Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, on the Memorial of Saint Pius X, Pope, the Gospel reminds us that the whole Law and the Prophets depend on two greatest commandments: to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. As we enter day four of our Novena to Saint Monica, we join our prayers with hers for the spiritual resurrection, conversion, and return to the sacraments of our children and loved ones. Today, we also honor Our Lady of Knock, who appeared in silent comfort to fifteen witnesses in County Mayo, Ireland, revealing the Lamb of God and directing us toward the Holy Mass, and Saint Pius X, Pope, the Pope of the Eucharist, who sought to “renew all things in Christ” by lowering the age of First Communion and defending the purity of the Catholic faith. Inspired by Our Lady and Saint Pius X, let us open our dry and weary hearts to the life-giving breath of the Holy Spirit.

“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

“When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking, ‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.'”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In today’s Gospel, Jesus responds to a scholar of the law by distilling the entirety of Sacred Scripture into two inseparable pillars: love of God and love of neighbor. When tested by the Pharisees, Christ cuts through centuries of legalistic debate to reveal that true righteousness is not found in mechanical observance, but in total interior devotion. To love God with all our heart, soul, and mind requires an undivided allegiance that penetrates every decision, thought, and affection. Furthermore, Jesus elevates love of neighbor to equal standing, declaring that genuine devotion to God must overflow into active charity toward others. By establishing that “the whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments,” Christ makes clear that any religious practice devoid of love is empty, calling us to live a faith rooted in wholehearted devotion to God and compassionate service to those around us.

In the First Reading, the prophet Ezekiel is brought in the Spirit to a valley filled with dry bones, a powerful representation of an Israel stripped of hope, vitality, and spiritual life. Yet, through the prophesying of God’s word and the breathing of the Holy Spirit, the dry bones rattle, come together, and are raised up as a living, standing army. The Responsorial Psalm echoes this dynamic of divine intervention with the joyful acclaim of Psalm 107: “Give thanks to the Lord; his love is everlasting.” No matter how desolate, dead, or helpless our spiritual condition may seem, God possesses the power to breathe His life-giving Spirit into our souls, restoring hope and reviving our weary hearts.

Together, these readings offer a profound message of spiritual resurrection through divine love. We cannot fulfill the command to love God and neighbor purely by human strength; our weak, “dry” human nature requires the animating breath of the Holy Spirit. When we allow God’s Spirit to revive our hearts, our dry bones come alive, empowering us to love God without reserve and to serve our neighbors with genuine self-giving charity.

Are your spiritual limbs dry and weary, or are you allowing the Holy Spirit to breathe fresh life into your devotion to God and love for others? May we open our hearts to the breath of God today, allowing His love to restore us and guide our every action.

Heavenly Father, You are the author of life and the source of all true love. Forgive us for the times our hearts have grown cold and dry like the bones in the valley, or when we have reduced Your holy commandments to empty routine. Breathe Your Holy Spirit into our souls, revival our weary spirits, and fill us with an ardent love for You with all our heart, soul, and mind. Grant us the grace to see Christ in our neighbors and to love them with selflessness and mercy, so that our lives may bear witness to Your everlasting goodness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

OUR LADY OF KNOCK: On August 21, 1879, Our Lady appeared at the parish church in Knock, Ireland, alongside Saint Joseph, Saint John the Evangelist, and an altar bearing the Lamb of God and the Cross. Witnessed by fifteen people during a time of hardship, Our Lady spoke no words, yet her silent presence offered profound hope, comfort, and a reminder of the central mystery of the Eucharist. The site quickly became a place of miraculous healings and pilgrimage, eventually raised to the status of a Basilica by Pope John Paul II. While Ireland formally celebrates her feast on August 17 to accommodate Saint Pius X, her miraculous apparition on August 21 continues to draw millions to seek her maternal care. She is invoked as the Queen of Ireland and Comfort of the Afflicted.

PRAYER: Our Lady of Knock, Queen of Ireland, you gave hope and comfort to your people in a time of distress. Teach us to participate ever more reverently in the Holy Mass, deepen our love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, and pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT PIUS X, POPE: Pope Saint Pius X (1835–1914), born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto, was a humble pastor who rose from poverty to become the 259th Pope. Guided by his motto, “To renew all things in Christ,” he initiated major reforms across the Church, including the codification of Canon Law, liturgical renewal, and the promotion of Gregorian chant and daily Bible reading. Deeply devoted to the Holy Eucharist, he lowered the age of First Communion to seven and encouraged frequent reception of the Sacrament. He fiercely defended Catholic doctrine against Modernism and lived with remarkable simplicity, famously writing: “I was born poor, I have lived in poverty, and I wish to die poor.” Canonized in 1954, he is the Patron Saint of First Communicants, Pilgrims, and several Dioceses.

PRAYER: O God, to preserve the Catholic faith and renew all things in Christ, You filled Pope Saint Pius X with heavenly wisdom and apostolic fortitude. Grant that by following his teaching and example, we may love the Holy Eucharist, remain steadfast in the truth, and reach eternal life with You. Amen. 🙏🏽
