside Saint Peter of Alcántara and Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko. These holy men surrendered all earthly comfort, security, and human recognition to lay down their lives for the Gospel. From the French Jesuits who brought the light of Christ to the native peoples of North America through immense suffering, to Saint Peter of Alcántara’s radical penitential poverty, and Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko’s courageous, non-violent stand for truth and human dignity in Communist Poland, these witnesses knew that human life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. Their heroic sacrifice resonates powerfully with today’s Gospel, where Jesus warns against greed and the folly of storing up temporary wealth, urging us instead to become truly “rich in what matters to God.”

🙏🏽 A PRAYER FOR OUR HOLY FATHER, POPE LEO XIV 🙏🏽🤍

According to the Vatican News Pope Leo XIV has officially been discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital and has returned safely to the Vatican, recovering well ahead of initial schedules following his lung surgery. We give thanks for his successful discharge and continue to hold Pope Leo XIV in our prayers for his complete healing, restored strength, and continued good health. Amen 🙏🏾.

BIBLE READINGS FOR TODAY’S HOLY MASS:

Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time | USCCB | https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading

Today’s Bible Readings: Memorial of Saints John de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues, Priests, and Companions, Martyrs | Monday, October 19, 2026
Reading 1:
Ephesians 2:1-10
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 100:1b-2, 3, 4ab, 4c-5
Gospel: Luke 12:13-21

Gospel Reading ~ Luke 12:13-21

“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”

“Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.’ He replied to him, ‘Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?’ Then he said to the crowd, ‘Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.’ Then he told them a parable. ‘There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, “What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?” And he said, “This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, ‘Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!'” But God said to him, “You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?” Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.'”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

Today’s readings challenge us to reorient our hearts away from fleeting earthly security and toward the eternal, immeasurable riches of God’s grace. In the Gospel, when a man asks Jesus to arbitrate a family inheritance dispute, the Lord uses the moment to warn against all forms of greed and materialism. He tells the parable of the rich fool who, blessed with a bountiful harvest, thought only of building bigger barns to store his wealth for self-indulgent ease, completely ignoring his mortality and his soul. Jesus exposes the tragic folly of placing our security in earthly possessions rather than becoming “rich in what matters to God.”

This profound call to store up heavenly treasure is illuminated in the First Reading. Saint Paul reminds the Ephesians that we were once spiritually dead in our sins, but God, who is rich in mercy, brought us to life in Christ by pure grace. Salvation is not a human achievement or something bought with worldly wealth, but a free gift of divine love: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God.” We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to walk in good works. As the Responsorial Psalm joyfully proclaims: “The LORD made us, we belong to him… Enter his gates with thanksgiving, his courts with praise.”

Today, let us examine where we are storing our treasure and placing our trust. Are we consumed by collecting material goods and temporary comforts, or are we investing our lives in faith, generosity, and love for God? How can you grow “rich in what matters to God” today through an act of selfless generosity or spiritual devotion?

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your rich mercy and for saving us by Grace through faith in Christ Jesus. Forgive us for the times we have been consumed by greed, material anxieties, or the false security of worldly possessions. Cleanse our hearts of selfishness, and teach us to use our blessings to serve others and glorify Your name. Help us to recognize that our lives belong to You, so that we may store up eternal treasures and walk in the good works You have prepared for us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINTS OF THE DAY | OCTOBER 19TH:

SAINTS JOHN (JEAN) DE BRÉBEUF, ISAAC JOGUES, PRIESTS AND MARTYRS, AND THEIR COMPANIONS, MARTYRS: The North American Martyrs—six French Jesuit priests and two lay missionaries—offered their lives to proclaim Christ among the Huron and Iroquois peoples of Canada and New York. They endured unspeakable hardship, torture, and death, yet their love for Christ never wavered. Among them, Saint Isaac Jogues (1607–1646) stands out as the “Apostle of the Mohawks.” Mutilated during captivity, he received papal permission to celebrate Mass with his injured hands—an enduring symbol of missionary perseverance. These martyrs bore witness to the Gospel’s power through sacrifice, and their blood became the seed of the Church in North America. Canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1930, they remain shining models of courage and evangelization.

PRAYER: O God, who consecrated the first fruits of faith in North America through the preaching and martyrdom of Saints John, Isaac, and their companions, grant that through their intercession, Your Church may continue to grow in holiness and missionary zeal. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT PETER OF ALCANTARA, PRIEST (1499–1562): A Spanish Franciscan reformer, Saint Peter of Alcantara was a man of extraordinary penance, prayer, and humility. Born into nobility, he renounced luxury to live a life of austere devotion. He became a close friend and spiritual director to Saint Teresa of Ávila, supporting her Carmelite reform. Known for his mysticism and wisdom, he practiced severe self-discipline and inspired others toward holiness. His reforms renewed Franciscan life, emphasizing poverty and contemplative prayer. He died in deep communion with God at Arenas de San Pedro, Spain. Canonized in 1669 by Pope Clement IX, Saint Peter of Alcantara is venerated as a model of spiritual endurance and reforming zeal.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, through the humble and holy life of Saint Peter of Alcantara, You revealed the beauty of repentance and prayer. Help us to reform our hearts before seeking to reform the world. Amen. 🙏🏾

BLESSED JERZY (George) POPIEŁUSZKO, PRIEST (1947–1984): Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko was a courageous Polish priest who defended faith and truth during Communist oppression. As chaplain to the Solidarity Movement, he preached non-violence and the moral power of truth, reminding the faithful that “truth never changes—it is the path to freedom.” His homilies inspired a nation but drew the ire of Communist authorities, who brutally murdered him on October 19, 1984. Beatified in 2010, Blessed Jerzy remains a powerful intercessor for those who face injustice, oppression, and moral corruption. His life reminds us that fidelity to Christ often requires courage in the face of worldly power.

PRAYER: O God of truth and freedom, You gave Blessed Jerzy Popiełuszko courage to proclaim justice and peace in times of darkness. Grant that we may speak the truth in love and remain steadfast in conscience even when it costs us dearly. Amen. 🙏🏾

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF OCTOBER | MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY: October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary, a powerful prayer that draws us into the heart of the Gospel through the eyes of Mary. The Rosary is more than repetition, it is a meditation on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, united with the loving presence of His Blessed Mother. As Pope St. John Paul II reminded us, the Rosary is “a compendium of the Gospel,” helping us to contemplate Christ’s face with Mary.

The twenty mysteries of the Rosary, Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous, invite us to journey with Christ from His Incarnation to His Passion and His triumph over death. Each mystery opens us to God’s saving love, strengthens our faith, and leads us to imitate the virtues of Jesus and Mary in our daily lives. This month, the Church invites us to renew our devotion to the Rosary by praying it daily, whether alone, in families, or in community. Through it, we find peace in times of trial, strength against temptation, and deeper trust in God’s providence. Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, intercedes for us and leads us always to her Son.

“O Mary, our Blessed Mother and Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, teach us to pray with a pure heart and a steadfast spirit. As we meditate on the mysteries of Christ, help us to grow in faith, hope, and love. Intercede for us before your Son, that our families, our Church, and our world may be filled with peace and the light of the Gospel. Amen.” 🙏🏽
