Greetings and blessings, beloved family and Happy Juneteenth (USA)

Today is the Thursday of the Eleventh week in ordinary time.

[Juneteenth commemorates the day on June 19, 1865 when a Union general read orders in Galveston, Texas stating that all enslaved people in the state were free according to federal law. Juneteenth was designated a federal holiday in the United States in 2021.]

On this special feast day, we pray for all those who are marginalized in our society, the poor and the needy. We pray for justice, peace and love in our world today. We continue to pray for all families and for the safety and well-being of our children and children all over the world. We pray for the Church, the Clergy, our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, the Cardinals, Bishops, all Priests, that they be sanctified in their ministry to God’s people. We pray for persecuted Christians, for the conversion of sinners, and Christians all over the world suffering from political and religious unrest. May God protect us all and keep united in peace, love and faith… Amen 🙏

We thank God for the gift of life and, we lift up in prayer all who celebrate their birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and all those marking special milestones in June. May the Lord bless and favor them abundantly, guide their steps, and grant them joy, peace, and good health of body and mind. Amen 🙏🏽

Through the intercession of St. Joseph, we pray for all fathers, workers and all those who labour in this world. May the Lord bless the work of their hands and may God’s grace and mercy be with us all during this season of the Ordinary Time. Wishing us all and our loved ones a joyful, peaceful, and grace-filled month of June🙏🏽

AN EFFICACIOUS NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

This novena can be prayed any time of year or, as did Padre Pio, perpetually throughout the year. However, it is traditionally prayed for nine days prior to the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart.

Pray all prayers below every day during the novena

The Hail Holy Queen (The Salve Regina)
Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you we cry, poor banished children of Eve;
to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us O most holy Mother of God, That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us. Amen 🙏🏽

Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 110:1, 2, 3, 4
Reading 2, First Corinthians 11:23-26
Gospel, Luke 9:11-17

Today’s Bible Readings: Thursday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time | Thursday, June 19, 2025
Reading 1: 2 Corinthians 11:1–11
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 111:1b–2, 3–4, 7–8
Gospel: Matthew 6:7–15

Gospel Reading ~ Matthew 6:7–15

“This is how you are to pray: ‘Our Father who art in heaven…’”

“Jesus said to His disciples: “In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “This is how you are to pray: ‘Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’
“If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus makes a distinction between the prayer of the pagans and the prayer of his followers. He speaks of pagan prayer as babbling, as using many words, the implication being that by using many words they are trying to force God to listen. Pagan prayer is an attempt to put pressure on God, to manipulate God into doing what those praying want. God is not there to be manipulated by our many words. Rather, the prayer Jesus taught His disciples is the complete opposite of that kind of prayer. Rather than trying to force God’s hand, the Lord’s prayer, as we have come to call it, begins in a spirit of surrender to God and to what God wants –‘your name be held holy, your will be done, your kingdom come’. Jesus would pray a version of those opening petitions of the Lord’s prayer in the garden of Gethsemane, ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I will, but what you will’. Although Jesus recoiled before the prospect of a violent death, He did not try to force God’s hand in prayer. Rather, He surrendered to what God wanted. His prayer of petition was secondary to His prayer of surrender. The Lord’s Prayer begins in that same spirit of surrender to God, and only then does it invite us to petition God on our own behalf. The petitions of the Lord’s Prayer are all in the first person plural, not me and mine but us and ‘our’. As the opening petitions of the Lord’s Prayer suggests, we begin by surrendering to whatever God may want, to God’s purpose for our world and our lives. What matters is God’s name, God’s kingdom, God’s will. We don’t try to force God to do what we want; we surrender to what God wants. After doing that, as the prayer indicates, we acknowledge our dependence on God for our basic needs – for food for the day, for forgiveness, for strength when our faith is put to the test. The petitions of the Lord’s Prayer express our basic material and spiritual needs, as a faith community, our need for sustenance, both physical and spiritual, our need for forgiveness and our need for deliverance when our faith is tested by evil.

The Lord’s Prayer is powerful in its simplicity. It is not simply one prayer among many; it is a teaching on how to pray always. Jesus gave us this prayer so that all of our prayers may be shaped by this model prayer. Jesus not only gives us one prayer, but a whole way of praying. Jesus teaches His disciples the essence of prayer not in long-winded or impressive words, but in the intimate simplicity of a child speaking to a loving Father. The Lord’s Prayer, given to us directly by Jesus, becomes the perfect model: it is reverent yet personal, humble yet bold. It begins with worship (“hallowed be Thy name”), moves into surrender (“Thy will be done”), trust (“give us this day our daily bread”), repentance (“forgive us our trespasses”), and ends with reliance on divine protection (“deliver us from evil”). Each phrase is a complete surrender of the human heart to God’s providence, mercy, and authority. Jesus reminds us that we do not need to manipulate or impress God with our prayers He already knows our needs. What He desires is a sincere heart that turns to Him in faith. Today’s Gospel also highlights the deep connection between forgiveness and prayer. Jesus is clear: If we do not forgive others, we cannot expect to receive the fullness of God’s forgiveness. In a world full of division, resentment, and wounded relationships, this teaching is as radical today as it was then. Forgiveness is not optional for the Christian it is essential. It opens the door to healing, not only between people, but also between humanity and God.

