Greetings and blessings, beloved family!
Today, the Church celebrates the Thursday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time, alongside the Memorial of Saint Bridget of Sweden, Religious, and Saint Liborius, Bishop. Today’s liturgy challenges us to turn away from the world’s “broken cisterns” and open our spiritual eyes to the mysteries of the Kingdom, drinking deeply from Christ, the inexhaustible fountain of life. This holy surrender shines brightly in Saint Bridget, who contemplated the Lord’s Passion and gave her life to prayer, charity, and Church renewal, as well as in Saint Liborius, who shepherd his flock with peaceful zeal and enduring pastoral love. May we abandon empty distractions today, open our hearts to divine wisdom, and walk as faithful witnesses of the Gospel.

Today’s Bible Readings for Thursday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time | July 23, 2026
Reading 1: Jeremiah 2:1-3, 7-8, 12-13
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 36:6-7ab, 8-9, 10-11
Gospel: Matthew 13:10-17
Gospel Reading ~ Matthew 13:10-17
“But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear.”
“The disciples approached Jesus and said, “Why do you speak to the crowd in parables?” He said to them in reply, “Because knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted. To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand. Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: You shall indeed hear but not understand, you shall indeed look but never see. Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and be converted and I heal them. “But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.””
SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS
In today’s Gospel, Jesus responds to His disciples’ inquiry regarding why He speaks to the crowds in parables, revealing a profound truth about human dispositions and divine revelation. Parables are not merely engaging stories or simple moral lessons; rather, they serve as a spiritual threshold that either reveals or veils the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven. For those with humble, open, and receptive hearts, parables unlock rich depths of divine wisdom. Conversely, for those whose hearts have grown callous, self-righteous, or indifferent, the parables remain obscure. Citing the ancient prophecy of Isaiah, Jesus explains that spiritual blindness and deafness are not arbitrary penalties imposed by God, but the tragic result of people willfully closing their eyes and hardening their hearts against conversion and divine healing.
Jesus contrasts this stubborn insensibility with the extraordinary privilege granted to His followers, declaring, “Blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear.” He reminds them that generations of righteous men, patriarchs, and prophets throughout salvation history longed intensely to behold the fulfillment of God’s promises and to hear the voice of the Messiah, yet did not. In Christ, the long-awaited light has dawned, and the mysteries of God’s reign are made active and present. This passage calls us to recognize the invaluable gift of our faith, urging us never to take for granted the spiritual sight and understanding granted to us through the Gospel and the Holy Spirit.
In the first reading, the prophet Jeremiah delivers a poignant and sobering message from the Lord, highlighting Israel’s tragic fall from covenant fidelity into spiritual apostasy. God affectionately recalls the youthful devotion of His people—how they loved Him as a bride and followed Him faithfully through the unsown wilderness of Sinai. Yet, once brought into the rich and fertile “garden land,” Israel defiled God’s inheritance and turned to useless idols. Jeremiah pinpoints two great evils committed by the nation: they abandoned the Lord, who is the inexhaustible “fountain of living waters,” and attempted to dig for themselves “broken cisterns that hold no water.” This striking metaphor exposes the utter foolishness of turning away from the source of divine life to chase fragile, worldly substitutes that inevitably leave the human soul parched and empty.
The Responsorial Psalm provides the perfect antidote to Jeremiah’s lament, exultantly proclaiming: “With you is the fountain of life, O Lord.” The psalmist praises God’s infinite mercy, unshakeable faithfulness, and divine justice, inviting all people to take refuge under the shadow of His wings and drink deeply from His delightful stream. In a world filled with cracked and leaky cisterns, the psalm reminds us that true light, life, and spiritual satisfaction are found exclusively in God’s presence; it is only in His divine light that we truly see light. When we ground our lives in His mercy, our deepest thirst is quenched, and our souls are preserved from the deceptive promises of the world.
Reflecting on the Sacred Scriptures today, we are invited to conduct an honest audit of our spiritual lives. Are we actively drinking from Christ, the living fountain, through daily prayer, Scripture, and a life of grace, or have we been trying to satisfy our inner thirst with the “broken cisterns” of worldly success, self-reliance, or material security? Are our spiritual eyes and ears truly tuned to the gentle voice of the Lord, or have our hearts become dull due to routine, anxiety, or busyness? Today, let us ask for the grace of a refreshed and contrite heart, cherishing the immense privilege of knowing Christ and returning whole-heartedly to the One who heals, restores, and satisfies us.
Lord Jesus, You are the Fountain of Living Waters, the Light of the World, and the fulfillment of every divine promise. Forgive us for the times we have turned away from Your presence to seek satisfaction in the broken, empty cisterns of worldly pursuits. Soften our hearts, open our eyes to see Your truth, and unstop our ears to hear Your voice calling us to deeper conversion. Grant us the grace to treasure the gift of Your Gospel and to walk confidently in Your light, drinking deeply from the inexhaustible stream of Your mercy. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT BRIDGET OF SWEDEN, RELIGIOUS: Born in 1303 into a noble Swedish family, Saint Bridget was known from childhood for her deep devotion to Christ, especially His Passion. At the age of ten, she had a vivid vision of Jesus on the Cross, which pierced her heart and became the foundation of her lifelong prayer and mission. Married at sixteen to Prince Ulfo of Nericia, she raised eight children, including Saint Catherine of Sweden, while leading a life of holiness, charity, and hospitality. After her husband’s death, Bridget renounced her royal status, lived in austerity, and founded the Order of the Most Holy Savior (Bridgettines) under divine inspiration.
Called by God, she journeyed to Rome and later to the Holy Land, interceding tirelessly for the reform of the Church and the renewal of Christian life. She received numerous mystical revelations, particularly concerning the sufferings of Christ and the sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These were compiled as the Revelations of Saint Bridget, still spiritually rich and widely read today. Saint Bridget died in Rome in 1373 and was canonized in 1391. In 1999, Pope John Paul II named her co-patroness of Europe, honoring her role in uniting faith and charity amid political and ecclesial turmoil.
“True wisdom consists in works, not in great talents, which the world admires. The wise in the world’s estimation are often those who set aside the will of God.” – Saint Bridget of Sweden
PRAYER: O God, You revealed heavenly secrets to Saint Bridget as she meditated on the Passion of Your Son. Grant that we, Your servants, may imitate her devotion and one day rejoice with her in eternal glory. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽
SAINT LIBORIUS, BISHOP: Saint Liborius was a 4th-century bishop of Le Mans, France, and a faithful friend of Saint Martin of Tours. For 49 years, he led his diocese with zeal, ordaining hundreds of clergy and spreading the Gospel across Gaul. Known for his tireless pastoral care and peaceful demeanor, he built churches, preached with clarity, and served the sick with compassion. Miraculous healings particularly of those suffering from gallstones and related ailments were attributed to his intercession, leading to his veneration as a healer.
After his death in 397 AD, devotion to Saint Liborius flourished, especially in Paderborn, Germany, where his relics were enshrined in the 9th century. The friendship between Le Mans and Paderborn remains a symbol of ecclesial unity and peace his patronage includes reconciliation among peoples and peace in divided regions. His feast is celebrated annually with the Libori Festival, a week-long celebration in Paderborn that draws pilgrims from around the world.
PRAYER: O God of peace and healing, You raised up Saint Liborius to shepherd Your flock with wisdom and charity. Grant that through his prayers, we may be healed in body and soul and work for unity and peace in our world. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽
HONORING THE SAINTS OF THE DAY:
As we draw deep inspiration today from the profound mystical wisdom, noble leadership, and monastic devotion of Saint Bridget of Sweden, alongside the enduring episcopal grace and miraculous intercession of Saint Liborius, we also turn our hearts to the rest of the holy assembly sharing this July 23rd feast day. Today, we prayerfully honor and remember SAINT ANNE, SAINT APOLLINARIS, SAINT JOHN CASSIAN, THE MARTYRS OF BULGARIA, SAINTS RASYPHUS AND RAVENNUS, SAINT ROMLUA, SAINTS TROPHIMUS & THEOPHILUS, AND SAINT VALERIAN. Spanning across different eras, from foundational figures of the early Church and pioneering monastic theologians like John Cassian to steadfast ancient martyrs and courageous witnesses, their diverse lives all beautifully reflect the multifaceted grace of God. Remembering them reminds us that we belong to an incredibly vast family of faith, encouraging us to follow their example and walk our own path toward holiness with confidence today.

