Greetings and blessings, beloved family!
Today, Saturday of the Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time, we thank the good Lord for the gift of this day! During this month of August, we entrust our lives, our plans, our fears, and our dreams into God’s loving hands. We pray that this month will be filled with divine blessings, new opportunities, and the strength to overcome every challenge that may come our way.
We pray and celebrate with those marking birthdays, anniversaries, new jobs, weddings, and other joyful milestones this August. May this be a month of peace for the anxious, healing for the sick, comfort for the brokenhearted, and provision for the needy. As we walk through the days ahead, may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ go before us, the love of God surround us, and the wisdom of the Holy Spirit guide every decision we make. May this month bring us closer to holiness, deeper in faith, and stronger in hope. In all things, may God’s name be paised. Amen🙏🏽
PRAYER FOR THE BEGINNING OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR | https://dailyreflectionswithphilomena.com/prayer-for-the-beginning-of-a-new-school-year/
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” ~ Proverbs 3:5-6
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” ~ James 1:5
On this feast day, as our children and children all over the world begin the new school year, with special intention through the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, and the Saints, we pray for their safety and well-being, especially those beginning the new school year. May God grant them the ability to accept one another and courage to stand against any form of violence in treating others and courage to face new challenges and wisdom to make good choices. We pray for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding and for God’s guidance and protection upon them during this school year and always. We pray for safe travels, to and from school. We also pray for all teachers, staff and parents, and guardians. May the good Lord provide for those in need. And we continue to pray for peace, love, and unity in our families and our world. May God keep us all safe and well. Amen 🙏🏽
May Saint Joseph of Cupertino, Patron Saint of Students intercede for all students. Amen 🙏🏽
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” ~ Matthew 5:4
We remember in prayer all who began this journey of life with us but are no longer here. We especially pray for our loved ones who have recently died, that the Lord receive them into the light of Eternal Kingdom.
PRAYER FOR THE DEAD: In your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust our brothers and sisters. In this life, you embraced them with your tender love; deliver them now from every evil, and bid them eternal rest. The old order has passed away: welcome them into paradise, where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain, but fullness of peace and joy with your Son & the Holy Spirit forever & ever. Amen🙏🏽
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their gentle souls through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace with our Lord Jesus Christ… Amen 🙏🏽 ✝️🕯️✝️🕯️✝️🕯️
With special intention through the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, and the Saints, we continue to humbly pray for the well-being and safety of all parents, grandparents and the elderly. SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS:
Bible Readings for today’s Holy Mass, Saturday of the Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time | USCCB | https://bible.usccb.org/daily-bible-reading
Today’s Bible Readings: Saturday of the Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time | August 16, 2025
Reading 1: Joshua 24:14–29
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 16:1–2a, 5, 7–8, 11
Gospel: Matthew 19:13–15
Gospel Reading ~ Matthew 19:13–15
“Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these”
“Children were brought to Jesus that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” After he placed his hands on them, he went away.”
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus wanted to welcome the children whom the parents brought to him for a blessing, but the disciples were turning the children away. Perhaps they thought that Jesus only had time for adults. However, they complete misread Jesus who replied to them, ‘Let the little children alone, and do not stop them coming to me’. Jesus wanted children to be central to the life of the community He was gathering about Himself. He would want them to be central to the life and worship of the church. Jesus goes on to declare in the Gospel reading that the kingdom of God belongs to them as much as to anyone else. They have the same right to receive the gift of the kingdom of God as adults. Jesus wants them to be blessed by God who is working powerfully through Him. The risen Lord wants us all to open up the riches of the Gospel to children. Unlike the disciples in the Gospel reading, He wants us, His disciples today, to bring children to Himself for prayer and worship. He wants us to help children to come to know Him as a friend, so that they can draw strength from His loving presence to them all through their lives.
