THE LITURGICAL YEAR IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH | https://dailyreflectionswithphilomena.com/the-liturgical-year-in-the-catholic-church/

Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, January 5, the Church commemorates the Memorial of Saint John Neumann, Bishop, and honors Saint Simeon Stylites, Hermit, and Saint Telesphorus, Pope and Martyr. As we continue to reflect on the light of Christ revealed to the nations, today’s readings call us to discern the Spirit of truth, turn away from sin, and proclaim the nearness of God’s Kingdom. Strengthened by the witness of these holy saints, who served Christ through pastoral zeal, persevering prayer, and courageous martyrdom, we are invited to renew our commitment to live the Gospel with faithfulness, humility, and trust in God’s abiding presence.

We joyfully thank God for the gift of life and for bringing us safely into the new year. As we embark on this fresh journey of faith, we give thanks for God’s boundless mercy and the hope of eternal life promised to those who believe in Him. May the witness of the Saints and the faith of our loved ones inspire us to live each day in holiness, humility, and love. This month of January, dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus, invites us to grow in grace and devotion, following His example of love, obedience, and trust in God’s plan. Through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Name of Jesus, may God fill our hearts with hope, strengthen our faith, and guide us in holiness throughout this new year. May this month bring light to our minds, peace to our hearts, and strength to our souls. Amen 🙏🏽

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” ~ Matthew 5:4

We join our Holy Father Pope Leo XIV to pray for the gentle repose of the souls of our dear beloved late Pope Francis, the Cardinals, Bishops, Priests and Religious who have gone to be with the Lord. We also remember in prayer all who began this journey of life with us but are no longer here. We pray for the gentle repose of the souls of our loved ones who recently passed away, and we continue to pray for the souls in Purgatory; lost souls. For the repose of the souls of all the faithful departed, may the Lord receive them into the light of Eternal Kingdom.

“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His Saints.” ~ Psalm 116:15

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their gentle souls through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace with our Lord Jesus Christ… Amen 🙏🏽

PRAYER FOR THE DEAD: In your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust our brothers and sisters. In this life, you embraced them with your tender love; deliver them now from every evil, and bid them eternal rest. The old order has passed away: welcome them into paradise, where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain, but fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen🙏🏽✝️🕯✝️🕯✝️🕯

Lord Almighty, we lift our hearts in gratitude for Your unfailing love, protection, and mercy that carried us through the past months. We entrust the days of January into Your hands, asking for Your blessings, guidance, and peace upon our lives and families. May this month be for us a time of renewed faith, deeper hope, and overflowing joy. We pray especially for all families, for children, parents, and teachers, that they may be strengthened and protected. Bless those who will celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, new opportunities, and milestones this month, and comfort those who enter it with heavy hearts or struggles. Lord, go before us, walk beside us, and remain with us always, now and forever. Amen. 🙏🏽

Today, we humbly pray for the poor, abandoned, and those in need, for all those who are marginalized in our society. For those who are imprisoned, especially those who are unjustly imprisoned. We pray for charitable organizations, asking God’s blessing upon their mission and we lift our prayers for peace, love, justice and unity in our families, marriages and our world. May God protect us all and keep us safe and united in peace, love and faith. Amen 🙏🏽

Through the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary on this special Feast day, we lift our prayers for the protection, safety and well-being of healthcare professionals, educators, missionaries, pilots, and all travelers. We ask for healing for the sick and dying, especially those who are suffering from cancers and other terminal diseases, strength for the weary, peace in troubled homes, and provision for all in need. Guide our steps in righteousness, protect us from harm, and fill our hearts with faith, joy, and gratitude. May this month draw us closer to Your will, and may every day be a testimony of Your goodness and mercy in our lives. We begin this month with trust in Your unfailing love, Lord, and we surrender all that lies ahead into Your hands. Amen 🙏🏾

We continue to pray for the Church, the Clergy, our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, the Cardinals, Bishops, all Priests, that they be sanctified in their ministry to God’s people. We pray for persecuted Christians, for the conversion of sinners, and Christians all over the world suffering from political and religious unrest.

