THE LITURGICAL YEAR IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH | https://dailyreflectionswithphilomena.com/the-liturgical-year-in-the-catholic-church/

Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord, when Jesus humbly submits to John’s baptism, the Spirit descends upon Him like a dove, and the Father declares, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” In the readings from Isaiah and Acts, we see God’s call to justice, mercy, and healing, as Jesus brings light to the nations and freedom to those in darkness. The Responsorial Psalm reminds us that God’s mighty voice blesses His people with peace. On this day, we also honor Saint Hyginus, Pope; Saint Theodosius, Abbot; and Saint Paulinus, Patriarch of Aquileia, whose courage, holiness, and charity inspire us to respond faithfully to God’s call in our own lives.

We joyfully thank God for the gift of life and for bringing us safely into the new year. As we embark on this fresh journey of faith, we give thanks for God’s boundless mercy and the hope of eternal life promised to those who believe in Him. May the witness of the Saints and the faith of our loved ones inspire us to live each day in holiness, humility, and love. This month of January, dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus, invites us to grow in grace and devotion, following His example of love, obedience, and trust in God’s plan. Through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Name of Jesus, may God fill our hearts with hope, strengthen our faith, and guide us in holiness throughout this new year. May this month bring light to our minds, peace to our hearts, and strength to our souls. Amen 🙏🏽

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” ~ Matthew 5:4

We join our Holy Father Pope Leo XIV to pray for the gentle repose of the souls of our dear beloved late Pope Francis, the Cardinals, Bishops, Priests and Religious who have gone to be with the Lord. We also remember in prayer all who began this journey of life with us but are no longer here. We pray for the gentle repose of the souls of our loved ones who recently passed away, and we continue to pray for the souls in Purgatory; lost souls. For the repose of the souls of all the faithful departed, may the Lord receive them into the light of Eternal Kingdom.

“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His Saints.” ~ Psalm 116:15

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their gentle souls through the mercy of God rest in perfect peace with our Lord Jesus Christ… Amen 🙏🏽

PRAYER FOR THE DEAD: In your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust our brothers and sisters. In this life, you embraced them with your tender love; deliver them now from every evil, and bid them eternal rest. The old order has passed away: welcome them into paradise, where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain, but fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen🙏🏽✝️🕯✝️🕯✝️🕯

Lord Almighty, we lift our hearts in gratitude for Your unfailing love, protection, and mercy that carried us through the past months. We entrust the days of January into Your hands, asking for Your blessings, guidance, and peace upon our lives and families. May this month be for us a time of renewed faith, deeper hope, and overflowing joy. We pray especially for all families, for children, parents, and teachers, that they may be strengthened and protected. Bless those who will celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, new opportunities, and milestones this month, and comfort those who enter it with heavy hearts or struggles. Lord, go before us, walk beside us, and remain with us always, now and forever. Amen. 🙏🏽

Today, we humbly pray for the poor, abandoned, and those in need, for all those who are marginalized in our society. For those who are imprisoned, especially those who are unjustly imprisoned. We pray for charitable organizations, asking God’s blessing upon their mission and we lift our prayers for peace, love, justice and unity in our families, marriages and our world. May God protect us all and keep us safe and united in peace, love and faith. Amen 🙏🏽

Through the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary on this special Feast day, we lift our prayers for the protection, safety and well-being of healthcare professionals, educators, missionaries, pilots, and all travelers. We ask for healing for the sick and dying, especially those who are suffering from cancers and other terminal diseases, strength for the weary, peace in troubled homes, and provision for all in need. Guide our steps in righteousness, protect us from harm, and fill our hearts with faith, joy, and gratitude. May this month draw us closer to Your will, and may every day be a testimony of Your goodness and mercy in our lives. We begin this month with trust in Your unfailing love, Lord, and we surrender all that lies ahead into Your hands. Amen 🙏🏾

We continue to pray for the Church, the Clergy, our Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, the Cardinals, Bishops, all Priests, that they be sanctified in their ministry to God’s people. We pray for persecuted Christians, for the conversion of sinners, and Christians all over the world suffering from political and religious unrest.

Through the intercession of St. Joseph, we pray for all fathers, mothers, workers, and all those who labor in this world. May the Lord bless the work of their hands, and may God’s grace and mercy be with us all during this season of Advent. Wishing us all and our loved ones a joyful, peaceful, and grace-filled month of January. 🙏🏽

Gospel Reading ~ Matthew 3:13–17

“Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.”

