Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, on this rich feast day celebrating Saint John Henry Newman, Saint Denis and Companions, Saint John Leonardi, Saint Louis Bertrand, and Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, the Church honors a magnificent assembly of scholars, missionaries, pastors, and martyrs who boldly defended the faith and proclaimed Christ to the nations. From Saint John Henry Newman, the brilliant intellectual who championed the truth of the Catholic Church, to Saint Denis and Saint Dionysius carrying the Gospel to France and Athens, and Saint John Leonardi and Saint Louis Bertrand pouring out their lives for the sick, the poor, and the conversion of souls, these holy figures remind us of the unshakeable power of grace. As today’s Gospel calls us to stand firmly with Christ, recognizing that He who is stronger has overcome the darkness, let us look to the intercession of these great saints to guide our steps in truth and holiness today.

BIBLE READINGS FOR TODAY’S HOLY MASS:

Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time | USCCB | https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading

Today’s Bible Readings: Friday of the Twenty-seventh Week in Ordinary Time | Friday, October 9, 2026
Reading 1:
Galatians 3:7-14
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 111:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6
Gospel: Luke 11:15-26

Gospel Reading ~ Luke 11:15-26

“If it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you.”

“When Jesus had driven out a demon, some of the crowd said: “By the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.” Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven. But he knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house. And if Satan is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that it is by Beelzebul that I drive out demons. If I, then, drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own people drive them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the finger of God that I drive out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe. But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him, he takes away the armor on which he relied and distributes the spoils. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. “When an unclean spirit goes out of someone, it roams through arid regions searching for rest but, finding none, it says, ‘I shall return to my home from which I came.’ But upon returning, it finds it swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and brings back seven other spirits more wicked than itself who move in and dwell there, and the last condition of that man is worse than the first.”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

Today’s readings invite us to examine where our true allegiance lies, contrasting the freedom of living by faith with the danger of spiritual complacency and division. In the Gospel, after Jesus drives out a demon, His critics maliciously attribute His divine power to Beelzebul, the prince of demons, or demand a sign to test Him. Jesus cuts through their skepticism with profound clarity, revealing that Satan’s kingdom cannot stand against itself and declaring that He works by “the finger of God,” proving that the Kingdom of God has arrived. He warns us that spiritual neutrality is a myth: when an unclean spirit is cast out, the soul cannot remain empty and swept clean; it must be actively filled with grace and fidelity to Christ, or risk falling into a worse condition.

This vital transition from legalistic bondage to living faith is powerfully echoed in the First Reading. Saint Paul reminds the Galatians that those who have faith are the true children of Abraham, blessed through grace rather than the curse of trying to earn salvation through the works of the law. Christ ransomed us by becoming a curse for us, so that the blessing might extend to all nations and we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. Grounded in this wondrous redemption, the Responsorial Psalm joyfully proclaims: “The Lord will remember his covenant for ever… Gracious and merciful is the Lord. He has given food to those who fear him; he will forever be mindful of his covenant.”

Today, let us examine our own hearts. Are we actively dwelling in the grace of Christ, or have we left our souls vacant and vulnerable to worldly distractions? How can you intentionally fill your heart and daily routine with God’s grace and truth today, standing firmly with Christ?

Heavenly Father, we thank You for remembering Your covenant forever and for sending Your Son to ransom us from the curse of sin. Forgive us for the times our hearts have grown lukewarm, leaving us vulnerable to division and spiritual wandering. Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us, that we may be firmly rooted in faith, completely aligned with Christ, and active participants in gathering souls into Your Kingdom. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINTS OF THE DAY | OCTOBER 9TH:

Direct link to the detailed history of Saint John Henry Newman, Saint Denis and Companions, Saint John Leonardi, Saint Louis Bertrand, and Saint Dionysius the Areopagite | https://dailyreflectionswithphilomena.com/saints-of-the-day-feast-day-october-9th/

SAINT JOHN HENRY NEWMAN, CARDINAL: Saint John Henry Newman (1801–1890) was an English theologian, philosopher, and convert whose deep faith and intellect bridged the worlds of Anglicanism and Catholicism. A leading voice in the Oxford Movement, he sought to recover the ancient roots of Christian faith within England. After a profound personal and theological journey, he entered the Catholic Church in 1845 and was later ordained a priest and made a cardinal. Newman’s writings on conscience, faith, and education shaped modern Catholic thought and influenced the Second Vatican Council. His humility, scholarship, and devotion continue to inspire those who seek truth with both heart and reason.

