4th Sunday of Easter (also known as Good Shepherd Sunday)

The World Day of Prayer for Vocations is a special observance in the Catholic Church dedicated to praying for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life. Instituted by Pope St. Paul VI in 1964, it falls annually on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, when the Gospel focuses on Jesus the Good Shepherd—the One who calls and lays down His life for His sheep.

Purpose and Significance:

This day invites the whole Church to:

  • Pray for young men and women to respond generously to God’s call.

  • Support those who are discerning their vocations.

  • Encourage families, parishes, and schools to foster a culture of vocation.

  • Reflect on the personal call each of us has received through baptism—whether to marriage, priesthood, religious life, or single life.

Key Themes:

  • Jesus as the Good Shepherd: He knows His sheep, calls them by name, and leads them with love.

  • Discerning God’s Call: Every person has a unique and beautiful purpose in God’s plan.

  • A Call to Service: Vocations are not about status, but about loving God and serving others with joy and sacrifice.

How It Is Celebrated:

  • Special Prayers at Mass for vocations, especially for priests and religious.

  • Eucharistic Adoration or vocation-themed Holy Hours.

  • Sharing of vocation stories or testimonies from priests, nuns, and seminarians.

  • Encouragement of youth and young adults to listen for God’s voice in their lives.

A Prayerful Challenge:

Today, we are called to ask:

  • How can I support vocations in my parish or family?

  • Am I open to the possibility that God is calling me or someone I love to serve in a special way?

Let us join the universal Church in praying with faith and trust:
“Lord of the harvest, send laborers into Your vineyard.”

Would you like a short prayer or quote to accompany this reflection?