In today’s Gospel, Jesus approaches John the Baptist at the Jordan to be baptized. John hesitates, recognizing the holiness of the one before him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me?” Jesus’ humble response teaches us the meaning of obedience and solidarity with humanity. Though sinless, He enters the waters of baptism to fulfill God’s plan and to reveal the Spirit’s work in the world. As Jesus emerges, heaven opens, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father’s voice declares, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” This profound moment reveals the Trinity in action—Father, Son, and Spirit united in God’s saving purpose.

The baptism of Jesus models humility and total trust in God’s will. Even the Son of God submits to a human rite to sanctify it, showing us that obedience to God is always a path to life and righteousness. The Spirit descending like a dove is a sign of empowerment and peace, while the Father’s voice confirms Jesus’ identity and mission. For us, baptism is not only a past event but a present reality. Through it, we are anointed, chosen, and called to live as God’s beloved children, empowered to act with justice, mercy, and love in the world.

In the First Reading, Isaiah introduces the Lord’s chosen servant, anointed with the Spirit to bring justice, heal the oppressed, and be a light to the nations. This servant acts with gentleness and care, not with force or domination. In Jesus, we see the fulfillment of this prophecy: He brings freedom to the captives, sight to the blind, and hope to those living in darkness. We, too, are called to bear light in our own communities—through kindness, fairness, and service to others.

Reflecting on the Responsorial Psalm Reflection, the Psalm praises God’s majestic voice over the waters, echoing the baptism scene at the Jordan. God’s voice is mighty yet gentle, bringing peace to His people. It reminds us that God is both powerful and personal—His glory rules over creation, yet His Spirit rests on those who love Him. In baptism, we too receive the Spirit’s guidance and peace, inviting us to live confidently in God’s presence.

In the Second Reading, Peter reminds us that God shows no partiality: all who fear Him and live uprightly are accepted. Jesus’ ministry is the ultimate proof of this truth—He heals, delivers, and restores all in need. The reading emphasizes God’s universal love, challenging us to overcome prejudice, judgment, and division. Like Jesus, we are called to extend mercy and goodness to everyone, recognizing that God’s Spirit works in all who seek Him sincerely.

As we reflect on today’s Sacred Scriptures, we are invited to examine ourselves. How do I live out my baptismal call today? Do I trust the Spirit to guide my decisions and actions? In what ways am I a light to those living in darkness or struggling in life? How can I follow Jesus’ example of humility, obedience, and mercy in my daily relationships and responsibilities?

Lord Jesus, at Your baptism You revealed the glory of the Father and the power of the Holy Spirit. Help us to embrace our baptismal calling with faith, humility, and courage. Fill us with Your Spirit, that we may bring justice, healing, and light to the world. May we always recognize Your presence in our lives, follow Your example of obedience and love, and live as Your beloved children, pleasing to the Father. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

MEMORIAL OF SAINT HYGINUS, POPE; SAINT THEODOSIUS, ABBOT; SAINT PAULINUS, PATRIARCH OF AQUILEIA – FEAST DAY: JANUARY 11TH: Today, the Church commemorates the Memorial of Saint Hyginus, Pope (Patron of Church Order and Orthodoxy); Saint Theodosius, Abbot (Patron of Monastic Life and Hospices); and Saint Paulinus, Patriarch of Aquileia (Patron of Faithful Leadership and Missionary Zeal). Though their vocations and eras differed, each of these saints bore witness to Christ through faithfulness, courage, and service to the Church and humanity. Their lives remind us that holiness can be expressed through governance, teaching, and charity. As we honor their memory today, we are invited to imitate their dedication to God, their steadfastness in truth, and their love for all in need.

SAINT HYGINUS, POPE: Saint Hyginus (d. 142 A.D.), a philosopher from Athens, became the ninth Pope of Rome. During his pontificate, he opposed the heresies of Valentinus and Cerdo, preserving the true teachings of Christ amid the rise of Gnosticism. He also organized the hierarchy of the clergy, establishing order among priests and deacons, and guided the Church in matters of sin and obedience. Pope Hyginus faithfully defended the faith and suffered gloriously for it.

PRAYER: O God, who strengthened Pope Hyginus to guard the truth of Your Church, grant that we may be steadfast in faith, obedient to Your will, and courageous in defending Your truth. Through his intercession, may we remain faithful to Your teaching. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT THEODOSIUS, ABBOT: Saint Theodosius (423–529) was born in Cappadocia and, inspired by the example of the patriarch Abraham, journeyed to Jerusalem to live a life of prayer and service. He became a revered abbot, founding a monastery at Cathismus, establishing hospices for the sick and aged, and caring for the mentally ill. He opposed heresies such as Eutychianism and Monophysitism, preaching orthodoxy despite political pressure. He endured hardships with humility and died at the age of 106, leaving a legacy of holiness and charity.