Through the intercession of St. Joseph, we pray for all fathers, mothers, workers, and all those who labor in this world. May the Lord bless the work of their hands, and may God’s grace and mercy be with us all during this season of Advent. Wishing us all and our loved ones a joyful, peaceful, and grace-filled month of January. 🙏🏽

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS:

Bible Readings for today’s Holy Mass, Monday after Epiphany | USCCB | https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading

Today’s Bible Readings: Memorial of Saint John Neumann, Bishop | January 5, 2026
Reading 1: 1 John 3:22–4:6
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 2:7bc–8, 10–12a
Gospel: Matthew 4:12–17, 23–25

Gospel Reading ~ Matthew 4:12–17, 23–25

“Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen. From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.” He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people. His fame spread to all of Syria, and they brought to him all who were sick with various diseases and racked with pain, those who were possessed, lunatics, and paralytics, and he cured them. And great crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan followed him.

In today’s Gospel reading, we witness the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. After the arrest of John the Baptist, Jesus steps forward to proclaim the nearness of God’s Kingdom. He deliberately chooses Galilee, a place often overlooked and considered insignificant, to reveal the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy: “The people who sit in darkness have seen a great light.” This choice reminds us that God’s saving work often begins on the margins, among those who feel forgotten, weary, or lost.

Jesus’ first message is both urgent and hopeful: “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Repentance here is not merely sorrow for sin but a call to conversion, a turning of the heart toward God. The Kingdom is not distant or abstract; it is present wherever Christ is welcomed. Through His teaching, healing, and compassion, Jesus reveals a Kingdom marked by mercy, restoration, and new life. Those burdened by sickness, pain, and suffering are drawn to Him, and He responds with healing and care, showing that God’s reign brings wholeness to both body and soul.

Reflecting more deeply on the Gospel, Jesus’ ministry challenges us to consider how we respond to His call today. The crowds follow Him not only because of His words, but because His actions reveal God’s love in tangible ways. He proclaims the Gospel and lives it. This reminds us that authentic discipleship requires both faith and action. To follow Christ means allowing His light to penetrate our darkness and being willing to change our lives in response to His presence.

In the First Reading, Saint John emphasizes the inseparable connection between faith and love. To believe in Jesus Christ is to live according to His commandment: to love one another. John also warns believers to “test the spirits,” reminding us that not every voice or teaching comes from God. True faith always acknowledges Jesus Christ come in the flesh and bears fruit in love, obedience, and truth. In a world filled with conflicting messages and false promises, we are called to discern carefully, guided by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. The reassurance given is powerful: “The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

The Responsorial Psalm proclaims God’s sovereignty over all nations and calls rulers and peoples alike to serve the Lord with reverence and joy. It points to Christ, the Son who receives the nations as His inheritance. This Psalm echoes the Gospel’s proclamation of the Kingdom, reminding us that Christ’s reign is universal and rooted in justice, humility, and obedience to God. To belong to His Kingdom is to live under His loving authority.

As we reflect on the Sacred Scriptures today, let us ask ourselves: Am I open to Christ’s call to repentance and conversion? Do my words and actions reflect my belief in Jesus Christ come in the flesh? Am I attentive to the voice of the Spirit of truth amid the many voices of the world? Today’s readings invite us to step out of darkness and walk in the light of Christ, trusting that His Kingdom is already at work within and among us. May we remain faithful to His truth, grow in love for one another, and become living witnesses to the Gospel we profess. May God grant us the grace to follow Christ wholeheartedly, proclaiming His Kingdom by the way we live each day. 🙏🏽

Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Light that shines in our darkness and the Good News that brings healing and hope. Call us daily to repentance and deeper conversion of heart. Strengthen us with Your Spirit to discern truth from error and to live in faith, love, and obedience to Your will. May Your Kingdom take root within us, guiding our words and actions, so that we may reflect Your light to the world. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

MEMORIAL OF SAINT JOHN NEUMANN, BISHOP; SAINT SIMEON STYLITES, HERMIT; AND SAINT TELESPHORUS, POPE AND MARTYR – FEAST DAY: JANUARY 5TH: Today, the Church commemorates the Memorial of Saint John Neumann, Bishop (Patron of Catholic Education); Saint Simeon Stylites, Hermit (Patron of Ascetics and Perseverance); and Saint Telesphorus, Pope and Martyr (Patron of the Carmelite Order). Though they lived in different times and embraced distinct paths of holiness—pastoral leadership, radical asceticism, and martyrdom—they were united by unwavering fidelity to Christ. Their lives remind us that holiness is found in faithful service, deep prayer, and courageous witness, even amid hardship and sacrifice. As we honor them today, may their example strengthen our commitment to live the Gospel with perseverance and trust in God. 🙏🏾

SAINT JOHN NEUMANN, BISHOP: Saint John Nepomucene Neumann (1811–1860) was born in Bohemia and felt a deep call to missionary priesthood. When opportunities were limited in his homeland, he courageously journeyed to the United States, where he was ordained and dedicated his life to serving immigrant communities. Joining the Redemptorists, he labored tirelessly as a missionary before being appointed Bishop of Philadelphia.

