Greetings and blessings, beloved family!
Today, the Church celebrates the Monday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time, together with the Memorial of Saint Celestine I, Pope, Saints Nathalia, Aurelius, Liliosa, Felix, and George, Martyrs of Córdoba, and Saint Pantaleon of Nicomedia, Physician and Martyr. Today’s liturgy calls us to cling closely to the Lord as a garment clings to a body, warning us against the spiritual decay of pride and self-sufficiency while assuring us that God’s grace works quietly, like a tiny mustard seed or hidden leaven, to bring about total transformation. This total fidelity shines brightly in today’s saints, in Pope Saint Celestine I, who defended orthodox doctrine and sent missionaries to Ireland; in Saints Nathalia, Aurelius, Liliosa, Felix, and George, who courageously laid down their lives for Christ in Córdoba; and in Saint Pantaleon, the “all-compassionate” fee-less physician who served the poor and endured martyrdom with forgiveness on his lips. May we guard against the decay of sin today and allow God’s quiet grace to leaven our hearts and lives.

Today’s Bible Readings for Monday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time | July 27, 2026
Reading 1: Jeremiah 13:1-11
Responsorial Psalm: Deuteronomy 32:18-19, 20, 21
Gospel: Matthew 13:31-35
Gospel Reading ~ Matthew 13:31-35
“The Kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants.”
“Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds. “The Kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.’” He spoke to them another parable. “The Kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.” All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables, to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world.”
SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS
In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers two concise yet profoundly encouraging parables regarding the nature and growth of the Kingdom of Heaven: the Mustard Seed and the Leaven. Through these images, Christ reveals that God’s reign does not enter the world with overwhelming force, flashiness, or immediate worldly triumph. Instead, like a tiny mustard seed hidden in the soil or a pinch of yeast buried within three measures of flour, God’s grace operates quietly, imperceptibly, and organically. Yet, despite its seemingly insignificant beginnings, this divine life possesses an unstoppable, transformative power. The small seed expands into a flourishing tree providing refuge for all, and the hidden yeast completely permeates and lifts the entire mass of dough, demonstrating that small acts of faith and hidden surrender carry immense eternal weight.
These parables offer deep reassurance for our daily lives, especially when our spiritual efforts, work, or prayers feel small and inconsequential. We often fall into the trap of measuring value by immediate, visible results, becoming discouraged when progress seems slow or hidden. Jesus reminds us that God delights in small beginnings. When we faithfully offer Him our small acts of charity, daily prayers, and honest labor, He takes those tiny seeds and works quietly beneath the surface to bring forth a rich, life-giving harvest that impacts everything around us.
In the First Reading, the prophet Jeremiah delivers a striking and sobering object lesson using a spoiled linen loincloth. God commands Jeremiah to wear a new linen loincloth, representing the close, intimate relationship God intended for Israel and Judah, a people meant to cling to Him like a garment for His praise, renown, and beauty. However, after hiding the loincloth in a rock by the river Parath for a long interval, Jeremiah retrieves it only to find it rotted and good for nothing. This vivid imagery serves as a stern warning against pride, stubbornness, and chasing false idols. When God’s people sever their close bond with Him to follow foreign gods or self-reliance, they lose their divine purpose and decay from within.
The Responsorial Psalm from Deuteronomy powerfully echoes this tragic reality of spiritual forgetfulness, mournfully declaring: “You have forgotten God who gave you birth.” The psalmist laments how the people became unmindful of their Rock and Creator, provoking the Lord to anger through their devotion to useless, “no-god” idols. It reminds us that spiritual decline rarely happens overnight; it begins quietly when we gradually stop clinging to God, forget His past deliverances, and allow worldly pride or distractions to replace our devotion to Him.
Reflecting on the Sacred Scriptures today, we are invited to audit our closeness to the Lord and our patience with His timing. Have you allowed pride, self-sufficiency, or worldly distractions to loosen your grip on God, risking the decay of your spiritual life like Jeremiah’s loincloth? Are you feeling discouraged because your current prayers, studies, or personal efforts seem small and fruitless? Today, let us renew our commitment to cling tightly to the Lord, trusting that the small mustard seeds of faith we sow today are quietly being transformed by His grace into something beautiful and enduring.
