Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest – Feast

June 12, 2025
00:00 - 23:59

The feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Eternal High Priest invites the faithful to reflect on the unique priesthood of Christ—He who offers Himself as both priest and victim for the salvation of the world. This celebration draws our attention to the depth of Christ’s sacrifice and His ongoing intercession for humanity before the Father.

Scriptural Foundations:

Hebrews 4:14–16; 5:7–9

“We have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God.”

John 17:1–2, 9, 14–26 (or alternate Gospel)

“Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth… I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word.”

Theological Meaning:

Jesus is the eternal High Priest because:

  • He offers a perfect and once-for-all sacrifice—Himself on the Cross.

  • He continues to intercede for us before the Father in heaven.

  • He mediates a new covenant of mercy, grace, and salvation.

In Christ, the old temple sacrifices are fulfilled and surpassed. His priesthood is not based on lineage or ritual, but on divine appointment and eternal love.

Reflection:

This feast invites us to enter into the mystery of Christ’s priestly mission. As the mediator between God and humanity, Jesus doesn’t simply offer sacrifices—He is the sacrifice. His offering was made out of love, and it remains effective forever.

We also reflect on the priesthood of the Church—both ministerial and common. All baptized Christians share in Christ’s priestly office by offering prayers, sacrifices, and acts of charity. Ordained priests, through Holy Orders, act in the person of Christ the Head, continuing His sacramental ministry.

Let us pray for all priests today—that they may mirror the heart of the Eternal High Priest, especially in their fidelity, humility, and sacrificial love.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest,
You offered Yourself to the Father on the altar of the Cross and continue to intercede for us at the right hand of God.
Grant that we may always draw near with confidence to Your throne of grace, and that priests may be faithful, holy, and zealous in Your service.
Strengthen all the baptized to live out our priestly calling with love and dedication.
You live and reign forever and ever. Amen.
