Greetings and blessings, beloved family!
Today, as we enter Tuesday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time, the Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint John Vianney (the Curé of Ars), Priest and Patron of All Priests, alongside Blessed Frédéric Janssoone, Priest. In today’s Gospel, Jesus redirects our focus from external traditions to the true state of our hearts, reminding us that authentic holiness flows from an upright and converted heart. This call to interior purity and selfless service is beautifully embodied in the lives of the holy priests we honor today. Saint John Vianney, through radical penance, humility, and tireless hours in the confessional, transformed the village of Ars and drew thousands back to God. Blessed Frédéric Janssoone, driven by Franciscan missionary zeal, spent his life revitalizing devotion to the Holy Land and serving the poor with untiring joy. Together with Jeremiah’s prophecy of God’s healing restoration, today’s saints remind us that when we allow God to cleanse and shepherd our hearts, He can perform miracles of grace through our lives.

Today’s Bible Readings for Tuesday, August 4, 2026 | Memorial of Saint John Vianney, Priest
Reading 1: Jeremiah 30:1-2, 12-15, 18-22
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 102:16-18, 19-21, 29, 22-23
Gospel: Matthew 14:22-36 or Matthew 15:1-2, 10-14
Gospel Reading ~ Matthew 15:1-2, 10-14
“He summoned the crowd and said to them, ‘Hear and understand. It is not what enters one’s mouth that defiles the man; but what comes out of the mouth is what defiles one.’”
“Some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, ‘Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands when they eat a meal.’ He summoned the crowd and said to them, ‘Hear and understand. It is not what enters one’s mouth that defiles the man; but what comes out of the mouth is what defiles one.’ Then his disciples approached and said to him, ‘Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?’ He said in reply, ‘Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.'”
SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS
In today’s Gospel, Jesus shifts our focus from external religious rituals to the true condition of our hearts. When the Pharisees criticize the disciples for ignoring ceremonial handwashing traditions, Jesus reminds the crowd that genuine holiness is not about mere external appearances or human customs. Rather, it is the words, thoughts, and intentions that overflow from our hearts that reveal who we truly are. Jesus warns against hypocritical, external religiosity and cautions us against following “blind guides,” calling us instead to root our lives in the authentic truth planted by the Heavenly Father.
In the First Reading, the Lord speaks through the prophet Jeremiah about both the deep pain of sin and the ultimate promise of divine restoration. Although Israel experiences the heavy consequences of unfaithfulness, God promises a glorious future: “I will restore the tents of Jacob… From them will resound songs of praise, the laughter of happy men.” God acknowledges our spiritual wounds, but He promises to heal, rebuild, and renew His people, declaring once more: “You shall be my people, and I will be your God.” The Responsorial Psalm echoes this joyous expectation, proclaiming, “The Lord will build up Zion again, and appear in all his glory… When he has regarded the prayer of the destitute.”
Today’s readings call us to cultivate inner purity and seek true conversion of heart. On this Memorial of Saint John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests who spent countless hours in the confessional bringing souls back to God, we are invited to inspect what comes out of our own hearts, our words, judgments, and desires. May we turn away from superficial religiosity, allow the Lord to uproot any blind spots in our lives, and trust in His power to heal and restore our souls.
Heavenly Father, You desire truth and purity in the hidden depths of our hearts. Forgive us for the times we focus on outward appearances while neglecting the spiritual state of our souls. Cleanse our hearts of all bitterness, harsh speech, and pride, and help us produce words and actions that reflect Your love. Give us wise and holy shepherds to guide us, and grant us the grace to remain firmly rooted in Your truth. We place our lives, our families, and our cares into Your loving hands. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT JOHN VIANNEY (1786–1859): Born in Dardilly, France, John Vianney grew up during the anti-religious turmoil of the French Revolution. Though he struggled academically especially with Latin his deep love for the Church and his desire to become a priest kept him persevering. He was eventually ordained, and in 1818, he was assigned to the small and spiritually indifferent village of Ars. With radical humility and intense personal sacrifice, the Curé of Ars transformed his parish through preaching, penance, and especially his work in the confessional. He would hear confessions for up to 16 hours a day, and thousands came from across France to seek his spiritual guidance. He lived simply, prayed constantly, and fasted often, desiring nothing more than to lead souls to God. His spiritual insight and miracles led to his canonization in 1925.
PRAYER: Saint John Vianney, devoted shepherd and tireless confessor, intercede for all priests to remain faithful to their calling. May your example of humility, prayer, and sacrifice inspire us to love God deeply and serve others selflessly. Amen.🙏🏾
BLESSED FRÉDÉRIC JANSSOONE (1838–1916): Born in France nearly 50 years after Saint John Vianney, Frédéric Janssoone joined the Franciscans and became a missionary in the Holy Land. There, he worked to revive the Latin Catholic presence and served as a bridge between the Eastern and Western Christian communities. He later moved to Canada and became instrumental in the promotion of Marian devotion at the shrine of Our Lady of the Cape and in re-establishing the Franciscan presence in Quebec. Known for his eloquence, missionary zeal, and love for the poor, he brought thousands closer to Christ. In every mission, he combined deep faith with practical service organizing pilgrimages, publishing devotional literature, and ministering tirelessly to all who came his way.
PRAYER: Blessed Frédéric Janssoone, you walked in the footsteps of Saint Francis and spread the Gospel with gentleness and joy. Help us to trust in God’s plan and serve others with love, wherever we are called. Amen. 🙏🏾

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF AUGUST | MONTH OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY: August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, inviting us to reflect on her pure love, deep sorrow, and unwavering obedience to God. Her heart, aflame with charity and pierced by suffering, mirrors the life of Christ and calls us to follow Him more closely through her example. This month, the Church encourages us to console her sorrowful heart and grow in holiness through prayers like the Rosary, the Litany of the Immaculate Heart, and the First Saturday Devotion. Through Mary’s heart, we are led ever closer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
“O Immaculate Heart of Mary, be our refuge and the way that leads us to God.”
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us and draw us into deeper love and trust in your Son. Amen. 🙏🏽

We pray for God’s grace and mercy as we anchor ourselves in the steady, life-giving rhythm of Ordinary Time. May the profound mysteries of the Cross, the cleansing power of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, and the enduring fire of the Holy Spirit continue to help us seek You in every moment of our lives. May the peace, hope, and divine communion that flow from the Heart of our Redeemer shape our steps, inform our decisions, and strengthen our resolve to live each day in the light of Christ and the daily guidance of the Advocate. As we journey onward through the rest of this month, may God bless our families and loved ones, and may His light continue to shine brightly in every home. Let us draw closer to God and be renewed through the joy of the Gospel, the gifts of the Spirit, and generosity to the poor. May God keep us all safe and well during these challenging times.
