Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, the Church joyfully celebrates the Memorial of Pope Saint John Paul II, alongside Saint Mary Salome and Saint Mello of Cardiff. Pope Saint John Paul II, the “Pope of the Family” and apostle to young people, traveled to the ends of the earth proclaiming the Gospel, famously crying out to the world: “Be not afraid!” His life of untiring apostolic zeal, together with the humble fidelity of Saint Mary Salome at the foot of the Cross and Saint Mello’s early missionary labors, embodies the blazing fire of love that Christ speaks of in today’s Gospel. As Saint Paul prays in the First Reading that we may be strengthened in the inner self and rooted in a love that surpasses knowledge, these saints remind us that choosing Christ requires a radical, fearless decision to stand firm in truth and let His Holy Spirit transform our world.

🙏🏽 A PRAYER FOR OUR HOLY FATHER, POPE LEO XIV 🙏🏽🤍

According to the Vatican News Pope Leo XIV has officially been discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital and has returned safely to the Vatican, recovering well ahead of initial schedules following his lung surgery. We give thanks for his successful discharge and continue to hold Pope Leo XIV in our prayers for his complete healing, restored strength, and continued good health. Amen 🙏🏾.

BIBLE READINGS FOR TODAY’S HOLY MASS:

Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time | USCCB | https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading

Today’s Bible Readings: Thursday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time | Thursday, October 22, 2026
Reading 1:
Ephesians 3:14-21
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 33:1-2, 4-5, 11-12, 18-19
Gospel: Luke 12:49-53

Gospel Reading ~ Luke 12:49-53

“I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!”

“Jesus said to his disciples: ‘I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.'”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

Today’s readings set before us the burning, uncompromising intensity of Christ’s love and the radical commitment required of every true disciple. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks with urgent passion: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” This fire is the consuming love of the Holy Spirit and the truth of the Gospel, which demands an absolute decision. Jesus warns that His truth will bring division, even among close family ties, because choosing Christ often means standing apart from worldly compromises and cultural expectations. Following Him requires a radical choice that cannot settle for lukewarm indifference.

Yet, the very fire that divides us from worldly mindsets is the divine love that anchors and strengthens our inner self. In the magnificent First Reading, Saint Paul kneels before the Father, praying that we may be strengthened through His Spirit so that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith. Paul invites us to be rooted and grounded in love, coming to know the love of Christ that surpasses human knowledge so that we may be filled with all the fullness of God. God does not leave us to face trial in our own strength; as Paul boldly proclaims, He “is able to accomplish far more than all we ask or imagine, by the power at work within us.” As the Responsorial Psalm joyfully affirms: “The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord… See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him, upon those who hope for his kindness.”

Today, let us reflect on the temperature of our faith. Are we allowing the Holy Spirit to ignite a blazing fire of love and conviction within us, or have we allowed our commitment to grow cool out of fear of conflict or disapproval?

How can you allow the fire of Christ’s love to consume your doubts today, empowering you to take a clear, loving stand for His truth?

Heavenly Father, we thank You for sending Your Son to ignite the earth with the holy fire of Your love and truth. Forgive us for the times we have chosen lukewarm comfort over courageous discipleship or feared human division more than separating ourselves from You. Root and ground our hearts in Your love, and strengthen our inner self through Your Holy Spirit. Accomplish within us far more than we could ever ask or imagine, so that our lives may glorify You forever. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINTS OF THE DAY | OCTOBER 22ND:

Direct link to the detailed history of Saint John Paul II, Saint Mary Salome, and Saint Mello of Cardiff | https://dailyreflectionswithphilomena.com/saints-of-the-day-feast-day-october-22nd/

SAINT JOHN PAUL II, POPE (1920–2005): Pope Saint John Paul II born Karol Józef Wojtyła in Wadowice, Poland was a man of deep prayer, courage, and vision. His 27-year pontificate, one of the longest in Church history, transformed the modern world. Through his tireless missionary spirit, he traveled to 129 countries, bringing Christ’s message of hope, peace, and dignity to millions. He inspired young people through World Youth Day, promoted the sanctity of family life, and upheld the “Theology of the Body” as a profound teaching on human love and divine purpose. His witness of forgiveness—visiting and pardoning his would-be assassin—and his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Totus Tuus (“Totally Yours”) remain powerful examples of mercy and trust. His courage in suffering, particularly during his final years with Parkinson’s disease, revealed a shepherd who led not only by words but by love. Canonized by Pope Francis in 2014, Saint John Paul II continues to inspire the Church to proclaim: “Be not afraid! Open wide the doors to Christ!”

PRAYER: Almighty and eternal God, You gave the Church in Saint John Paul II a shepherd filled with zeal and compassion. Through his intercession, grant us courage to live our faith joyfully, to defend the dignity of every person, and to proclaim the Gospel with love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT MARY SALOME (1st Century): Saint Mary Salome was the devoted wife of Zebedee and the mother of the apostles James the Greater and John the Evangelist, often called the “sons of thunder.” She followed Jesus during His public ministry and was among the holy women who stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross. Her love for Christ led her to serve Him in simplicity and courage. On Easter morning, she was one of the women who brought spices to anoint the Lord’s body and received the glorious news of the Resurrection. In her humble service and maternal devotion, Saint Mary Salome reveals the strength of faith born from love and perseverance.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, You chose Saint Mary Salome to serve You faithfully and to share in the mystery of Your Passion and Resurrection. Through her prayers, bless all mothers and families, that they may find strength and joy in following You each day. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT MELLO OF CARDIFF, BISHOP: Saint Mello of Cardiff  (229-314) is listed as Mallonous, Mellouns, and Melanius. He was an early 4th-century Bishop of Rotomagus (now Rouen) in the Roman province of Secunda Provincia Lugdunensis (now Normandy in France). He was the first bishop of Rouen, France. A native of Cardiff, Wales. He was converted while in Rome and sent to France as a missionary by Pope St. Stephen.

PRAYER: O God, who called Saint Mello from his homeland to spread the Gospel abroad, grant that through his prayers we may have the same courage to witness to Your truth in our daily lives. Strengthen all missionaries and pastors in their service of Your Kingdom. Amen. 🙏🏾

Our Blessed Mother Mary, Saint John Paul II, Saint Mary Salome, and Saint Mello of Cardiff — Pray for us. 🙏🏾

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF OCTOBER | MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY: October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary, a powerful prayer that draws us into the heart of the Gospel through the eyes of Mary. The Rosary is more than repetition, it is a meditation on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, united with the loving presence of His Blessed Mother. As Pope St. John Paul II reminded us, the Rosary is “a compendium of the Gospel,” helping us to contemplate Christ’s face with Mary.

The twenty mysteries of the Rosary, Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous, invite us to journey with Christ from His Incarnation to His Passion and His triumph over death. Each mystery opens us to God’s saving love, strengthens our faith, and leads us to imitate the virtues of Jesus and Mary in our daily lives. This month, the Church invites us to renew our devotion to the Rosary by praying it daily, whether alone, in families, or in community. Through it, we find peace in times of trial, strength against temptation, and deeper trust in God’s providence. Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, intercedes for us and leads us always to her Son.

“O Mary, our Blessed Mother and Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, teach us to pray with a pure heart and a steadfast spirit. As we meditate on the mysteries of Christ, help us to grow in faith, hope, and love. Intercede for us before your Son, that our families, our Church, and our world may be filled with peace and the light of the Gospel. Amen.” 🙏🏽