PRAYER: God of strength, grant us the courage of Saint Theodosius to live faithfully, serve the needy selflessly, and stand firm in truth and holiness. May his example inspire us to love and care for others in Your name. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT PAULINUS, PATRIARCH OF AQUILEIA: Saint Paulinus (c. 726–802), born in northern Italy, was a scholar and grammarian who became Patriarch of Aquileia. He defended the faith against heresies, participated in Church councils, and sent missionaries to convert pagans. He promoted education, piety, and peaceful evangelization, condemning forced conversions. His life combined intellect, pastoral zeal, and fidelity to God’s mission, leaving a lasting impact on the Church and surrounding communities.

PRAYER: Lord, You raised Saint Paulinus to guide Your people with wisdom and zeal. Through his intercession, help us to persevere in faith, teach with love, and serve the Church faithfully. Amen. 🙏🏾

Our Blessed Mother Mary, Saint Hyginus, Saint Theodosius, and Saint Paulinus — pray for us. 🙏🏾

THE POPE’S MONTHLY INTENTIONS FOR 2026: FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY: For prayer with the Word of God. Let us pray that praying with the Word of God be nourishment for our lives and a source of hope in our communities, helping us to build a more fraternal and missionary Church.

MONTH OF THE HOLY NAME OF JESUS: The month of January is traditionally dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus. After the Blessed Virgin Mary conceived by the Holy Spirit, the Angel Gabriel appeared to St. Joseph told him that the Child’s name should be called Jesus, meaning “God Saves.” According to Jewish law, on the 8th day after his birth, a male child was to be circumcised, receive his name, and become a full member of God’s covenant people. According to the old Roman liturgical calendar, the Feast of the Circumcision of Jesus was celebrated on January 1st, eight days after Christmas, the same day that He was given His sacred name. Currently, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Mother of God on January 1st and honor the Holy Name of Jesus on January 3rd. For Catholics, Jesus’ sacred name is the object of a special devotion symbolized by the monogram “IHS,” (sometimes called a Christogram), which is the first three letters of the Greek spelling of His name.

PRAYER INTENTIONS: Today, we bring before the Lord our prayers for the Church, for the world, and for our personal needs. We pray for Church leaders, that like Saint Hyginus, they may defend the truth of the Gospel and guide the faithful with wisdom and courage. We pray for those in monastic life and all who care for the sick and marginalized, that they may follow the example of Saint Theodosius and Saint Paulinus in serving others with humility and love. We ask for the grace to recognize Christ as the beloved Son of God in our daily lives, as revealed at His Baptism, and to respond to His call to justice, mercy, and peace. Let us pray for those in need of healing, those oppressed by injustice, and for our own hearts, that we may remain faithful, open to God’s Spirit, and steadfast in love.

LET US PRAY:

Lord Jesus, at Your baptism You revealed Yourself as the beloved Son of the Father, filled with the Holy Spirit and sent to bring justice, freedom, and light to the world. Inspire us through the example of Saint Hyginus, Saint Theodosius, and Saint Paulinus to live with courage, faith, and charity. Strengthen our hearts to follow Your will, serve those in need, and proclaim Your truth with love. May Your Spirit guide us each day to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with You, our God, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen. 🙏🏾

Save Us, Savior of the World. Our Blessed Mother Mary, Saint Hyginus, Saint Theodosius, and Saint Paulinus ~ Pray for us 🙏🏾

Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you. Immaculate Heart of Mary, Pray for us. Amen 🙏🏽

Thanking God for the precious gift of this new day and for His faithful presence throughout the year now unfolding, we begin this Ordinary Time with hearts open to His continual guidance and grace. As each day dawns, we pause to reflect with gratitude on all that has been and all that is to come, entrusting our joys and sorrows, successes and shortcomings, into God’s merciful hands. We lift our hearts in thanksgiving for the greatest gift ever given: God Himself, present with us each day, bringing light, hope, and salvation into our lives and into the world.

As we step forward into this new year, may this sacred season invite us to begin again with renewed faith, deeper trust, and a greater openness to God’s grace. May the peace, hope, and steady guidance that flow from walking daily with Christ shape our steps, inform our decisions, and strengthen our resolve to live each day in love and holiness. As we journey through Ordinary Time, may God bless all families and loved ones as we embrace the year ahead, and may His light continue to shine brightly in every home. May this season of faithful discipleship be grace-filled and purposeful, drawing us ever deeper into a lived relationship with the Lord and the quiet assurance of His abiding presence with us throughout the year to come. 🙏🏽