In the First Reading, Saint Paul offers a passionate defense of his ministry, reminding the Corinthians that he labored for them without demanding payment or status. His words reveal a shepherd’s heart jealous for the purity of his flock’s devotion to Christ. Paul feared that the believers were being deceived by false teachers preaching “another Jesus” and a distorted Gospel. With humility and boldness, he affirms that even though he may not be eloquent, he possesses true knowledge of Christ. His mission was never self-serving; it was rooted in love and truth. His example calls us to discern carefully what we receive as spiritual teaching and to guard our hearts against anything that corrupts our sincere commitment to Christ. We are also reminded that authentic ministry is often hidden, humble, and sacrificial just like the way Jesus taught us to pray.

The Responsorial Psalm beautifully complements this message, proclaiming: “Your works, O Lord, are justice and truth.” The psalm celebrates God’s faithful, just, and merciful nature. His precepts are sure, His deeds wondrous, and His truth everlasting. In a world often marked by injustice and manipulation, this Psalm lifts our gaze to the unchanging nature of God. His works are not temporary or self-serving they are faithful and eternal. As we reflect on God’s justice, we are invited to mirror that justice in our own actions to forgive, to speak truth, and to live uprightly.

As we ponder today’s Sacred Scriptures, we are drawn into the heart of true prayer and authentic Christian life. Do I pray with a heart that longs for communion with God, or do I treat prayer as a formality or performance? Am I quick to forgive, or do I still cling to old hurts? Do I discern the voices I follow ensuring they align with the Gospel of Christ or am I swayed by novelty and popularity? Like Saint Paul, am I willing to serve selflessly, even when misunderstood or unrecognized? Today, may we recommit ourselves to the purity of our faith, the sincerity of our prayer, and the courage to forgive. In doing so, we draw closer to the Father who calls us not to perform, but to belong. May God in His infinite grace and mercy, grant us His grace as we continue to strive to serve Him in spirit and in truth 🙏🏽

Heavenly Father, teach me to pray as Jesus taught with trust, simplicity, and love. Cleanse my heart of pride, performance, and unforgiveness. Help me forgive as You forgive, and to live my faith with sincerity and humility. Protect me from false teachings and draw me deeper into Your truth. May my life be rooted in Your Word, my service in love, and my heart in You alone. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

(Direct link to the detailed history of Saint Romuald, Saint Juliana of Falconieri, and Saints Gervase and Protase | https://dailyreflectionswithphilomena.com/saints-of-the-day-feast-day-june-19th/ )

SAINT ROMUALD, ABBOT: Born into nobility in Ravenna around 956 A.D., Saint Romuald seemed destined for a life of comfort and power. But a traumatic event a duel in which his father killed a man shook him to his core and inspired a radical conversion. In sorrow and penance, Romuald entered the Benedictine Monastery of San Apollinare and later became its abbot. Seeking even greater spiritual depth, he eventually left to live as a hermit, embracing silence, prayer, and penance. Over the next three decades, Romuald traveled throughout Italy, reforming lax monasteries and founding hermitages rooted in austere simplicity. His greatest legacy was the Camaldolese Order, which uniquely blended communal Benedictine life with solitary eremitical practice. Despite slander, assassination attempts, and fierce temptations, Romuald remained faithful, conquering trials through deep union with God. Even in old age, he intensified his mortifications, longing to be entirely conformed to Christ. He died in the Monastery of Val di Castro around 1027 and was canonized in 1582.

PRAYER: Saint Romuald, teacher of solitude and master of prayer, intercede for those discerning their vocation, and for all who seek God in silence. May we, like you, deny ourselves, carry our crosses, and follow Christ wholeheartedly. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT JULIANA OF FALCONIERI, RELIGIOUS: Saint Juliana was born in Florence in 1270 to a wealthy and devout family. From childhood, she showed extraordinary piety and purity. Influenced by her holy uncle, Saint Alexis Falconieri, one of the founders of the Servite Order, she consecrated her life to God and joined the Servite’s Third Order at age 14. She eventually became the foundress of the Servite Sisters, or “Mantellate,” dedicated to prayer and care for the sick and poor. Juliana lived a life of profound humility, never looking in a mirror and often fainting at the mere mention of sin. Despite chronic illness that made it impossible for her to eat, she radiated joy and peace. In her final moments, unable to receive Holy Communion, she requested the Eucharist be placed over her heart and when she died, the image of the Host was miraculously imprinted upon her chest. She was canonized in 1737 and remains a powerful patroness of the sick.