Lord Jesus, You teach us that Your Kingdom grows through quiet, faithful grace that transforms from within. Forgive us for the times we have allowed pride or worldly distractions to detach us from You, and for the moments we have despaired over small beginnings. Grant us the grace to cling to You as closely as a garment, so that our lives may be Your praise and beauty. Take the small seeds of our daily efforts, prayers, and sacrifices, and leaven our hearts, families, and works with Your Holy Spirit for Your eternal glory. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT CELESTINE I, POPE (D. 432): A Roman deacon and close associate of St. Ambrose, Pope Saint Celestine I led the Church during a turbulent era of heresy and political collapse. He vigorously defended the faith against Nestorianism, which denied the divine maternity of Mary, and Pelagianism, which downplayed the need for divine grace. Celestine sent missionaries like St. Palladius and St. Patrick to evangelize Ireland, and he empowered St. Cyril of Alexandria at the Council of Ephesus (431) to defend the title of Mary as Theotokos. Amid barbarian invasions, he worked to restore destroyed churches and developed the use of nuncios (papal ambassadors). He also introduced the Responsorial Psalm to the Roman liturgy.
PRAYER: O God, who guided Pope Saint Celestine to defend true doctrine and send missionaries to spread the Gospel, grant us courage to remain faithful amid confusion and to bear witness to Christ with clarity and love. Amen. 🙏🏾
SAINTS NATHALIA, AURELIUS, LILIOSA, FELIX, AND GEORGE, MARTYRS (D. 852): These heroic martyrs of Córdoba, Spain died under Islamic persecution for refusing to renounce Christ. Aurelius and Nathalia, born of Muslim fathers and Christian mothers, secretly embraced the Christian faith and eventually lived it openly. Their courage inspired Felix (Aurelius’s cousin, a former Muslim), and his wife Liliosa, to do the same. They were arrested for apostasy and martyred after refusing to deny Christ. A monk named George, a foreigner who spoke against Islam, chose martyrdom over exemption. Together, these saints shine as lights of fidelity in the face of deadly pressure.
PRAYER: Almighty God, who strengthened Saints Nathalia, Aurelius, Liliosa, Felix, and George to witness to Christ even unto death, grant us the grace to stand firm in our faith and to be faithful even in trials. Amen. 🙏🏾
SAINT PANTALEON OF NICOMEDIA, PHYSICIAN AND MARTYR (C. 275–305): Once a physician to Emperor Maximian, Pantaleon drifted from his Christian upbringing until a holy priest, Hermolaus, rekindled his faith. After his reconversion, Pantaleon gave away his wealth and healed the sick without charge, earning the name “the all-compassionate.” Refusing to renounce Christ during the Diocletian persecution, he performed a healing miracle before being brutally tortured. Miraculous events marked his attempted executions, until he surrendered himself to martyrdom, praying for his persecutors. Widely venerated as a Wonder-Worker and one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, he is a powerful intercessor for the sick, physicians, and those facing persecution or loneliness.
PRAYER: O merciful Lord, who glorified Your servant Pantaleon with healing gifts and unwavering courage, grant that we may serve others with compassion and witness to Your love without fear. Amen. 🙏🏾
HONORING THE SAINTS OF THE DAY:
As we draw deep inspiration today from the steadfast, defending leadership of Saint Celestine, the unbreakable marital unity and courageous witness of Saints Nathalia, Aurelius, Liliosa, Felix, and George, and the compassionate, miraculous healing ministry of Saint Pantaleon of Nicomedia, we also turn our hearts to the rest of the holy assembly sharing this July 27th feast day. Today, we prayerfully honor and remember SAINT ANTHUSA, SAINT CONSTANTINE, SAINT DIONYSIUS, SAINT ECCLESIUS, SAINT ETHERIUS, SAINT HERMOLAUS, SAINT JOHN SERAPION, SAINT MALCHUS, SAINT MARTINIAN, SAINT MAURUS, SAINT MAXIMIAN, BLESSED RUDOLF ACQUAVIVA, SAINT THEOBALD OF MARLY, AND BLESSED TITUS BRANDSMA. Spanning across centuries, from early Christian hermits and ancient martyrs of the East to holy monastic abbots, brave Jesuit missionaries, and courageous modern martyrs for truth, their diverse lives all beautifully reflect the multifaceted grace of God. Remembering them reminds us that we belong to an incredibly vast family of faith, encouraging us to follow their example and walk our own path toward holiness with confidence today.