In our Gospel today, we see the tenderness of Christ’s heart. While the disciples tried to shield Jesus from what they saw as a distraction, He welcomed the children with open arms. His words remind us that the Kingdom of heaven belongs to those who are like children pure, trusting, humble, and receptive. Jesus does not measure greatness by power or influence but by childlike dependence on God. The blessing He gives these children reveals the Father’s desire that every soul approach Him in simplicity and trust. Jesus’ words and actions in today’s Gospel place an onus on all of us to do whatever we can to bring children and young people to Jesus, to open them up to the riches of the Gospel and of the whole Christian tradition. As a sign of how central children are to God’s kingdom and to the community of believers Jesus went on to lay His hands on them in blessing. We are all called to be channels of the Lord’s blessing to our children.
The first reading from the book of Joshua captures a pivotal moment in Israel’s history. Joshua challenges the people to make a firm choice: either serve the Lord or turn back to false gods. His own response remains clear and unwavering “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” The people echo his declaration, recalling the Lord’s mighty deeds in their lives. This passage invites us to examine our own fidelity. Do we serve God wholeheartedly, or are we divided in loyalty, clinging to worldly idols of comfort, pride, or self-interest? Joshua reminds us that faith is a covenant requiring both memory and commitment.
The Responsorial Psalm deepens this theme of trust and surrender. The psalmist prays, “You are my inheritance, O Lord,” acknowledging God as the true portion and lasting joy. Even in the night, when fears or doubts may arise, the Lord counsels and strengthens those who keep Him before their eyes. It is in God alone that we find security, peace, and the path to eternal life.
As we reflect on the words of the Sacred Scriptures today, together, these readings call us to renew our commitment to God with the simplicity of children and the resolve of Joshua. To enter the Kingdom, we must set aside pride, trust wholly in God, and live as witnesses of His love. Reflecting on today’s Word, we might ask: Do I approach God with the humility and openness of a child? Are there idols or distractions in my life competing for my loyalty? Can I boldly declare with Joshua, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord”? Do I truly believe, like the psalmist, that God alone is my inheritance, my joy, and my security? May God in His infinite grace and mercy, grant us His grace as we remain faithful and continue to serve Him in spirit and in truth.🙏🏽
Lord Jesus, You welcomed the little children and blessed them with Your tender love. Teach me to come before You with the same trust and humility, free from pride and self-reliance. Like Joshua, may I serve You wholeheartedly, renouncing every false god that draws me away from You. Be my inheritance, my portion, and my joy, O Lord, now and forever. Amen. 🙏🏾
MEMORIAL OF SAINT STEPHEN OF HUNGARY, KING AND SAINT ROCH (ROCCO), CONFESSOR ~ FEAST DAY – AUGUST 16TH: Today, the Church honors two remarkable saints who witnessed to Christ through leadership and mercy: Saint Stephen of Hungary, King (Patron of Hungary, Kings, Bricklayers, and Stonecutters), and Saint Roch (Rocco), Confessor (Patron of the Sick, Invalids, Dogs, and those suffering from plagues and epidemics). Their lives, though different in vocation, remind us that holiness can be lived in both the palace and the wilderness, in governing a nation or in serving the afflicted. Through their intercession, we pray for the sick and dying, especially those suffering from heart, lung, and skin diseases, cancers, and epidemics; for those seeking life partners, that God may bless them with loving and faith-filled companions; for workers, the unemployed, and the poor and needy; for peace, love, justice, and unity in our families and the world. We also lift up our Holy Father, the bishops, clergy, and religious, asking for an increase in holy vocations, the protection of persecuted Christians, and the conversion of sinners everywhere. 🙏🏾

SAINT STEPHEN OF HUNGARY, KING: Born Vajk in 975, Saint Stephen was the son of Duke Geza of Hungary and Sarolt, both of whom had recently embraced Christianity. Baptized by Saint Adalbert of Prague, Stephen grew up in the faith and was prepared for both leadership and holiness. Upon succeeding his father in 997, Stephen zealously pursued the conversion of Hungary, building churches, inviting missionaries, and establishing Christian laws. In the year 1000, Pope Sylvester II crowned him King of Hungary, sending him a royal crown that is still preserved as a national treasure. Stephen consecrated his kingdom to the Blessed Virgin Mary, earning the title of “Apostolic King.” He worked tirelessly to spread the Gospel, care for the poor, and establish justice.