PRAYER: Saint Juliana of Falconieri, beloved daughter of Mary and servant of the sick, pray for all who suffer in body or spirit. May your example teach us to endure suffering with grace, love Christ in the Eucharist, and serve others with gentle humility. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINTS GERVASE AND PROTASE, MARTYRS: Saints Gervase and Protase were twin brothers and early Christian martyrs of the second century, born to Saint Vitalis and Saint Valeria. Orphaned by persecution, they inherited their parents’ strong faith. The brothers were arrested during Emperor Nero’s cruel reign and suffered severe tortures. Gervase was beaten to death, and Protase was scourged and then beheaded courageously embracing martyrdom rather than denying Christ. Their relics were miraculously discovered by Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, in 386 A.D., through a vision. The faithful reported many miracles upon their finding, leading to a powerful revival of faith in Milan. Their relics were enshrined beneath the altar of what is now the Basilica of Saint Ambrose, where they remain alongside Saint Ambrose himself. The courageous witness of these brothers continues to inspire persecuted Christians today.

PRAYER: Saints Gervase and Protase, twin martyrs for Christ, pray for those who suffer persecution, especially within families and nations torn by division. May your example strengthen us to endure trials for love of the Gospel and bring healing to broken hearts. Amen. 🙏🏽

THE POPE’S MONTHLY INTENTIONS FOR 2025: FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE: That the world might grow in compassion. Let us pray that each one of us might find consolation in a personal relationship with Jesus, and from his Heart, learn to have compassion on the world.

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF JUNE | MONTH OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS: June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a powerful sign of Christ’s love and mercy. His Heart, pierced and crowned with thorns, burns with compassion for all humanity. This devotion calls us to return love for love to console His Heart and make reparation for sin and indifference. Rooted in the revelations to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the Church invites us this month to deepen our trust in Jesus, especially through First Friday devotions, the Litany of the Sacred Heart, and acts of consecration. His words echo in our hearts: “Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart” (Matthew 11:29).

The Sacred Heart shows us what true love looks like patient, humble, and self-giving. In a world often cold and restless, we find peace and healing in His Heart.

“Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You.”

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, teach us to love as You love. Fill our hearts with compassion, mercy, and a deep desire to follow You. Amen. 🙏🏽

PRAYER INTENTIONS: On this day, as we honor Saints Romuald, Juliana of Falconieri, and the holy martyrs Gervase and Protase, we lift our hearts in prayer for the grace to live with purity of heart, perseverance in suffering, and unwavering love for Christ. We pray for all who seek deeper intimacy with God through prayer, fasting, and hidden sacrifice that like Saint Romuald, they may be strengthened in their spiritual journey. We remember the sick, especially those enduring long-term illness, chronic pain, or terminal conditions, invoking Saint Juliana’s intercession for healing and peace. We pray for persecuted Christians around the world and all who suffer for their faith, that they may find courage in the witness of Saints Gervase and Protase. We ask for unity and reconciliation in divided families, mercy in times of temptation, and the grace to forgive those who have wronged us. May our hearts be formed by the Gospel and our lives hidden in the Father’s love, who sees in secret and rewards in eternity. 🙏🏽

LET US PRAY

My forgiving Lord, You offer the perfection of forgiveness to me and call me to do the same toward others. I pray for Your forgiveness in my life. I am sorry for my sin and beg for Your mercy. In exchange for this holy gift, I pledge to You today to forgive everyone who has sinned against me. I especially forgive those with whom I remain angry. Free me from this anger, dear Lord, so that I may reap the full benefits of Your mercy in my life. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen 🙏🏽

Heavenly Father, You who search the depths of the human heart and know our every need, we entrust this day to You in faith and humility. Teach us to pray as Jesus taught us simply, sincerely, and with childlike trust. Help us to forgive as we long to be forgiven, to love without pretense, and to serve without seeking recognition. By the example of Saint Romuald, grant us the grace of solitude and contemplation; through Saint Juliana’s purity and sacrifice, help us bear our sufferings with joy; and inspired by Saints Gervase and Protase, make us steadfast in faith even amid trials. May our secret prayers rise like incense before You, and may our hidden acts of love draw us ever deeper into the mystery of Your mercy. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

Save Us, Savior of the World. Our Blessed Mother Mary, Saint Romuald, Saint Juliana of Falconieri, and Saints Gervase and Protase ~ Pray for us🙏🏽

Thanking God for the precious gift of this new day, and as we now enter the gentle rhythm of Ordinary Time, may our hearts remain open to the quiet working of the Holy Spirit who continues to guide, renew, and strengthen us each day. May this week be filled with blessings, safety, and the quiet joy that comes from knowing that Christ walks with us always. Alleluia! Have a blessed, safe, grace-filled start to Ordinary Time, and a peaceful and fruitful week🙏🏽