Our Blessed Mother Mary, Saint Celestine, Saints Nathalia, Aurelius, Liliosa, Felix, and George, Saint Pantaleon of Nicomedia, and all the Saints we celebrate today ~ Pray for us. 🙏🏽
PRAYER INTENTION: DIVINE HEALING, STEADFAST FAITH, AND HEALTHCARE WORKERS
Heavenly Father, You are the compassionate God who gives us birth through the word of truth and transforms our small acts of faith into a rich, life-giving harvest. As we go about our work, studies, and daily trials today, grant us the grace to cling tightly to You and never forget Your unfailing love. Through the loving intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, Pope Saint Celestine I (Defender of the Faith and patron of missions), Saints Nathalia, Aurelius, Liliosa, Felix, and George (Patrons against persecution and for steadfast courage), and Saint Pantaleon of Nicomedia (Patron of physicians, doctors, midwives, torture victims, and protection against bodily ailments), we humbly present our intentions to You. We pray for all physicians, nurses, and healthcare workers; for widows, expectant mothers, those trusting You for the fruit of the womb, and women in labor; and we place in Your hands the sick and dying, especially those suffering from cancers, terminal illnesses, tuberculosis, and chronic pain, begging for Your healing touch. Lord, provide for the poor, the needy, and all facing hardship, bestowing Your peace, love, and unity upon our families and our world. Protect the Universal Church, sustain our Pope and Clergy, shield persecuted Christians, and grant the grace of true conversion to sinners everywhere. May we stand firm in our faith and serve others with Your divine compassion today. Amen. 🙏🏽

THE POPE’S MONTHLY INTENTIONS FOR 2026: FOR THE MONTH OF JULY: For respect for human life. Let us pray for the respect and protection of human life in all its stages, recognizing it as a gift from God.

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF JULY | MONTH OF THE MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS: July is dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ a profound devotion that honors the redeeming power of Christ’s Blood shed for our salvation. Flowing from His Sacred Heart, this Blood is the price of our redemption, the source of grace in the sacraments, and the seal of the New Covenant. It reminds us that salvation was not won lightly, but through the ultimate sacrifice of love. This month, the Church invites us to meditate on the infinite value of Christ’s Blood poured out during His Passion from Gethsemane to Calvary and in every celebration of the Holy Eucharist. We are called to offer acts of reparation for the sins of the world and to intercede for the conversion of souls. Devotions such as the Litany of the Precious Blood, the Chaplet of the Precious Blood, and daily consecration to the Precious Blood help deepen our union with Christ crucified.
As Saint John Chrysostom once said, “The Precious Blood is the salvation of souls; it purifies, sanctifies, and strengthens.” In our trials, let us take refuge beneath the cross, trusting in the Blood that speaks of mercy, victory, and eternal life.
“Precious Blood of Jesus, save us and the whole world.”
O Most Precious Blood of Jesus, fountain of salvation, we adore You. Wash us clean of sin, protect us from evil, and draw us into deeper love and union with You. Amen. 🙏🏽

PRAYER FOR THE DEAD
We pray for the repose of the gentle souls of our loved ones and souls of all the faithful departed. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their gentle souls through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace with our Lord Jesus Christ… Amen 🙏🏽
Thanking God for His love and the gift of this glorious day, we offer Him a prayer of gratitude for the graces of the past months and entrust this month of July to His loving providence. We pray for God’s grace and mercy as we anchor ourselves in the steady, life-giving rhythm of Ordinary Time. May the profound mysteries of the Cross, the cleansing power of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, and the enduring fire of the Holy Spirit continue to help us seek You in every moment of our lives. May the peace, hope, and divine communion that flow from the Heart of our Redeemer shape our steps, inform our decisions, and strengthen our resolve to live each day in the light of Christ and the daily guidance of the Advocate. As we journey onward through the rest of this month, may God bless our families and loved ones, and may His light continue to shine brightly in every home. Let us draw closer to God and be renewed through the joy of the Gospel, the gifts of the Spirit, and generosity to the poor. May God keep us all safe and well during these challenging times. Wishing us all a spiritually enriching, most blessed, and grace-filled journey ahead. Amen. 🙏🏽