As bishop, Saint John Neumann transformed Catholic life in America through his extraordinary commitment to education and pastoral care. He established numerous parishes, schools, and charitable institutions, promoted devotion to the Holy Eucharist, and strengthened the faith of countless families. Known for his humility, simplicity, and tireless zeal, he died suddenly while on pastoral duty and became the first American bishop to be canonized.

PRAYER: O God, You filled Saint John Neumann with zeal for souls and love for Your Church. Through his intercession, strengthen all who serve in Christian education and inspire us to live with humility, generosity, and faith. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT SIMEON STYLITES, HERMIT: Saint Simeon Stylites (c. 390–459) was a Syrian ascetic whose desire for holiness led him to an extraordinary life of prayer and penance. After years in monastic life, he embraced solitude as a hermit and eventually lived atop a pillar for nearly four decades, dedicating himself entirely to God.

From his pillar, Saint Simeon became a powerful spiritual guide to pilgrims, rulers, and sinners alike. His life of radical detachment, constant prayer, and perseverance bore great spiritual fruit, leading many to conversion and deeper faith. He remains a striking witness to total surrender to God.

PRAYER: Lord God, You strengthened Saint Simeon Stylites to persevere in prayer and sacrifice. Grant us the grace to seek You above all things and to remain faithful in our own call to holiness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT TELESPHORUS, POPE AND MARTYR: Saint Telesphorus governed the Church as Pope during the second century, a time marked by persecution and suffering. Of Greek origin, he faithfully shepherded the early Christian community and bore witness to the faith through his steadfast leadership and eventual martyrdom.

He is remembered for his devotion to the Church’s liturgical life and unity, and ancient testimony honors him as a glorious martyr. His courageous witness strengthened the young Church and continues to inspire fidelity amid trials.

PRAYER: O Lord, who crowned Saint Telesphorus with martyrdom, grant that through his intercession we may remain faithful to Christ and courageous in professing our faith. Strengthen Your Church in unity and peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏾

MONTH OF THE HOLY NAME OF JESUS: The month of January is traditionally dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus. After the Blessed Virgin Mary conceived by the Holy Spirit, the Angel Gabriel appeared to St. Joseph told him that the Child’s name should be called Jesus, meaning “God Saves.” According to Jewish law, on the 8th day after his birth, a male child was to be circumcised, receive his name, and become a full member of God’s covenant people. According to the old Roman liturgical calendar, the Feast of the Circumcision of Jesus was celebrated on January 1st, eight days after Christmas, the same day that He was given His sacred name. Currently, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Mother of God on January 1st and honor the Holy Name of Jesus on January 3rd. For Catholics, Jesus’ sacred name is the object of a special devotion symbolized by the monogram “IHS,” (sometimes called a Christogram), which is the first three letters of the Greek spelling of His name.

PRAYER INTENTIONS: Inspired by today’s readings and the lives of Saint John Neumann, Saint Simeon Stylites, and Saint Telesphorus, we lift our hearts to God in prayer. We pray for the Church, that she may faithfully discern the Spirit of truth and boldly proclaim the Gospel of repentance and hope to all nations. We pray for bishops, priests, and missionaries, that, like Saint John Neumann, they may serve with humility, zeal, and deep love for God’s people. We remember those called to lives of prayer, sacrifice, and hidden holiness, asking that the example of Saint Simeon Stylites may encourage perseverance and fidelity. We also pray for Christians facing persecution or hardship, that through the intercession of Saint Telesphorus, they may remain steadfast in faith and confident in God’s victory. Finally, we pray for our own hearts, that we may turn away from sin, walk in obedience to God’s commandments, and live as true children of the Kingdom.

LET US PRAY:

Lord God, You send Your Son to proclaim the Kingdom and call all people to repentance and new life. Strengthen us to listen to the voice of Your Spirit, to walk in truth, and to follow Christ with generous hearts. Through the intercession of Saint John Neumann, Saint Simeon Stylites, and Saint Telesphorus, grant us perseverance in faith, courage in witness, and joy in serving You. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏾