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF JULY | MONTH OF THE MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD OF JESUS: July is dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ a profound devotion that honors the redeeming power of Christ’s Blood shed for our salvation. Flowing from His Sacred Heart, this Blood is the price of our redemption, the source of grace in the sacraments, and the seal of the New Covenant. It reminds us that salvation was not won lightly, but through the ultimate sacrifice of love. This month, the Church invites us to meditate on the infinite value of Christ’s Blood poured out during His Passion from Gethsemane to Calvary and in every celebration of the Holy Eucharist. We are called to offer acts of reparation for the sins of the world and to intercede for the conversion of souls. Devotions such as the Litany of the Precious Blood, the Chaplet of the Precious Blood, and daily consecration to the Precious Blood help deepen our union with Christ crucified.
As Saint John Chrysostom once said, “The Precious Blood is the salvation of souls; it purifies, sanctifies, and strengthens.” In our trials, let us take refuge beneath the cross, trusting in the Blood that speaks of mercy, victory, and eternal life.
“Precious Blood of Jesus, save us and the whole world.”
O Most Precious Blood of Jesus, fountain of salvation, we adore You. Wash us clean of sin, protect us from evil, and draw us into deeper love and union with You. Amen. 🙏🏽

We pray for the repose of the gentle souls of our loved ones and souls of all the faithful departed. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their gentle souls through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace with our Lord Jesus Christ… Amen 🙏🏽
Thanking God for His love and the gift of this glorious day, we offer Him a prayer of gratitude for the graces of the past months and entrust this month of July to His loving providence. We pray for God’s grace and mercy as we anchor ourselves in the steady, life-giving rhythm of Ordinary Time. May the profound mysteries of the Cross, the cleansing power of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, and the enduring fire of the Holy Spirit continue to help us seek You in every moment of our lives. May the peace, hope, and divine communion that flow from the Heart of our Redeemer shape our steps, inform our decisions, and strengthen our resolve to live each day in the light of Christ and the daily guidance of the Advocate. As we journey onward through the rest of this month, may God bless our families and loved ones, and may His light continue to shine brightly in every home. Let us draw closer to God and be renewed through the joy of the Gospel, the gifts of the Spirit, and generosity to the poor. May God keep us all safe and well during these challenging times. Wishing us all a spiritually enriching, most blessed, and grace-filled journey ahead. Amen. 🙏🏽
