Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, on the Memorial of Saint Peter Claver, the Gospel reminds us through the Beatitudes that true happiness, eternal reward, and the Kingdom of God belong to those who rely on Him, endure hardships, and embrace spiritual poverty over worldly luxury. In the First Reading, Saint Paul urges us to keep an eternal perspective because “the world in its present form is passing away.” Today, the Church honors Saint Peter Claver, the heroic Jesuit “slave of the negroes forever,” who spent forty years in Cartagena bringing physical aid, human dignity, and Catholic baptism to over 300,000 enslaved Africans. We also celebrate Saint Gorgonius, a high-ranking Roman officer martyred under Diocletian for his unshakeable faith, and Saint Kieran the Younger, one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland and founder of the renowned Clonmacnoise Abbey. Inspired by their extraordinary love, courage, and dedication to Christ, let us open our hearts to serve the marginalized and live for the glory of His eternal Kingdom.

“Blessed are you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours.”

“Raising his eyes toward his disciples Jesus said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven. For their ancestors treated the prophets in the same way. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. But woe to you who are filled now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will grieve and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for their ancestors treated the false prophets in this way.'”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In today’s Gospel, Jesus delivers the profound and radical Sermon on the Plain, declaring the Beatitudes and corresponding woes. Looking upon His disciples, He turns worldly values upside down by pronouncing blessings on the poor, the hungry, the weeping, and the persecuted for His sake. Jesus reveals that true happiness and eternal worth are not measured by earthly wealth, comfort, applause, or self-sufficiency, but by a dependent relationship with God. Those who suffer and anchor their hope in Christ will find their true satisfaction and ultimate vindication in the Kingdom of Heaven, while those who live entirely for present comforts risk missing the eternal grace of God.

Saint Paul echoes this urgent perspective on earthly life in the First Reading from his letter to the Corinthians. Writing amid times of trial and distress, Paul reminds us that “the world in its present form is passing away.” He urges believers not to become overly attached to the transient things of this age—whether possessions, griefs, joys, or human relationships—but to live with an eternal focus, using the things of this world as though not engrossed by them. The Responsorial Psalm beautifully complements this heavenly orientation, drawing our hearts upward to the divine King with the imagery of the royal bride: “Listen to me, daughter; see and bend your ear… So shall the king desire your beauty.”

Together, these readings challenge us to reevaluate where we place our trust and find our security. Are we chasing the temporary approvals and riches of a passing world, or are we investing our hearts in the eternal Kingdom of God? True Christian discipleship calls us to embrace spiritual poverty—relying utterly on God’s grace—and to find joy even in hardships, knowing that our ultimate reward is secure in heaven.

Are there temporary comforts, anxieties, or possessions in your life that have taken precedence over your relationship with God? How can you reorient your heart today toward the eternal values of Christ’s Kingdom?

Heavenly Father, You alone are the true source of lasting joy, peace, and security. Forgive us for the times we have sought our comfort in earthly riches, human applause, or the passing things of this world. Grant us the grace to embrace the spirit of the Beatitudes, finding our true treasure in Your Kingdom. Help us to keep our eyes fixed on eternity, recognizing that this world is passing away, and strengthen us to endure trials with joyful hope. May our lives reflect the beauty of Your grace, now and forever. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT PETER CLAVER, PRIEST (1580–1654): Born in Verdu, Catalonia, Spain, St. Peter Claver became a Jesuit priest and missionary in Cartagena, Colombia. Influenced by his mentor St. Alphonsus Rodriguez, he dedicated his life to ministering to African slaves arriving in the Americas. Declaring himself the “slave of the Negroes forever,” he tirelessly served the sick and dying, brought food and medicine, and baptized over 300,000 slaves during his 40 years of ministry. Despite opposition and poor health, he embodied Christ’s love with humility and sacrifice, often saying: “We must speak to them with our hands, before we try to speak to them with our lips.”

He died in Cartagena on September 8, 1654, and was canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1888, who proclaimed him patron of missions to African peoples and a protector of racial justice.

PRAYER: God of mercy and love, through the example of St. Peter Claver, help us to overcome prejudice and division, and to see in every person the dignity of a child of God. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT GORGONIUS, MARTYR (d. 303): St. Gorgonius was a Roman officer in the court of Emperor Diocletian who secretly embraced the Christian faith. Along with companions Dorotheus and others, he was arrested for refusing to renounce Christ. They were brutally tortured with scourging and salt, roasted on a gridiron, and strangled to death in Nicomedia.

Though Diocletian ordered their bodies to be cast into the sea, Christians recovered Gorgonius’s remains and enshrined them in Rome. His relics were later venerated in Metz, France, and he is remembered for his steadfast witness during one of the fiercest persecutions of the early Church.

PRAYER: Saint Gorgonius, courageous martyr, intercede for us that we may hold fast to Christ with unwavering faith. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT KIERAN THE YOUNGER, RELIGIOUS (512–546): St. Kieran, also called St. Ciaran of Clonmacnoise, was born in Connacht, Ireland, the son of a carpenter. After studying under St. Finnian of Clonard, he became one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland and was admired for his learning, humility, and miracles. He later founded the great monastery of Clonmacnoise, which became a center of faith and scholarship for centuries, attracting students from across Europe.

Though he died at only 33 years old, his influence shaped the future of the Irish Church. He is venerated as the first Irish-born saint and a model of youthful holiness and wisdom.

PRAYER: Saint Kieran, humble servant of God, inspire us to seek wisdom, holiness, and fidelity in our daily lives. Amen. 🙏🏾

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER | MONTH OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS: September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, inviting us to unite our hearts with Mary in her profound sharing of Christ’s Passion. As Simeon foretold, “a sword will pierce your own soul too” (Luke 2:35), and throughout her life Mary endured deep sorrows that culminated at Calvary. In her silent strength and unwavering faith, she became the compassionate Mother of all Christians, offering her suffering with Christ for the salvation of the world.

This month, the Church calls us to meditate on the Seven Sorrows of Mary: Simeon’s prophecy, the Flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple, meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, standing at the foot of the Cross, receiving His lifeless Body, and placing Him in the tomb. By reflecting on these sorrows, we learn patience in trials, compassion for the suffering, and a deeper love for Jesus who suffered for us.

Prayers such as the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows, the Rosary of Our Lady of Sorrows, and the Litany of Our Lady of Sorrows help us to walk with Mary in her suffering and to discover hope and consolation in her maternal heart.

“Most Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, teach us to stand with you at the Cross, sharing in Christ’s love and redemptive sacrifice.”
