Solemnity – Holy Day of Obligation
Celebrated 40 days after Easter (traditionally Thursday, but often transferred to the following Sunday in many dioceses)
The Ascension of the Lord marks the glorious return of Jesus Christ to the right hand of the Father in Heaven, completing His earthly mission and opening the way for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. This solemnity is both a conclusion and a beginning: the fulfillment of Christ’s time on earth, and the inauguration of the Church’s mission to proclaim the Gospel to all nations.
Scripture Themes:
-
Acts 1:1–11: Jesus, after instructing His disciples, is taken up before their eyes. Two angels announce He will return in the same way.
-
Psalm 47: “God mounts His throne to shouts of joy; a blare of trumpets for the Lord.”
-
Ephesians 1:17–23 / 4:1–13: Paul speaks of the exalted Christ who fills all things and pours gifts on the Church.
-
Mark 16:15–20 / Luke 24:46–53: Jesus commissions His disciples to preach the Gospel to all creation and promises His continued presence.
Key Themes:
-
Christ’s Exaltation: Jesus returns to the Father, not to leave us behind, but to reign in glory and prepare a place for us.
-
The Church’s Mission: The Lord entrusts His disciples with the mission to evangelize—to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth.
-
Hope and Promise: The Ascension reminds us of our eternal destiny and gives us confidence that Christ, though invisible, remains with us through the Spirit and the Church.
Reflection:
The Ascension is not Christ’s absence, but the assurance of His greater presence in all the world. In returning to the Father, Jesus does not abandon His people but draws all humanity into divine life. The disciples, once fearful, now return to Jerusalem with great joy, preparing for the coming of the Holy Spirit. This Solemnity calls us to lift up our hearts in hope, to remember that our true home is in heaven, and to take seriously our calling as Christ’s witnesses in the world.
Spiritual Takeaway:
-
Do I live with joyful hope, knowing Christ reigns in glory?
-
Am I witnessing to the Gospel in my daily life and relationships?
-
How am I preparing my heart to receive the Holy Spirit more fully at Pentecost?
Prayer:
Risen Lord Jesus, You ascended in glory to the Father, and yet You remain with us always. Help us to live as Your faithful witnesses, proclaiming Your truth with love and courage. May we long for the things of heaven, where You intercede for us, and may we be found ready when You return in glory. Amen.