Stephen’s later years were marked by trials, including the death of his only son, Saint Emeric, and disputes over succession. Yet, he remained faithful to God until his death on August 15, 1038, the Solemnity of the Assumption, to whom he entrusted his people and kingdom. Canonized in 1083, Saint Stephen remains a model of Christian kingship, humility, and devotion to Mary.
PRAYER: Almighty God, You strengthened Saint Stephen of Hungary to build a kingdom rooted in the Gospel. Through his intercession, grant that we too may live in justice, charity, and unwavering faith. Amen. 🙏🏾
SAINT ROCH (ROCCO), CONFESSOR: Born in Montpellier, France, around 1295, Saint Roch was marked by a miraculous red cross on his chest, a sign of God’s favor. After the death of his parents, he gave away his inheritance to the poor and set out as a pilgrim. Along his journey through Italy, he encountered plague-stricken towns and became renowned for curing the sick with the sign of the Cross. Eventually, Roch himself contracted the plague and withdrew to a forest, where he was miraculously sustained by a nobleman’s dog who brought him bread and licked his wounds until he healed. After recovering, Roch lived in humility and obscurity, eventually being imprisoned as a suspected spy in his hometown, where he died in 1327. After his death, miracles multiplied at his tomb, and devotion to him spread rapidly across Europe, especially during outbreaks of plague.
PRAYER TO SAINT ROCH: O Blessed Saint Roch, Patron of the sick, you healed many by your prayers and the sign of the Cross. Intercede for all who suffer from illness in body or soul, that they may find comfort, healing, and peace in Christ the Divine Physician. Amen. 🙏🏾

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF AUGUST | MONTH OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY: August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, inviting us to reflect on her pure love, deep sorrow, and unwavering obedience to God. Her heart, aflame with charity and pierced by suffering, mirrors the life of Christ and calls us to follow Him more closely through her example. This month, the Church encourages us to console her sorrowful heart and grow in holiness through prayers like the Rosary, the Litany of the Immaculate Heart, and the First Saturday Devotion. Through Mary’s heart, we are led ever closer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
“O Immaculate Heart of Mary, be our refuge and the way that leads us to God.”
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us and draw us into deeper love and trust in your Son. Amen🙏🏽

PRAYER INTENTIONS: Heavenly Father, we pray for the Church, that like Joshua, she may remain steadfast in renewing her covenant with You and guiding Your people with courage and fidelity. We pray for all leaders of nations, through the intercession of Saint Stephen of Hungary, that they may govern with wisdom, humility, and a spirit of service rooted in justice and faith. We remember the sick, the poor, and all who suffer, through the intercession of Saint Roch, that they may find healing, compassion, and comfort in Your mercy. We pray for parents, children, and families everywhere, inspired by the Gospel, that they may welcome the kingdom of God with childlike trust and openness of heart.
LET US PRAY:
My tender Lord, You welcome all people to share in Your grace. You welcome every child and every child of God to share in Your loving embrace. Please extend that welcome to me and help me to accept this gift of Your infinite love. And help me to become a better instrument of Your love toward others, never interfering or preventing them from turning to You. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen 🙏🏽
Lord God, You are our portion and our inheritance, the One in whom we take refuge. As Joshua called Israel to choose You above all else, strengthen our resolve to serve You faithfully in every season of life. Through the prayers of Saints Stephen and Roch, grant us wisdom to lead, compassion to serve, and simplicity of heart to trust You fully. May our lives bear witness to Your love, so that others may be drawn into the joy of Your kingdom. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽
