Today is a historic and joyful day for the Catholic Church as Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen is beatified at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The Beatification Mass will begin at 2:00 p.m. Central Time and will be presided over by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, representing His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.
With his beatification, Archbishop Sheen will receive the title “Blessed,” recognizing his life of heroic virtue and the miracle attributed to his intercession.
Born on May 8, 1895, in El Paso, Illinois, Fulton Sheen was ordained to the priesthood in 1919. He became one of the most influential Catholic evangelists of the twentieth century—a gifted preacher, theologian, professor, missionary leader, author, and pioneer of Catholic radio and television.
Through programs such as The Catholic Hour and Life Is Worth Living, Archbishop Sheen brought the truths of the Catholic faith into millions of homes. His preaching was intellectually profound yet remarkably accessible, helping countless people encounter Jesus Christ and understand that every human life has dignity, purpose, and eternal value.
At the heart of Archbishop Sheen’s remarkable ministry was his love for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. For decades, he faithfully made a daily Holy Hour before the Blessed Sacrament. His public ministry flowed from this hidden life of prayer.
He also possessed a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and an extraordinary missionary spirit. As National Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, he worked tirelessly to support the Church’s missions and remind Catholics that the Gospel belongs to every nation and every people.
The miracle recognized through his intercession involved James Fulton Engstrom, who was born without signs of life in September 2010. After family and friends prayed through Archbishop Sheen’s intercession, the child revived and recovered without the severe neurological injury physicians had expected. Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing the miracle in 2019.
