Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, on the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Lord challenges us in the Gospel to reject worldly ease, deny ourselves, take up our daily crosses, and follow Him with wholehearted devotion. Today, we honor Saint Jeanne Jugan (Sister Mary of the Cross), foundress of the Little Sisters of the Poor, who spent her life humbly serving the destitute elderly and bearing the heavy cross of obscurity with heroic patience. We also remember Saints Felix and Adauctus, early Roman martyrs who stood together in courage for the faith, and Saint Fiacre, an Irish hermit whose life of solitude, prayer, and miraculous charity transformed entire communities. Inspired by their lives of radical self-giving and sacrifice, let us renew our minds, embrace our daily trials, and offer our lives as living sacrifices pleasing to God.

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

“Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, ‘God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.’ He turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.’ Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct.'”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In today’s Gospel, Jesus reveals the hard, central truth of Christian discipleship: the path to glory passes through the Cross. Right after Peter’s glorious confession of faith, Jesus explains that He must suffer, die, and be raised. When Peter tries to dissuade Him out of human comfort and fear of suffering, Jesus rebukes him sternly: “Get behind me, Satan! You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Jesus makes it clear that following Him is not a call to worldly ease or self-preservation, but a call to self-denial, surrender, and sacrifice. To gain eternal life, we must be willing to lose our lives for His sake, trusting that true fulfillment is found not in acquiring the whole world, but in faithful obedience to God.

In the First Reading, the prophet Jeremiah expresses the interior agony of speaking God’s word in a hostile world. Mocked and ridiculed daily for proclaiming the truth, Jeremiah attempts to remain silent, but God’s word becomes “like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones,” forcing him to cry out despite the cost. The Responsorial Psalm echoes this profound spiritual longing through Psalm 63: “My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.” It reminds us that God’s steadfast love is better than life itself, sustaining us even when parched by life’s trials. In the Second Reading, Saint Paul urges the Romans not to conform to the standards of this present age, but to offer their bodies as a living sacrifice and be transformed by the renewal of their minds, discerning the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

Together, these readings challenge us to embrace the cost of true discipleship. The Christian walk requires us to resist the easy path of worldly conformity, endure the fires of trials, and carry our daily crosses with unwavering trust. When we align our thinking with God’s design rather than human desires, our suffering becomes united with Christ’s, producing in us a faith that is holy, pleasing, and victorious.

Heavenly Father, You have called us to follow Your divine Son and take up our daily crosses in faith. Forgive us for the times we have sought comfort, human approval, or worldly gain over fidelity to Your Gospel. Grant us the courage of Jeremiah, that Your truth may burn like an unquenchable fire within our hearts. Renew our minds by the power of the Holy Spirit, that we may not conform to the standards of this age, but discern and embrace Your perfect will. Strengthen us to deny ourselves, offer our lives as living sacrifices, and follow Jesus with joyful devotion, looking forward to the glory of His return. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT JEANNE JUGAN (SISTER MARY OF THE CROSS), RELIGIOUS (1792–1879): Born in Brittany, France, during the upheaval of the French Revolution, Jeanne Jugan grew up in poverty after her father was lost at sea. Refusing marriage proposals, she discerned a deeper call from God to serve the poor. In 1839, she welcomed into her small home a blind, paralyzed woman who had no one to care for her. Giving up her own bed, Jeanne began what would become a lifelong mission of mercy. Others soon joined her, and from her humble charity grew the Little Sisters of the Poor, a congregation dedicated to serving the abandoned elderly with dignity and love. Though later removed unjustly from leadership and hidden in obscurity for decades, Jeanne bore her suffering with humility and prayer, uniting herself to the Cross of Christ. At her death in 1879, her congregation had spread across the world, serving thousands of elderly poor. She was canonized in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI, who hailed her as “a beacon to guide our societies” toward renewed love for the elderly. Today, she is venerated as Patroness of the destitute elderly.

PRAYER: Lord, through Saint Jeanne Jugan’s humble service, You revealed the beauty of charity toward the forgotten and abandoned. May her example inspire us to love generously, especially the poor and elderly. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINTS FELIX, PRIEST, AND ADAUCTUS, MARTYRS (d. 303 AD): During the fierce persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian, Saint Felix, a Roman priest, was arrested and condemned to death for his unwavering faith. As he was led to execution, an unknown Christian in the crowd was so moved by his courage that he cried out his own faith in Christ. He was immediately seized and executed alongside Felix. Because his name was unknown, he was called Adauctus (“the one added on”). Their joint martyrdom one a priest, the other a layman shows the unity of the Church in suffering and glory. Their relics were venerated in Rome and later spread to various churches across Europe. Their courage reminds us that the faith is worth more than life itself.

PRAYER: Almighty God, by the witness of Saints Felix and Adauctus, You strengthened the Church in times of persecution. Grant us courage to confess Your Name without fear. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT FIACRE, HERMIT (d. 670 AD): Saint Fiacre was born in Ireland and raised in a monastery, where he grew in prayer, knowledge, and holiness. Seeking solitude, he became a hermit, later moving to France where Saint Faro, Bishop of Meaux, gave him land. Through prayer and hard labor, Fiacre miraculously cleared the land and cultivated a garden that provided food and healing herbs. Known for his miracles of healing, he founded a hospice for travelers and a monastery for disciples who followed him. He lived a life of deep penance, prayer, and service, drawing many to Christ through his humility and compassion. After his death around 670, devotion to him spread widely. In later centuries, pilgrims visited his shrine for healing. Because of his love of gardening, he became patron saint of gardeners, florists, herbalists, and cabdrivers.

PRAYER: Lord God, You granted Saint Fiacre the gift of healing and the grace of holy solitude. Through his intercession, bless those who work the land and all who seek healing of body and soul. Amen. 🙏🏾

Heavenly Father, on this holy Sunday as we contemplate the cost of true discipleship, we bring our prayers before You in humble trust. Through the intercession of Saint Jeanne Jugan, we pray for the destitute, abandoned, and lonely elderly across the world; grant them comfort, dignity, and loving care, and bless all who serve them with patient, compassionate hearts. Through the prayers of Saints Felix and Adauctus, grant holy boldness to all persecuted Christians and give us the strength to stand firm for the Gospel without fear of human judgment. Through the intercession of Saint Fiacre, we pray for herbalists, gardeners, healthcare workers, and all who seek physical or spiritual healing from chronic illnesses. Lord, grant our Holy Father, Bishops, Priests, and Religious the grace to preach the power of the Cross with clarity and zeal. Transform our hearts by the Holy Spirit, that we may deny ourselves, carry our daily crosses with joy, and find our ultimate reward in You. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽
