Greetings and blessings, beloved family!
Today, the Church commemorates Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez, Confessor, alongside Saint Marcellus the Centurion and His Family, Martyrs. Saint Alphonsus, through decades of quiet service as a college doorkeeper, saw the face of Christ in every person who knocked, exemplifying a life transformed by inner grace and humble charity. Saint Marcellus, a Roman officer, courageously laid down his weapons and status to remain faithful to Christ above all earthly powers. Their lives reflect today’s Gospel, where Jesus heals a man with dropsy on the Sabbath, demonstrating that the true fulfillment of the law is found in active mercy and love. As Saint Paul prays in the First Reading that our love may increase in discernment so that we may be filled with the fruit of righteousness, let us embrace Christ’s healing compassion in our daily tasks.
BIBLE READINGS FOR TODAY’S HOLY MASS:
Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time | USCCB | https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading
Today’s Bible Readings: Friday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time | Friday, October 30, 2026
Reading 1: Philippians 1:1-11
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 111:1-2, 3-4, 5-6
Gospel: Luke 14:1-6
Gospel Reading ~ Luke 14:1-6
“Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?”
“On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy. Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, ‘Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?’ But they kept silent; so he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him. Then he said to them ‘Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?’ But they were unable to answer his question.”
SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS
Today’s readings highlight the transforming power of divine love and the spiritual discernment required to put compassion above rigid formalism. In the Gospel, Jesus enters the home of a leading Pharisee on the Sabbath, surrounded by critics who are observing Him carefully to catch Him in a fault. When a man suffering from dropsy appears, Jesus asks whether it is lawful to heal on the Sabbath. Confronted by their silent resistance, Jesus heals the man and exposes their hypocrisy by pointing out that any of them would immediately rescue their own child or animal from a pit on the Sabbath. Jesus demonstrates that God’s law is fundamentally a law of active mercy and restoration.
This interior transformation of love is echoed beautifully in the First Reading as Saint Paul opens his letter to the Philippians. Expressing profound joy and affection for his fellow believers, Paul prays that their “love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value.” True Christian love is not a vague feeling, but an ever-growing, discerning grace that purifies our intentions and produces the fruit of righteousness for God’s glory. God, who began a good work in us, is faithful to complete it as we give thanks for His majestic deeds. As the Responsorial Psalm proclaims: “Great are the works of the LORD… gracious and merciful is the LORD.”
Today, let us examine whether our heart aligns with Christ’s active compassion or with quiet, critical judgment. Are we allowing God to complete the good work He began in us by choosing mercy and genuine love over rigid self-righteousness? How can you allow your love to grow in discernment today by extending a timely hand of healing, relief, or care to someone around you?
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your abundant mercy and for beginning a good work of grace within our hearts. Forgive us for the times we have observed others with critical eyes rather than Christlike compassion. Increase our love in knowledge and discernment, so that we may always choose what is pleasing to You. Lay Your healing hands upon us, rescue us from every pit of sin or apathy, and bring Your good work in us to completion for Your glory. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT ALPHONSUS RODRIGUEZ, CONFESSOR: St. Alphonsus (Alonso) Rodriguez (1532–1617) was a Spanish Jesuit lay brother and mystic. After losing his wife, all three of his children, and his family business by age 31, he turned to a life of penance and prayer. Lacking formal education, he was admitted to the Society of Jesus as a lay brother at age 40 and assigned as the porter (doorkeeper) of the Jesuit College in Majorca. He served in this humble role for 46 years, treating every visitor as Christ Himself. His spiritual wisdom influenced many, including St. Peter Claver, whom he encouraged to undertake the South American missions. Writings discovered after his death revealed a profound mystical life of prayer. He was canonized in 1887 and is commemorated on October 31st (and October 30th in traditional calendars).
PRAYER: Lord God, You made St. Alphonsus an exemplar of humble service, patience, and secret contemplation. Through his intercession, grant us the grace to recognize and serve Christ in every person we meet. Amen. 🙏🏽
SAINT MARCELLUS THE CENTURION AND HIS FAMILY, MARTYRS: St. Marcellus (d. 298 A.D.) was a Roman centurion from Galicia who was converted to Christianity alongside his wife, Nona, and their twelve children. During the public birthday celebrations for Emperor Maximian, Marcellus publicly cast off his military armor and weapons, declaring that he could only serve Jesus Christ, the eternal King. Sent to Tangier for trial, he refused to sacrifice to pagan gods and was beheaded. His martyrdom inspired the court secretary, St. Cassian, as well as Marcellus’s sons, who likewise gave their lives for the faith. He is the patron saint of conscientious objectors.
PRAYER: Almighty, ever-living God, You enabled St. Marcellus to fight to the death for justice and truth. Through his intercession, enable us to bear all adversity for the sake of Your Kingdom. Amen. 🙏🏽
Our Blessed Mother Mary, Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez, and Saint Marcellus the Centurion and His Children, pray for us — that we may be faithful in small things, courageous in trials, and steadfast in hope. Amen. 🙏🏾

PRAYER INTENTION: FOR CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS, DOOR-KEEPERS, MAIDS, PORTERS, SOLDIERS, AND DISCERNMENT IN MERCY
Heavenly Father, we give You thanks for the humble fidelity of Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez and the heroic courage of Saint Marcellus the Centurion. Through the intercession of Saint Alphonsus, patron of porters, doorkeepers, and hotel employees, bless all service workers, janitors, and those who perform quiet, unseen labor, enabling them to encounter Christ in everyone they serve. Through Saint Marcellus, patron of conscientious objectors, grant moral courage, peace, and integrity to all soldiers, military personnel, and public officials. Lord Jesus, touch our hearts as You touched the sick man in today’s Gospel; pull us out of the pits of indifference or rigidity, and grant that our love may increase in all discernment for Your glory. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF OCTOBER | MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY: October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary, a powerful prayer that draws us into the heart of the Gospel through the eyes of Mary. The Rosary is more than repetition, it is a meditation on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, united with the loving presence of His Blessed Mother. As Pope St. John Paul II reminded us, the Rosary is “a compendium of the Gospel,” helping us to contemplate Christ’s face with Mary.
The twenty mysteries of the Rosary, Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous, invite us to journey with Christ from His Incarnation to His Passion and His triumph over death. Each mystery opens us to God’s saving love, strengthens our faith, and leads us to imitate the virtues of Jesus and Mary in our daily lives. This month, the Church invites us to renew our devotion to the Rosary by praying it daily, whether alone, in families, or in community. Through it, we find peace in times of trial, strength against temptation, and deeper trust in God’s providence. Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, intercedes for us and leads us always to her Son.
“O Mary, our Blessed Mother and Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, teach us to pray with a pure heart and a steadfast spirit. As we meditate on the mysteries of Christ, help us to grow in faith, hope, and love. Intercede for us before your Son, that our families, our Church, and our world may be filled with peace and the light of the Gospel. Amen.” 🙏🏽
