Greetings and blessings, beloved family!
“You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation; announce the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” Alleluia! Today’s liturgy challenges us to examine the ultimate boundaries of our loyalty, contrasting the intense demands of discipleship with the blessings of divine hospitality. We are called to step out of comfortable religion and anchor our lives completely in Christ. This total surrender is personified by Saint Irenaeus of Lyons, the Doctor of Unity. As a disciple of Polycarp who was taught by Saint John, Irenaeus fiercely defended the true Incarnation against confusing heresies, eventually dying as a martyr to keep the Church united in apostolic truth. In the Gospel (Matthew 10:37–42), Christ sets an uncompromising standard: any earthly affection that eclipses Him makes us unworthy of His kingdom. He commands us to take up our cross and lose our lives for His sake, while promising that even a simple cup of cold water given to a disciple will be eternally rewarded. This is mirrored in the First Reading (2 Kings 4:8–16a), where a woman builds a room for the prophet Elisha and is miraculously rewarded with a son. The Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 89) exalts God’s eternal fidelity, while the Second Reading (Romans 6:3–11) provides our foundation: through baptism, we are buried with Christ so we can walk in radical newness of life, dead to sin and alive for God.
Are there relationships or personal comforts you are placing ahead of your loyalty to Christ? Do you actively make room for God’s presence in your daily schedule, or is your heart too cluttered with secular anxieties?

Today’s Bible Readings: Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time | June 28, 2026
Reading I: 2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 89:2-3, 16-17, 18-19
Reading II: Romans 6:3-4, 8-11
Gospel: Matthew 10:37-42
Gospel Reading ~ Matthew 10:37-42
“Whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
Jesus said to his apostles: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple—amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.”
SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS
In the Gospel, Christ issues an uncompromising ultimatum regarding discipleship, presenting The Absolute Priority of Divine Love and the Paradox of Radical Surrender. Directly confronting the deep, sacred bonds of family and the natural human instinct for self-preservation, Jesus establishes an unyielding standard: any earthly affection, even for a parent or a child, that eclipses devotion to Him renders a person entirely unworthy of His kingdom. He redefines life itself through the imagery of the cross, stripping away the illusion of comfortable faith and declaring that true spiritual vitality is found only through a sacrificial death to self. Yet, alongside this intense demand, Christ unfolds a beautiful theology of divine representation and micro-level hospitality. He reassures His followers that to welcome them is to welcome God Himself, promising that even the smallest, most hidden act of kindness, like offering a simple cup of cold water to a lowly disciple is meticulously recorded in the ledger of heaven and will never lose its eternal reward.
The First Reading provides a vivid historical model of this hospitable reverence, revealing The Generosity of the Shunammite Woman and the Prophetic Reward of Faithfulness. This woman of influence instinctively recognizes the holy presence of God in the prophet Elisha, moving beyond mere passive politeness to construct a dedicated, furnished rooftop room for his rest. Her selfless hospitality, driven by pure reverence rather than a desire for personal gain, does not go unnoticed by the divine economy. Penetrating her deep, unspoken ache of childlessness and the vulnerability of her aging husband, Elisha issues a startling, creative decree of life: a promise that against all natural odds, she would hold a newborn son within a year. Through her radical openness to God’s messenger, her barren reality is completely transformed, beautifully proving Christ’s Gospel promise that whoever receives a prophet precisely because he is a prophet will inevitably share in the prophet’s reward.
The Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 89) serves as the exultant liturgical bridge for this Sunday, singing: “Forever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.” It offers a passionate, unyielding voice of praise that perfectly anchors the theme of God’s unbreakable fidelity across all generations. The text celebrates the supreme reality that God’s kindness is established forever and confirmed in the very heavens, serving as the ultimate armor and shield for His people. It beautifully reinforces both the Gospel and the First Reading, reminding us that those who walk in the light of God’s countenance and recognize the joyful shout of His presence are exalted by His justice, finding their strength entirely in His divine favor.