PRAYER: Lord, grant that through the intercession of Saint John Henry Newman, we may seek Your truth with courage and follow it with steadfast love. May our faith be both intelligent and humble, our hearts aflame with Your wisdom. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT DENIS, BISHOP, AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS: Saint Denis, sent from Italy to Gaul in the third century, became the first Bishop of Paris and one of the greatest evangelizers of France. With his companions Rusticus and Eleutherius, he preached Christ with such zeal that they were arrested and martyred by beheading. Their courage made Paris a cradle of faith. From their martyrdom rose the Abbey of Saint-Denis, later the burial place of French kings. Denis is honored as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, invoked against plague and spiritual afflictions.

PRAYER: Almighty God, You sent St. Denis and his Companions to proclaim Your glory to the nations and strengthened them with the virtue of constancy in their passion to bear witness to the Gospel even unto death. Grant us steadfast courage to profess Your name in word and deed and help us, after their example, to despite worldly prosperity and adversity. Amen 🙏🏽

SAINT JOHN LEONARDI, PRIEST: Saint John Leonardi (1541–1609) was an Italian priest who founded the Clerks Regular of the Mother of God in Lucca, Italy. Originally trained as a pharmacist, he turned his healing hands toward souls, reforming the Church through catechesis, missionary zeal, and pastoral care. He co-founded what became the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, shaping the Church’s missionary outreach. His deep love for Christ inspired countless conversions, and his care for the sick during a plague ultimately cost him his life.

PRAYER: Lord, through the intercession of Saint John Leonardi, enkindle in us a missionary spirit that brings Your truth and love to all people. May we be faithful healers of both body and soul. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT LOUIS BERTRAND, PRIEST: Saint Louis Bertrand (1526–1581), a Dominican friar from Spain, devoted his life to preaching the Gospel with purity and zeal. Known as the “Apostle of the Americas,” he evangelized in South America, converting many Indigenous peoples and working miracles through God’s grace. His humility, simplicity, and compassion reflected Christ’s love for the poor and forgotten.

PRAYER: Merciful Lord, through the intercession of Saint Louis Bertrand, fill us with apostolic fervor and love for Your people. May we bear witness to Your mercy through our words and actions. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT DIONYSIUS THE AREOPAGITE, BISHOP, AND MARTYR: Saint Dionysius the Areopagite was converted by Saint Paul’s preaching in Athens (Acts 17:34) and became the city’s first bishop. Tradition holds that he later traveled west, evangelizing Gaul and becoming associated with Paris, where he and his companions, Rusticus and Eleutherius, were martyred. Dionysius is remembered as a man of learning and faith who united wisdom with holiness, bridging the early Church’s missionary and philosophical traditions.

PRAYER: O God, who called Saint Dionysius and his companions to shed their blood for Christ, grant that we may imitate their fidelity and one day rejoice with them in eternal glory. Amen 🙏🏾

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF OCTOBER | MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY: October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary, a powerful prayer that draws us into the heart of the Gospel through the eyes of Mary. The Rosary is more than repetition, it is a meditation on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, united with the loving presence of His Blessed Mother. As Pope St. John Paul II reminded us, the Rosary is “a compendium of the Gospel,” helping us to contemplate Christ’s face with Mary.

The twenty mysteries of the Rosary, Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous, invite us to journey with Christ from His Incarnation to His Passion and His triumph over death. Each mystery opens us to God’s saving love, strengthens our faith, and leads us to imitate the virtues of Jesus and Mary in our daily lives. This month, the Church invites us to renew our devotion to the Rosary by praying it daily, whether alone, in families, or in community. Through it, we find peace in times of trial, strength against temptation, and deeper trust in God’s providence. Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, intercedes for us and leads us always to her Son.

“O Mary, our Blessed Mother and Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, teach us to pray with a pure heart and a steadfast spirit. As we meditate on the mysteries of Christ, help us to grow in faith, hope, and love. Intercede for us before your Son, that our families, our Church, and our world may be filled with peace and the light of the Gospel. Amen.” 🙏🏽
