Greetings and blessings, beloved family!

Today, on the Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Gospel brings us to Caesarea Philippi, where Christ asks each of us the defining question of discipleship: “Who do you say that I am?” Upon Simon Peter’s inspired confession of faith, Jesus establishes His Church upon an unshakable rock, promising that the gates of the netherworld will never prevail against it. As we enter day six of our Novena to Saint Monica, we continue to join our prayers with her faithful, persistent tears for the conversion, spiritual renewal, and return to the sacraments of our children and loved ones. Today, the Church also celebrates Saint Rose of Lima, the first canonized saint of the Americas, who dedicated her life to intense prayer, penance, and heroic service to the sick and impoverished, alongside Saint Philip Benizi, a brilliant physician who gave up worldly honor to serve as a humble Servite priest and peacemaker. Inspired by their lives of radical surrender and humble service, let us anchor our hearts firmly on the rock of Christ’s love and truth.

“You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.”

“Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’ They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter said in reply, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus said to him in reply, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.’ Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.”

SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS

In today’s Gospel, Jesus poses the defining question of discipleship at Caesarea Philippi: “Who do you say that I am?” Moving past popular public opinion, Simon Peter speaks with divinely inspired clarity: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” In response, Jesus renames him Peter (Petros, the rock) and confers upon him the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, establishing the enduring foundation of His Church against which the powers of hell will never prevail. This authority is not rooted in Peter’s human strength, but in divine revelation. Christ reminds each of us that Christian discipleship requires a personal, convicted profession of faith. Jesus is not merely a wise moral teacher or a historical figure; He is our Lord, Savior, and King, calling us to anchor our lives firmly on the rock of His truth and the communion of His Church.

In the First Reading, the prophet Isaiah records the transfer of authority in the Davidic kingdom from the unfaithful prime minister Shebna to Eliakim, upon whose shoulder God places “the key of the House of David.” This Old Testament stewardship prefigures the supreme pastoral office and keys entrusted by Christ to Peter. The Responsorial Psalm echoes this profound trust in God’s providential guidance through Psalm 138: “Lord, your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of your hands.” In the Second Reading, Saint Paul marvels at the fathomless wisdom and unsearchable judgments of God, reminding us that all things originate from Him, exist through Him, and find their fulfillment in His divine plan.

Together, these readings highlight God’s unfailing protection, divine authority, and the gift of faith. Human leaders and earthly institutions may rise and fall, but Christ’s Church—built upon the rock of apostolic faith and guided by the Holy Spirit—stands undefeated. We are called to surrender our lives to God’s inscrutable wisdom, trusting that His grace will sustain us through every storm and trial of life.

Who is Jesus to you personally? Is your life and faith built securely on the rock of Christ and His teachings, or on the shifting sands of worldly opinion? May we boldly confess Christ as our Lord today and allow His truth to guide our every step.

Heavenly Father, You revealed to Saint Peter the true identity of Your Son, Jesus Christ, and established Your Church upon an unshakable foundation. We thank You for the gift of faith and for Your eternal love that sustains the work of Your hands. Forgive us for the times our faith has wavered, or when we have conformed our beliefs to worldly opinions rather than the truth of the Gospel. Deepen our personal relationship with Jesus, grant us the courage to proclaim Him as our Lord and Savior, and preserve us in unity with Your Church. May Your inscrutable wisdom guide our lives, that in all things You may be glorified forever. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽

SAINT ROSE OF LIMA, VIRGIN: Born Isabel Flores de Oliva in Lima, Peru, in 1586, Saint Rose was called “Rose” by her family for her beauty. But she sought a deeper beauty the beauty of holiness. From childhood, she consecrated her life to God with intense prayer, penance, and works of charity. To resist vanity, she disfigured her face and embraced a hidden life of sacrifice, following the example of Saint Catherine of Siena. Though her family wished her to marry, Rose chose virginity and joined the Third Order Dominicans. She built a small hermitage in her parents’ garden, where she lived a life of austerity, fasting, and prayer. At the same time, she cared tenderly for the sick, the poor, and slaves, earning her the title “originator of social service in Peru.” Her mystical visions and great patience in suffering made her a beacon of faith in a society torn by inequality and corruption. Saint Rose died at just 31, in 1617, after prophesying the day of her passing. So beloved was she that her funeral drew immense crowds. Canonized in 1671, she became the first canonized saint of the New World. She is patroness of Peru, the Americas, and the Philippines.

Quote of Saint Rose of Lima: “The gifts of grace increase as the struggles increase.”

PRAYER: O God, You filled Saint Rose with fervent love for You and enabled her to embrace penance and service with heroic charity. Through her intercession, may we grow in humility and love, and come to share the joy of heaven. Amen. 🙏🏾

SAINT PHILIP BENIZI, SERVITE PRIEST: Saint Philip Benizi was born in Florence in 1233, on the same day the Servite Order was founded. From his earliest years, he showed signs of extraordinary holiness. Though trained as a physician, he felt called to something greater. In humility, he entered the Servite Order as a lay brother, performing the humblest tasks. Later, obedience led to his priestly ordination, and eventually he became Master of Novices and General of the Order. Philip revitalized the Servites with his leadership, missionary zeal, and compassion for the poor. He mediated peace in civil conflicts, preached with power, and embodied humility despite his gifts. Once, when cardinals considered electing him pope, he fled into hiding, desiring only to remain a humble servant of Mary. He was renowned for miracles of healing, including the cure of a leper to whom he had given his own clothing. He died in Todi in 1285, asking only for his “book” the crucifix that had been his constant teacher. Canonized in 1671, Saint Philip is honored as a reformer, peacemaker, and man of deep humility.

PRAYER: Lord, You raised up Saint Philip Benizi to renew Your Church through humility, mercy, and service. Through his intercession, may we learn to love simplicity, care for the poor, and remain faithful to the cross of Christ. Amen. 🙏🏾

Through the persistent prayers and maternal tears of Saint Monica, we ask for the conversion, repentance, and complete spiritual restoration of our children, spouses, and family members who have strayed from the faith. Through the intercession of Saint Peter, Saint Rose of Lima, and Saint Philip Benizi, we pray for our Holy Father, Bishops, Priests, Deacons, and Religious; grant them steadfast faith, deep humility, and apostolic zeal, and bless the Church with holy vocations. We pray for the poor, the marginalized, and all who are struggling with financial burdens, that they may experience Your divine providence. Lord, reach out Your healing hand to the sick and dying, especially those suffering from cancer and chronic illnesses, and bring comfort to those who mourn. Protect all marriages and families, heal broken relationships, and unite our homes in Your peace and everlasting love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. 🙏🏽