The Second Reading provides the deep structural foundation for this radical new way of living, revealing The Sacramental Burial of Baptism and Resurrected Life in Christ. Saint Paul traces the profound spiritual architecture of Christian identity, demonstrating that baptism is not a shallow ritual, but a real, corporate immersion into the death and burial of Jesus. By dying to the tyrannical reign of sin once and for all, the believer is liberated from the ancient power of death. Paul shatters any notion of spiritual stagnation by declaring that just as Christ was raised by the glory of the Father, we too are empowered to walk in a vibrant newness of life. Consequently, we are commanded to look at ourselves through a completely new lens: completely dead to the pulls of sin, and radically alive for God in Christ Jesus.
As we step into our communities, workplaces, and relationships on this Lord’s day, let us honestly evaluate what holds the ultimate title to our loyalty and affection. Reflect today: When faced with the pressure to compromise your faith for the sake of family harmony, social approval, or personal comfort, do you protect your own life, or do you have the courage to lose it for Christ’s sake? Are you actively making room for God’s presence in your daily schedule, like the Shunammite woman built a room on her roof, or have you left Him no space amid your career and personal anxieties? How can you offer the “cup of cold water” of kindness, integrity, and bold Christian witness to the little ones in your life this week, trusting that no small act of faithfulness escapes the eye of the Father?
Let us pray: Lord God of Hosts, King of Glory and Source of All Life, You are the ultimate prize and the only love worthy of our entire hearts. Forgive us for the times we have placed earthly relationships, material security, and personal comfort above our allegiance to You, and heal the cowardice that makes us shrink from taking up our daily crosses. We thank You for the incredible mystery of our baptism, which has buried our old history of sin and raised us up to walk in absolute newness of life. Teach us the holy art of hospitality today; open our hearts to recognize Your presence in the vulnerable, the simple, and the messengers You send into our lives. Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us, giving us the generous spirit of the Shunammite woman and the radical trust of the Apostles, so that we may unreservedly lose our lives for Your sake only to find them secure in Your eternal kingdom. Grant us the grace to live this week entirely dead to sin and vibrantly alive for You, confident that even our smallest sacrifices are seen and rewarded through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT IRENAEUS OF LYONS, BISHOP, MARTYR, AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH: Saint Irenaeus (c. 130–202 A.D.) was a brilliant second-century prelate, premier apologist, and one of the early Church’s most critical theologians. Born in Asia Minor, he was an astute disciple of Saint Polycarp, who himself was taught directly by Saint John the Evangelist, providing Irenaeus with a direct, authentic link to the pristine teachings of the Apostles. He was ordained a priest and sent to Rome to advise Pope Saint Eleutherius on the Montanist controversy before returning to Gaul to serve as the second Bishop of Lyons following the brutal martyrdom of Saint Pothinus. Irenaeus is best known for his monumental theological work, Against Heresies, written to fiercely combat Gnosticism—a dangerous error that claimed the material world was inherently evil and distorted redemption into a secret, purely spiritual knowledge (gnosis). He vigorously defended the goodness of physical creation, the reality of Christ’s human Incarnation, and serves as an invaluable early witness to the supreme authority of the Roman See and the Primacy of Peter. Serving as a vital spiritual bridge between the Christian East and West, he was martyred in 202 A.D. during the persecution of Emperor Septimius Severus. In recognition of his tireless defense of orthodox Catholic doctrine, Pope Francis declared him a Doctor of the Universal Church in 2022, granting him the title Doctor Unitatis (Doctor of Unity). He is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Mobile, Alabama.
PRAYER: God, You enabled Saint Irenaeus, Your Bishop, to strengthen the truth of faith and the peace of the Church. Through his powerful intercession, may we be completely renewed in divine faith and love, and always strive with our whole hearts to foster true unity and concord among all believers. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽
HONORING THE SAINTS OF THE DAY:
As we draw deep inspiration today from the brilliant theological wisdom, peace-weaving heart, and heroic witness of Saint Irenaeus of Lyons, we also lift our hearts to the entire holy assembly sharing this June 28th feast day. Today, we prayerfully honor and remember SAINT ALMUS, SAINT ARGYMIRUS, SAINT AUSTELL, SAINT BENIGNUS, SAINT CRUMMINE, SAINTS CYRUS AND JOHN, SAINT EGILO, SAINT HEIMRAD, POPE SAINT PAUL I, SAINT PLUTARCH, SAINT THEODICHILDIS, AND SAINT VINCENZA GEROSA. Spanning across centuries of Church history, from the immense courage of early martyrs and steadfast ancient popes to gentle monastic founders and modern, compassionate holy women dedicated to the poor, their collective lives beautifully reflect the multifaceted grace of God. Remembering them reminds us that we are supported by an incredibly vast and diverse family of faith, encouraging us to follow their example and boldly live out our unique call to holiness exactly where we are today.

