Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, on the Feast of Saint Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr, Jesus reminds us in the Gospel that “unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” True life in Christ requires letting go of selfish security to allow His grace to bear fruit through us. As Saint Paul reminds us, “God loves a cheerful giver,” and the Psalmist echoes that the righteous give lavishly to those in need. This call to joyful self-giving shines brilliantly in the life of Saint Lawrence, who famously presented Rome’s poor, sick, and suffering to his persecutors as the true treasures of the Church before laying down his life with unwavering courage and joy. Today, we also enter Day 5 of the Novena to Our Lady of the Assumption and Day 9 of the Novena to Saint Philomena, may the Lord graciously hear our intentions, accept our petitions, and grant us the grace to surrender our lives cheerfully in His service.

Today’s Bible Readings for Monday, August 10, 2026 | Feast of Saint Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr
Reading 1: 2 Corinthians 9:6-10
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 112:1-2, 5-6, 7-8, 9
Gospel: John 12:24-28 (or John 12:24-26)

Gospel Reading ~ John 12:24-26

“Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.”

“Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.'”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In today’s Gospel, Jesus uses a striking image from nature to explain the true meaning of discipleship and self-sacrifice: “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.” To follow Christ requires us to let go of our selfish grip on life, comfort, and worldly preservation. When we surrender our own desires and allow ourselves to “die” to sin and ego, God works through our sacrifice to produce a rich harvest of grace, love, and eternal fruit. Serving Christ means walking the path He walked, a path where true life is found precisely in losing it for His sake.

In the First Reading, Saint Paul reminds the Corinthians that “whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully,” emphasizing that God loves a cheerful giver and provides us with every grace so that we can abound in good works. This spirit of radical generosity and joyful self-giving is mirrored in the Responsorial Psalm, which praises the one who is gracious, lends to those in need, and lavishly gives to the poor. The Psalmist assures us that the righteous person’s heart is firm and trusting in the Lord, and their generosity will endure forever.

Together, these readings capture the very heart of Saint Lawrence’s martyrdom and witness: a life poured out completely in love for God and neighbor. Just as a seed must be buried in the earth to bring forth new life, Saint Lawrence surrendered his physical life on a gridiron, only to reap an everlasting harvest of glory in heaven. Are you holding tightly onto your own comforts, or are you willing to let go like a fallen grain of wheat so that God’s grace can bear fruit through you? May we learn to give cheerfully, live courageously, and follow Christ wherever He leads.

Heavenly Father, You are the source of all seeds, all harvests, and all grace. Give us the courage to let go of our selfish attachments and surrender our lives into Your hands, just like a grain of wheat falling into the earth. When trials or sacrifices come our way, help us to bear them with cheerful hearts, knowing that true life is found only in serving You. Through the intercession of Saint Lawrence, make us generous givers to the poor and steadfast witnesses of Your love. We place our lives, our struggles, and our harvest into Your care. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINTS OF THE DAY | AUGUST 10TH:

Direct link to the detailed history of Saint Lawrence | https://dailyreflectionswithphilomena.com/saints-of-the-day-feast-day-august-10th/

SAINT LAWRENCE, DEACON, AND MARTYR: Born in Spain around 225 A.D., Lawrence came to Rome where Pope St. Sixtus II appointed him Archdeacon, responsible for the Church’s treasures and almsgiving. In 258, during Emperor Valerian’s persecution, Pope Sixtus and six other deacons were martyred. Lawrence, the last of the seven, was ordered to surrender the Church’s wealth. Given three days, he distributed all to the poor and then presented the city’s sick, crippled, and needy to the prefect, declaring, “These are the treasures of the Church.” For this bold witness, he was condemned to be burned alive on a gridiron. Even in agony, he kept his faith and humor, saying, “Turn me over, I am done on this side.” His courage converted many, and his death on August 10, 258, became a source of inspiration for Christians in Rome and beyond.

PRAYER: O God, giver of that ardor of love for You by which Saint Lawrence was outstandingly faithful in service and glorious in martyrdom, grant that we may love what he loved and practice what he taught. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏾
