Happy Labor Day (USA)! Today, the United States observes this holiday on the first Monday of September as a national tribute to the contributions of workers to the nation’s prosperity.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” ~ Colossians 3:23

The Church lifts up St. Joseph the Worker as the patron of all workers. As a humble carpenter in Nazareth and the foster father of Jesus, St. Joseph exemplified the dignity of ordinary labor. His life shows us that through patience, honesty, and diligence, work becomes a pathway to holiness. He reminds us that no task is too small when it is done with love and entrusted to God.

On this Labor Day, as the nation remembers the struggles and victories of the labor movement, we are invited to also reflect spiritually. May we give thanks for the gift of work, pray for justice and dignity for all laborers, and look to St. Joseph the Worker as our guide in offering our daily efforts to God with wholehearted devotion.

PRAYER TO SAINT JOSEPH THE WORKER:

O glorious Saint Joseph, model of all those who are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of penance for the expiation of my sins. To work conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my natural inclinations. To work with thankfulness and joy, considering it an honor to employ and develop by labor the gifts I have received from God. To work with order, peace, patience, and moderation, never shrinking from difficulty, but dying to self with purity of intention and with selfless love. May I be mindful of death and of the accounting for time lost, talents unused, and good left undone. For the sake of Jesus and Mary, may all my work be done with my intentions unified with them.

St. Joseph, model of all workers, help me to work diligently and with integrity, finding joy in my labor. Guide my steps and intercede for me before God. Amen 🙏🏽

Today, on Monday of the Twenty-Third Week in Ordinary Time, the Gospel challenges us to look past rigid legalism and embrace the heart of God’s law by doing good, healing the broken, and saving life. In the First Reading, Saint Paul warns the Corinthians against the corrupting “yeast” of malice, calling them to live in sincerity and truth as we follow our Good Shepherd. Today, we honor Saint Regina, a courageous young virgin and martyr who endured imprisonment and torture for her unwavering love for Christ, and Saint Cloud, a Frankish royal prince who renounced his crown and wealth to embrace a life of humble priesthood, prayer, and service to God. Inspired by their fearless devotion and purity of heart, let us allow Christ to heal our spirits and renew our commitment to living out the Gospel.

Gospel Reading ~ Luke 6:6-11

“Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?”

“On a certain sabbath Jesus went into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure on the sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him. But he realized their intentions and said to the man with the withered hand, ‘Come up and stand before us.’ And he rose and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, ‘I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?’ Looking around at them all, he then said to him, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He did so and his hand was restored. But they became enraged and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In today’s Gospel, Jesus enters the synagogue on the Sabbath and encounters a man with a withered hand, alongside scribes and Pharisees who are watching closely just to see if He will heal on the Sabbath so they can accuse Him. Looking past their legalistic traps and malicious intentions, Jesus cuts straight to the heart of God’s law by asking a piercing question: Is it lawful to do good or to do evil on the Sabbath, to save life or to destroy it? Without hesitation, He restores the man’s hand, demonstrating that divine love, mercy, and the alleviation of human suffering are never restricted by holy days or rigid human rules. While the man is healed and rejoices, the closed-hearted Pharisees become enraged, plotting against the very source of life and goodness.

In the First Reading, Saint Paul addresses a severe case of unrepentant immorality in the Corinthian community, rebuking the people for being “inflated with pride” instead of being sorrowful over sin. Using the vivid metaphor of yeast, Paul warns how a little malice and wickedness can silently corrupt an entire community, urging them to clear out the old yeast and celebrate the feast with “the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth” because Christ, our Paschal Lamb, has been sacrificed. The Responsorial Psalm echoes this call for purity and divine justice, reminding us that God delights not in wickedness, but acts as a secure refuge for all who take shelter in His name: “Lead me in your justice, Lord.”

Together, these readings challenge us to examine our own hearts and motives. Are we hiding behind rigid rules, judgment, or indifference while ignoring opportunities to do good, or are we letting Christ’s healing power transform us? Furthermore, they remind us to purge the hidden “yeast” of sin and pride from our lives, walking instead in the sincerity, truth, and active mercy of the Gospel.

Are there areas of your life where you have allowed rigid habits, indifference, or unrepentant sin to dull your desire to do good for others? How can you allow Jesus to heal your spiritual “withered hand” today and fill you with His sincerity and truth?

Heavenly Father, You are the God of justice, mercy, and life, and You desire that we show compassion rather than empty formalism. Forgive us for the times we have let judgment, pride, or hardened rules blind us to the needs of our suffering neighbors. Cleanse our hearts from the old yeast of malice and wickedness, and fill us with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth through the sacrifice of Christ, our Paschal Lamb. Grant us the courage to do good, to heal the brokenhearted, and to follow the voice of our Good Shepherd wherever He leads. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT REGINA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR (d. 286): Born in Burgundy, France, Saint Regina was secretly baptized by her Christian nurse after losing her mother at birth. When she consecrated her life to Christ and refused to renounce her faith to marry the Roman prefect Olybrius, she was imprisoned, severely tortured, and finally martyred at age fifteen. A symbol of courage for the persecuted, she is the patron saint of shepherdesses, the poor, and victims of abuse and torture.

SAINT CLOUD, PRIEST (522–560): Grandson of King Clovis and prince of the Frankish royal family, Saint Cloud survived the assassination of his royal brothers by their ambitious uncles. He renounced all claims to the throne, chose a life of humility, and became a monk and priest under the guidance of holy recluses. He founded a monastery at Nogent (now named Saint Cloud in his honor) and spent his remaining days in prayer, pastoral care, and holy service.

PRAYER: Lord God, You showered heavenly gifts on Saint Regina and guided Saint Cloud from royal privilege to the humility of the priesthood. Help us to imitate their steadfast faith and virtue during our earthly life, that we may enjoy eternal happiness with You in heaven. Amen.🙏🏾

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER | MONTH OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS: September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, inviting us to unite our hearts with Mary in her profound sharing of Christ’s Passion. As Simeon foretold, “a sword will pierce your own soul too” (Luke 2:35), and throughout her life Mary endured deep sorrows that culminated at Calvary. In her silent strength and unwavering faith, she became the compassionate Mother of all Christians, offering her suffering with Christ for the salvation of the world.

This month, the Church calls us to meditate on the Seven Sorrows of Mary: Simeon’s prophecy, the Flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple, meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, standing at the foot of the Cross, receiving His lifeless Body, and placing Him in the tomb. By reflecting on these sorrows, we learn patience in trials, compassion for the suffering, and a deeper love for Jesus who suffered for us.

Prayers such as the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows, the Rosary of Our Lady of Sorrows, and the Litany of Our Lady of Sorrows help us to walk with Mary in her suffering and to discover hope and consolation in her maternal heart.

“Most Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, teach us to stand with you at the Cross, sharing in Christ’s love and redemptive sacrifice.”