PRAYER INTENTION: FOR RADICAL DISCIPLESHIP, DOCTRINAL UNITY, AND AN ETERNITY ANCHORED IN TRUTH
On this Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we bow our hearts before Your sovereign throne, O Lord, acknowledging that You are the only love worthy of our entire being. We lift up all students, freelance creators, the poor, and those suffering from cancers and terminal illnesses. We pray for our families, asking that You shield them from division, and we pray for our global clergy, that they may be granted the structural fortitude to shepherd Your flock with absolute clarity and holiness. Through the powerful intercession of Saint Irenaeus of Lyons (the Doctor of Unity), we present our specific petitions. Grant us, Lord, his apostolic zeal to defend the goodness of Your creation and his unbending courage to resist the confusing currents of false modern philosophies, keeping the Church permanently unified in the true deposit of faith. Deliver us, O Lord, from the tragedy of spiritual stagnation and conditional love exposed in today’s Gospel. Give us the strength to take up our daily crosses, to willingly lose our lives for Your sake, and to prioritize Your truth above all earthly relationships or personal comfort. Teach us the holy art of hospitality witnessed in the First Reading, that like the Shunammite woman, we may actively make room for Your presence in our busy lives and offer the simple “cup of cold water” of kindness to those around us. Having been sacramentally buried with Christ in Baptism as proclaimed in the Second Reading, empower us to live this day completely dead to sin and vibrantly alive for You, singing of Your unbreakable goodness forever. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

DEVOTION OF THE MONTH OF JUNE | MONTH OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS: June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a powerful sign of Christ’s love and mercy. His Heart, pierced and crowned with thorns, burns with compassion for all humanity. This devotion calls us to return love for love to console His Heart and make reparation for sin and indifference. Rooted in the revelations to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the Church invites us this month to deepen our trust in Jesus, especially through First Friday devotions, the Litany of the Sacred Heart, and acts of consecration. His words echo in our hearts: “Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart” (Matthew 11:29).
The Sacred Heart shows us what true love looks like patient, humble, and self-giving. In a world often cold and restless, we find peace and healing in His Heart.
“Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in You”
O Sacred Heart of Jesus, teach us to love as You love. Fill our hearts with compassion, mercy, and a deep desire to follow You. Amen 🙏🏽

PRAYER FOR THE DEAD
We pray for the repose of the gentle souls of our loved ones and souls of all the faithful departed. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their gentle souls through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace with our Lord Jesus Christ… Amen 🙏🏽
Thanking God for His love and the gift of this glorious day, we offer Him a prayer of gratitude for the graces of the past months and entrust this month of June to His loving providence. We pray for God’s grace and mercy as we anchor ourselves in the steady, life-giving rhythm of Ordinary Time. May the profound mysteries of the Resurrection, the Ascension, and the fresh fire of the Holy Spirit, which we have so beautifully celebrated, continue to help us seek You in every moment of our lives. May the peace, hope, and divine communion that flow from the Most Holy Trinity shape our steps, inform our decisions, and strengthen our resolve to live each day in the light of Christ and the daily guidance of the Advocate. As we journey onward through the rest of this month, may God bless our families and loved ones, and may His light continue to shine brightly in every home. Let us draw closer to God and be renewed through the joy of the Gospel, the gifts of the Spirit, and generosity to the poor. May God keep us all safe and well during these challenging times. Wishing us all a spiritually enriching, most blessed, and grace-filled journey ahead. Amen. 🙏🏽
