LIVE UPDATES: Pope Leo XIV’s Historic Apostolic Journey to Africa

Monday, April 13, 2026 — , Pope Leo XIV officially began an 11-day apostolic trip to Africa, a continent home to roughly 20% of the world’s Catholics and where the Church is seeing its most rapid growth.

This ambitious journey will span 11 cities, featuring eight public addresses and eight Masses. The itinerary is as follows:

• Algeria (April 13–15)
• Cameroon (April 15–18)
• Angola (April 18–21)
• Equatorial Guinea (April 21–23)

The journey began on April 13 in Algiers, marking the first-ever papal visit to Algeria. This stop held deep personal significance for the Holy Father, who is a member of the Order of St. Augustine. Following his historic visit to Algeria, the Holy Father arrived on April 15 in Cameroon, visiting Yaoundé, Bamenda, and Douala, where he called for peace and an end to corruption. On April 18, Pope Leo XIV arrived in Angola, visiting the Muxima Shrine and the diamond-mining region of Saurimo, delivering a powerful message on the dignity of labor and the just distribution of natural resources. On Tuesday, April 21, he arrived in Equatorial Guinea, visiting a psychiatric hospital in Malabo and later traveling to the mainland to visit inmates at Bata Prison and the Basilica of Mongomo.

Thursday, April 23, Pope Leo XIV brought his 11-day apostolic journey to a close. This morning, he celebrated a final, joyful Farewell Mass at the Malabo Stadium, where he thanked the people of Africa for their “vibrant faith and contagious hope.” In his final address before departing, he urged the continent to remain “the spiritual lung of humanity.” Following an official departure ceremony at Malabo International Airport, the Holy Father boarded the papal plane for his return flight to Rome. As he leaves African soil, he carries with him the prayers of millions, having completed a journey that spanned four nations and 11 cities, leaving behind a renewed call for peace, justice, and solidarity.

As the Holy Father departs African soil, we offer this prayer of thanksgiving and hope:

Heavenly Father, We thank You with all our hearts for the safe and successful completion of Pope Leo XIV’s apostolic visit to Africa. We praise You for the journey mercies granted to him across these 11 historic days. Lord, we now pray that the seeds of peace, justice, and reconciliation sown in Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea may take deep root. May the purpose of this mission be fully fulfilled, let his words bear abundant fruit in our lives, bringing lasting renewal to Africa and unity to Your people. May the light of faith ignited during these days continue to shine brightly long after the journey has ended. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

A Pope Who Knows Africa

Pope Leo XIV is the first pontiff in modern history to have firsthand knowledge of the continent’s vast diversity across Eastern, Western, Southern, Northern, and Central regions. Having visited these areas in person before his election on May 8, 2025, he arrives not as a stranger, but as a brother returning to familiar ground.

Heavenly Father, Lord of all nations and peoples, we lift up to You Your servant, Pope Leo, as he journeys to the beloved continent of Africa. Grant him safe travels, strength in body and spirit, and fill him with the wisdom and compassion of the Holy Spirit. May his words bring hope to the weary, peace to troubled hearts, and unity among Your people. Bless the nations of Africa— their leaders, their families, their youth, and their elders.

May Your grace abound in every land, bringing healing where there is pain, justice where there is injustice, and reconciliation where there is division. Lord, let this visit be a time of renewal and joy, a moment of deep encounter with Your love.

May the Church in Africa continue to grow in faith, shine brightly in witness, and bear abundant fruit for Your Kingdom. Protect all who gather, and may Your presence be felt in every word spoken, every prayer offered, and every heart touched. We pray especially for the people of Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. May this visit be a breath of the eternal that breaks the cycle of conflict and sows seeds of reconciliation.

We entrust this mission into the loving care of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, and through the intercession of St. Augustine, may the Holy Father’s message of “unarmed peace” find a home in every heart. Bless the Church in Africa, that she may continue to be a vibrant witness to hope and justice for the whole world through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽
